AFriendlyFace Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 It's another sleepless night. I got a new laptop but the HD has several damaged sectors. So while the XP Pro setup disk formatted the drive and copied the files to the HD, Windows would not start the installation cause it couldn't read NTFS.sys. So here I sit watching Spinrite repairing the HD so I can then start the whole process over again. That sucks! Good luck, Gary Good luck with that dear heart. I'm going to be on for quite a while personally. I have a new song downloading and I'm in pain. Lots of pain. Oh my gosh! That's awful, so sorry, Rose
GaryK Posted March 7, 2008 Author Posted March 7, 2008 Serious pain? Or just impatient pain brought on by a long download?
corvus Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Enforced sleeplessness. Go problem sets....... x____X There is something really nice about walking the city streets when nobody's there, though. Or going through an empty campus at night. Almost beautiful.
Tristan Thinks Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 I've got the opposite problem this morning! Up at 7.30am despite not going to bed until 2am, and wishing I was back in bed right now. Can't though, getting things sorted out so I can fly back to Spain in a few hours. I'll probably manage a nap on the airplane though.

I guess it depends where you live or go to school. Here in Miami I'd be terrified to take a walk at night. And on campus at University of Miami it's suggested you call for a security escort before going anywhere on campus after a certain hour. There have been far too many muggings and rapes to ignore such suggestions. I hope you appreciate how fortunate you are to be able to enjoy such things. ADDED: I hope you have a safe journey Tristan. Tristan Thinks Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 I hope you have a safe journey Tristan. I'm sure I will; I usually do, unless it's me flying the plane. I have a tendancy to see something interesting and just fly towards it without getting clearance from ATC In case we should hit a mountain do you think I should take my snowboard along? It'd sure make getting home quicker than having to trek down

I agree with Gary. I certainly took my fair share of midnight (or later/earlier) strolls when I was 19, but I do urge caution. It's a dangerous world out there, and you're too nifty to go and get yourself hurt In case we should hit a mountain do you think I should take my snowboard along? It'd sure make getting home quicker than having to trek down Well then you'd might as well. Always best to be prepared for any contingency.
S.L. Lewis Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Oh my gosh! That's awful, so sorry, Rose Thanks dear. It's alright though. A loooonnnngggg hot bath with some soft incense and I'll be good. Serious pain? Or just impatient pain brought on by a long download? Pain. Just under my left shoulder blade, on my left hip and of course my elbow which is now a wonderful shade of very light yellow. Lovely.

Lovely. Oh I feel awful for you Rose. I hope the long hot bath helps. I hate to see anyone in pain. A friend in pain makes me feel the pain too. Tris, you and your snowboards. Just remember you must skim the mountain with the plane, not hit it. Sheesh, you and I need to have a serious discussion about how to act crazy. ADDED: Spinrite did its usual superb job. Best US$89 I've ever spent on software. My HD is now fully functional with all the bad sectors having been repaired. This software has saved my butt many a time. Edited March 7, 2008 by GaryInMiami

It's not working with me!!

It's not working with me!! Glad you're feeling better. I'll feel better once I get to bed and to sleep. I've got Willie Nelson playing on the iPod right now. I think maybe he had something to do with making the HD work, LOL. Well, I just got Windows installed and some basic configuration done. Haven't setup the WiFi connection and other stuff yet. I still have a few hours of work before it's ready to rock 'n roll. But knowing the HD is better than new is a great feeling. How does one setup a site on MSN? I've never done that. I'm a certified geek and I've got several dedicated servers with my websites and client's websites on them. What are you setting up a website for? Maybe I can offer you space on one of my servers. I made the same offer to Tim. It's one of those things I only do for friends.

I need to head to the library and do a few things, other wise, I'm going to have a friend update it for me, since it's not quite working. And I'm setting up another site for my stories, getting them out there on places that I can control or that I know I can trust. I only have the two sites where my stories are posted, besides e-fiction. And that would be wonderful dear. I know I can trust you not to screw me over. Maybe we can chat about it when you get back. Rose (who is one happy female)

Rose (who is one happy female) I think I understand what you mean about the MSN site. It's sort of like a personal website that I'm sure Microsoft provides tools for to make it easier to update. When you have time IM me. I should be here all day. Although I will probably take a nap at some point cause I didn't fall asleep until a little after seven this morning and was up by ten, because my air conditioner died and the place was hot. I've spent most of the day pissing Tim off cause we were trying to talk about some serious stuff and I kept getting interrupted by phones calls and visits related to the a/c being replaced. I know he's not really pissed off. But I know it was frustrating and that he understands. I'm gonna talk to him later when we can Skype uninterrupted. The contractor was able to make the current unit work just good enough that the temperature is reasonable enough for me not to move to my father's condo for the weekend. Anyway, when we chat we can discuss a website of your own. I hope you're feeling better than you did last night and that at least one of us -- that would be you -- got a good night of sleep.

And based on our IM I suspect those sinus pills will have you out again for the night very soon. Sleep well sweetheart.
AFriendlyFace Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Well I intend to have a "weird night" tonight. I don't intend to go to bed at all. For more than a week now I've been wanting to spend about 10 or 12 hours quietly alone without any interruptions or responsibilities, and I'm going to make good on that desire tonight...ought to be easier whilst everyone else is asleep

It can be fun. I can't do that much, because the sunshine makes it difficult. I can only go to sleep in darkness.

Or is it something else?
S.L. Lewis Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 See? This is what happens when you try to practice snowboarding on the lounge coffee table I just re-read this, and I'll have you know I wasn't practicing my snowboarding skills. I was practicing my 'Slip on your papers that have all your papers so you have to put them back in order' skills. I'm still trying to get my writings in order again.... *le sigh* Oh, and I did sleep well. I have a feeling that won't happen again tonight. I wanna write and I have no where to go.
Tiger Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Does the sun simply stimulate your mind too much to let you sleep? Does it just seem odd to be sleeping during a time when you would normally be awake? Or is it something else? Actually, I cannot sleep because of the stimulation of the sun.

old bob Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 Weird night..., Anyone ever stay up so late they couldn't sleep? Never ! My chance : when I'm tired (or when I ate to much) I'm able to fall asleep within 5 minutes. I learned it trough "autogenic training". If you want to know more about it : Autogenic training. But I had a lot of experiences of working days and nights (as far as 3 days without sleep) when we had to finish a project or to present a report without delay, or when, as a officer, I had to stay at a command post 18 hours without stop (the last time I remember, it was during the Falkland's war (1982).
