Comicality Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 While writing a story can provide a real outlet for an author's emotions, and it's an art that is meant to be respected, believe me...it takes a LOT of hard work getting those emotions out where people can see and understand them...what happens when you're done with it? When the story is finished and edited and looking pretty for everybody reading...have any of you ever though about possibly leting someone else come by and make a film version of your work? It doesn't have to be a big action packed Summer blockbuster or an Oscar winning drama. Maybe an independent arthouse film, or just a good cable or DVD flick. Something to see your work actually come to life right in front of your eyes. Is it possible? Would you WANT your work to be interpreted and made into a movie? Or do you feel that a lot of what you intended your story to be would be lost in a film version? There are a lot of inner emotions and feelings that can be explored in the text that can't be shown on screen. Plus it'll have to be cut down for time. What do you think? Would your work look good on film, in you opinion? Or would it be better off in print? Or maybe even on stage as a play? What are your thoughts?
Nephylim Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 I think that some of my work would be transposable onto film. I have never really thought about it... except that Many Ways to Die was written with my daughter's girlfriend in mind. She was doing a media course and gave me the idea of writing something that is kind of based around a video anyway. It would very easily take to the film format. Most of my stories I think have reasonably simple settings and happen over relatively short periods so I suppose they could work on film. As for what happens to them when they are written... I read them now and again and they're out there and I have never made any secret of the fact that I would love for someone to come along and keep writing, taking my characters and making them their own, in a new story or a continuation of mine. If fact it would be the highest form of compliment I could think of. I'm not precious with them. Hmm... I am not sure that any of the would lend themselves to a stage play... althogh again if anyone's interested in writing a script around one of my stories... go ahead. That is not my forte at all so it will never come from me.
Guest zomgZACH Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 If you feel like you want to see everything lived out, yeah it's cool to have it as a movie But when it's really personal, seeing it acted out makes you really vulnerable and sometimes it can hurt to see other people acting out something that means *so much* to you. But really, for me, if I write something, it's because I can see it in my head and I can write about it There's no real need for any other movie or outlet for the story if I can already see it And you'd just find faults in everything the actors did because they can't seem to follow your 'vision' or whatever Plus, there will always be someone who doesn't agree with some choices for things Because in their head, they already have a set picture of how people and things look within the story I guess I think that stories should usually be kept away from the movies if you have a close tie to them
Site Administrator Graeme Posted February 27, 2010 Site Administrator Posted February 27, 2010 I've got no problems with any of my stuff being made into a movie, and I'd love to have some of it published, but I'm expecting neither and don't intend to go out of my way to make either happen. I certainly don't expect to ever make money from my writing. To be honest, one of the biggest thrills I got was an email from a teacher asking if they could use one of my stories in their class, (presumably to prompt discussion). Naturally, I said yes
