Song lyrics as poetry?

Recommended Posts

Songs are or or are not poetry, that's my question. I wonder whether poets, lycricts and readers would have different answers.

There was a discussion not long ago where it was mentioned that poetry maybe a dying art. I'm not sure what the actual history of poetry is, as I'm how much importance it had in the past and whether there is a difference today, the same with music. Obviously music has been around a long long time, bit we now have a huge music industry that's different to how it was. I wonder whether song lyrics are my generations and pasts version of poetry, just differently presented. If so, I really don't think poetry is dying at all, I think it's got a popularity bigger than ever.

What do you think? And what's your favourite lyrics? I'm going to think some more before I share mine.

Jim Morrison?

Summer's Almost Gone

Summer's almost gone

Summer's almost gone

Almost gone

Yeah, it's almost gone

Where will we be

When the summer's gone?

Morning found us calmly unaware

Noon burn gold into our hair

At night, we swim the laughin' sea

When summer's gone

Where will we be

Where will we be

Where will we be

Morning found us calmly unaware

Noon burn gold into our hair

At night, we swim the laughin' sea

When summer's gone

Where will we be

Summer's almost gone

Summer's almost gone

We had some good times

But they're gone

The winter's comin' on

Summer's almost gone
