Former Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Team LGBT consists of the 44 Openly LGBT athletes competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics (as well as the Openly LGBT athletes from previous and future Olympic Games). Would our anthem be Over the Rainbow? I Am What I Am? I'm Coming Out? I Kissed a Girl (either the earlier Jill Sobule song or the more recent Katy Perry one)? Y.M.C.A.? Glad to Be Gay? Yes I Am? I Will Survive? Relax? Heroes? Beautiful? Born This Way? We Are the Champions? Something else? What's your choice?
J.HunterDunn Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 My choice would be: We Are The Champions ... no need to be modest . 5
Former Member Posted August 8, 2016 Author Posted August 8, 2016 We Are the Champions has the advantage of being written and sung by Freddie Mercury, a Gay man. Some of the other songs have a longer history or stronger connection with the LGBT community (I'm sure some of the younger GA readers were unaware of Jill Sobule's I Kissed a Girl, for example). And stadiums and arenas full of straight sports fans have celebrated with our anthem. Do any of these songs have the gravitas usually associated with national anthems? (The US national anthem, Star Spangled Banner, uses a notoriously difficult to sing tune adapted from an English drinking song – it was only became the official national anthem by congressional resolution in 1931.)
Former Member Posted August 21, 2016 Author Posted August 21, 2016 I suppose Peter Allen's I Go to Rio is a little too specific…
W_L Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 I'd vote we create a new song for our glorious new LGBT nation if it ever comes to that, which would highlight our unity, determination, and the love that exist among our people that binds us together. 1

Former Member Posted August 23, 2016 Author Posted August 23, 2016 Maybe it's just me, but I think it's only polite, when posting a video, to describe what the video is. I can't be the only one who blocks the automatic loading of videos in my browser. In a case like jamessavik's video, just list who the artist is and what the tune is. Similarly, with links, for the link to either be obviously described by the context or explicitly by the poster. I try to adhere to this courtesy, but let me know if I've ever not done so.
TetRefine Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 Proud (Club Remix) by Heather Small. I mean, this song IS basically the gay anthem in my book. 1
PrivateTim Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 Club version of I Am What I Am by Gloria Gaynor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHcDnqIz0jg
Wesley8890 Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I'd have to say I will survive or born this way. They're both iconic to different eras.
