Today is Worlds AIDS Day. World AIDS Day takes place on the 1st December each year. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day.

There were still an estimated 30.8-42.9 million people living with HIV or AIDS at the end of 2016. 69% of HIV-positive people are in Sub-Saharan Africa, meaning that most of the people with HIV/AIDS live in a part of the world that is, very poor and has little access to the necessary treatment that HIV positive people in Europe, North America, and elsewhere take for granted.

Today is the birthday of Ryan White. I just read his story and I'm appalled by the idiocy he had to endure. He died before I was born. You can read about him here.

Thank you, Wesley, for posting this. Ryan White was a brave young man. His struggle with AIDS came at a time when most of America saw the disease as a scourge on the gay community. He became the spokesman for a disease that many showed little concern for, and his battle had a profound impact on changing attitudes concerning the AIDS epidemic.

No offense @Wesley8890, but this example shows why we need to keep telling the stories of our community and the communities that intersect and interact with ours. We cannot count on mainstream sources to tell our stories for us. California law requires public schools to teach LGBT history, but there’s already pushback and obstinacy from some of the more rural areas.
