    I think that Jamie remembers that Vane is so well connected that he couldn't be disciplined for ineffectual leadership after the Belle Therese fight. His patron in the Admiralty would see the official ship's log from the incident at the ruins of the sugar mill and perhaps look for a scapegoat. Jamie was vulnerable to a rumor campaign as much as any actual charge of wrong doing.

    "Scared of what? Jude?" he sneered. "He's not a monster. He's just... a bully. But you... you're worse. You're part of it." Interesting perspective. The narrator certainly didn't enjoy his part in the experience, so I look forward to seeing how this plays out.

    A story with a lot of disappointment for the narrator as he learns some bitter lessons about the people around him, but none for the readers who can savor this well-written piece. Highly recommended.
