Well, fuck me. The AI’s gone and written a book(ish). I started reading this expecting it to be shite, but somehow ended up genuinely invested in two old cowboys looking back on their life together. Did anyone else actually care about them by the end, or have I just read AI’s happy-ending version of Brokeback Mountain and gone soft?

Yup, you can only have so many scenes of one finger, two fingers, three fingers… ohhh. I’m just finishing a chapter in my own book that contains the first sex scene, and I tried it three different ways: Keep it as it was. Turn it into a full-on sex scene. Add a little more detail. Honestly, the extra detail ruined it for me, so I’m sticking with option one. The comments will tell me.

The name recycling is the obvious mistake, but I think the bigger problem is that everything feels over-described and under-lived (typical AI). It keeps reaching for dramatic phrases instead of letting the scene breathe. It’s not that any one line is unforgivable, although “sky the color of a bruised plum” is trying very, very hard. It’s that the whole thing has that AI habit of stacking mood on mood until nothing feels natural anymore.

Exactly. Even the cougar was dealt with before it had time to become interesting. AI seems determined to give them the safest Wild West imaginable.

I'm enjoying the experiment more than the story TBH. Every chapter has me looking for the clues that remind me it wasn't written by a person. It's fascinating.

I’ve always found that you can tell when something is written by AI because it has this mix of an 80s sitcom and a Hallmark midday romcom. Seems to be the default setting, which I suppose makes sense because a huge number of people read and watch exactly that sort of thing and probably enjoy it. I don’t personally.

I personally find sex scenes very hard (irony) to write, so I don’t. And to be honest, I prefer reading books where you know there was sex, but I don’t need three chapters of it. Nora Phoenix is a great writer, but the sex goes on and on and on and on.
