A nice start. But I should note that visually impaired people tend to know every inch of their usual haunts like home and his best friends home. But it's a wonderful beginning. And a bit of trivia for you. There is a difference between canes in the U.S. and the UK. In the U.S. Canes are red and white for the visually impaired. In the UK, canes are solid white except if the person is ALSO deaf or hearing impaired as well as blind, then the cane is white and red.

It is entirely possible that Granger has left instructions that Sommers should be the new Govenor until he is fit and able again or until news from the king changes that order. As for Dr Jackson, he has a Royal Pardon. SO its not likely that Maidstone can do anything to him without really pissing off the King and that would not be a good thing to do. So I'm betting on Granger to have left exactly those orders. All the signs point to it. And since Sommers is military, and his rank is that of an officer, he will be able to control the forces on land there. They will recognize him as Governor and follow HIS orders. I don't imagine Maidstone has ingratiated himself to anyone there who is subordinate to him and his perceived station. My big question is what has become of Bertie and Chartley? Did Maidstone send them packing? Did he kill them both? Is this part of a plan with the Wilcox clan to inflict retribution on the whole Granger family for disgracing his nephew compounded by the failed duel? Is this where we find out that the Wilcox / Mann clan has a serious amount of control over John Company and colluded with Maidstone with promises of great wealth if he satisfied their revenge? Imagine Maidstones madness when he hears of the Royal Pardon. The added benefit of getting his hands on Jackson had to be iceing on the cake after the previous plot unfolded. A great chapter Mark. Dark, but great.

UGH! I was ready for a happy chapter with some action. And here you have things at their worst! And I didn't even THINK about Maidstone and Jackson! Oh this went from bad to things really SUCK! Hopefully someone on shore has some more refined Quinine that will speed the recovery along. There was no cure for malaria but this should stem the symptoms enough to get through this. But this also means that he will suffer from this for years to come making him unfit for duty. Chartley may be able to offer him some advice. Or perhaps his grandfather will have some help? Thanks for the much anticipated chapter. I wonder if Calvert will arrive soon? Granger will need his boy. Now to see just what state things are in and what is the status of Bertie and Chartley and of course, Maidstone!

Welcome Eilias Donovan Scott! Sounds like it will give a whole new meaning to the have's and the have knots! Be welcome. A great bunch of people here. Make sure you read the FAQ's for the site regarding the rules of the stories. Believe it or knot **snicker** this is one site where the FAQ's actually answers something somebody would actually ask! I'll look forward to reading it. And we need more mature guys around here so I can feel younger. lol

Please don't stop posting here. You're not out of your league at all. Its just dialog or discussion. Just be open to other ideas, its one of the great things about the web. We get a different view of the world. And you're right, history is most often written by the victors. But revisionism is not out of the possibilities. It's occurring in America as we speak. But please, don't stop posting here just because there is a disagreement or an opposing view. I've learned that there are no absolute truth in ANY one history reporting. And your sharing has given me a different perspective to explore. Don't think that the reason's I cited mean the article lacks credibility. I meant only that when I read historical accounts that before I consider it an absolutely accurate portrayal of events that I prefer to see it from as many perceptions distilled together as possible. The victor, the victim and perhaps an entity uninvolved and objective. I'll feel awful if you allow this to chase you away.

Although I am not an authority I have found throughout the years that different countries perceive and write history differently. Germany for instance teaches that we were aiming for Duseldorf when we missed or diverted the atom bomb for Hiroshima. The UK, used to teach that America was cut loose because they were too much trouble. And the Boston Tea Party never happened. The citation on the source you used states that it was written by one educator and she sites no sources for her conclusions. That is NOT to say that it is in anyway inaccurate. It's just that I prefer collaborative history writings. Internationally when possible and with citations of the sources of it's collaborative conclusions. Just my thoughts.

Did you know there is a Hornblower restaurant right across the street from the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero here is San Fun DIsco! Probably won't get to it until Tuesday, but it's a mission.

Both good points! Sommers OR Chartley would be good choices. And Bertie may reprieve himself sufficiently to warrant his remaining. Just because Lammert suggested it doesn't mean it will happen. George will weigh it all out. This was a great chapter Mark! Lots of meat to sink our teeth into. Let's just hope that Maidstone doesn't get his hands on the doctor. As for the Vulture, if everyone else knows Granger came that way I am sure Maidstone does too. Perhaps he set the whole thing up? There wasn't supposed to be a ship of the line over there. Makes one wonder if Maidstone is leaking the info to try and get Granger out of the way and getting the doctor at the same time. He seems to be a master of deception and distraction. There are a lot of people with motives to set Granger up to die. His little Royal Bastards daddy for one, (Unlikely though for a number of reason.) davina for two. If he was dead there would be no one to question the parentage of her child. If she really IS pregnant. And he had her dear "Alfred" killed when her footmen were pressed into service. And we won't even get into the Mann's and Wilcox's. (Or was that the Hatfields and McCoys?) I'll have to give it a good listen again to see if I may have missed anything before I comment further on the political side of it. See, this is the kind of stuff you get when you're patient. All meat and potatoes! Not a wasted word in the bunch.

After reading ahead, I found that his father does hold a seat.
-
A question. Lord granger was granted a seat in the house of lords. Since he is away, must he give his proxy to someone in his absence? If so, who would be he proxy? Cavendish? His father? Must it be someone who already has a seat? Does his father have a seat? And what would be expected of him when he was home in regards to having a seat?

Hopefully the next chapter will be here by thursday morning. I could really use something to listen to on the six hour flight to San Fun Disco. I have a show there. And the flight is super boring. Just finishing a complete listen to and I'm nearing the end of St Vincent again. I figure that by flight time I'll be ready for the sweet new chapter just before I land.

One thing that some might have missed is that Granger won't be there when the sale is done so Acting Captain Calvert will receive the other half separately from Granger thus making sure that it does not look like Granger orchestrated the whole thing. That also keeps them having to talk about splitting things up. Although it might skew things a bit if their cadre are not the same size. Geeze no wonder these things got tied up in the Admiralty for years sorting things out.

that is so cool and one of the thing I love about this story. So much history learned mixed with so much tasty flesh. We need Mr Llewelyn back. **snicker**

Hey Jay, Be welcome! And Welcome also to Myeige! You will have great incentive to finish what you start here to avoid the lynch mobs. There are parties out looking for Comicality now for his unfinished greatness. I'm sure you will find the impetus for completion here. So be welcome!

Sweet to both comments! I have an additional thought here. If the ship is to be bought back before they enter port then the additional 500 reals will have to already be on board and sorted out. Of course since it is a treasure ship, that should be no problem. And perhaps Mr Gatling will receive a tip? And perhaps the Viceroy will include a little extra for the return of the Lorenzo? I fear Mr Gatling will be lost through all this. Not to injury but to achievement. He will certainly be ready for command. Perhaps just a sloop but his own command nonetheless. Perhaps the vulture? Would Granger not be questioned as to why he sold the ship back? Surely the wealth on board is of greater value than he is selling the ship back for. His enemies will surely suggest that he is guilty of aiding and abetting the enemy. Perhaps even that his loyalties are mixed? And will his most Catholic Majesty see fit to further honor him with perhaps a villa in Spain for his service during a time of war? I can see Mr Fox having a fiel day with this information. Especially if he is aligned with Maidstone. Will we ever find out where the leak is that is making his enemies so well informed? If it turns out to be Mr Fox and we could prove it George may outrank his father when the king is done. The King's pleasure in stretching the neck of Mr Fox would be so great. Or perhaps the King would do it off handedly by rewarding Granger with an elevation of his father instead. But we still have to see what treachery Maidstone is up to. And is Caroline working to cut Maidstone off at the knees in England as well? She needs to earn her way back into the King's good graces again. Perhaps the queen will want to see her bastard grandson? (There IS a queen, right?)

good question. But I don't think that is transferable. It was a judgement in confidence that cannot be bestowed on someone by proxy.

Although the amount has never been stated we know that the Earle of Bridgemont holds significant stock in Johns Company. It may turn out that Bridgemont gets wind of what is going on and gains controlling stock then send a letter granting Bertie his power of attorney. That would allow Bertie to stop Maidstone in his tracks. It would also make the father and son's relationship solid once again. With Lord Arbour any twist is possible. So Granger may get back to find Maidstone in chains and no issues at all. At least, not bad ones. George's orders allowing this to all play out sounds like someone is giving Maidstone enough rope to hang himself. Perhaps literally. It's also possible that Bridgemont is behind Maidstone because he needs to know where Bertie would stand when the choice is money or family. And with the privy council's letter of empowerment, Granger may walk in and be the solidifying party, the hangman or the one who has to take his brother into custody. Who knows, anything could happen.

Ain't it though? At least its not taxed . . . yet.

A good chapter. I'm a little miffed that we waited this long on a cliff hanger that wasn't resolved but it was a good chapter. As usual you generate more questions without answering the ones generated before. What is Annie up to. Now, "What is the butthead up to?" As for Annie, we know she;s known from the beginning. She just hasn't voiced it yet. Now we can add to the question roster, What is HE up to and what was said between Seth and Annie? And are you really going to try and pass off the horse as being gay too? hmmm . . . well he IS a mammal. We know other species are gay, chimps, rabbits, ferrets. Why not, I guess it flies. I mean look at Mr Ed, He really liked Wilbur. I just hope he's not a top. It'll give a whole new meaning to horsing around. I can hear Billy now, "No teeth! No teeth!"

Jimmy I didn't mean to imply that you were anything but a hungry fan like the rest of us. And I do the same, make a gentle comment just to let him know we're still here. And yes, I'll be on it like a hungry hooker facing foreclosure doing a hundred dollar bj.

Mark, Quality creates its own demand. We've become a fast food society. Spoiled by instant almost everything. I confess, I never thought about the possibility of an island not yet having been discovered, let alone the possibility of inhabitant hostilities. It sounds like it could easily become a research nightmare. And the Pacific has it own flukes as far as natural ocean currents, storms and hisacanes. You also have the warm waters coming north and the arctic waters coming south and the mess where they meet and go further west like an express current. Now if you get an Easterly wind and a strong westerly current you have undertoes, whirlpools and waves that would swallow you and pull your ship under. The Pacific is a mixed bag, not neat and orderly like the Atlantic where things are pretty much a constant and predictable. The Pacific is also a lot less explored at that point in time too. Add the human factors of the characters and then add in a storyline with a mission and I'm truly amazed at the amount of words you manage to crank out monthly. I too get a little jealous when I see a CAP chapter posted. But I try and put it in perspective and just know that when it does come out it is such that CF Forester's work looks like Curious George and the man with the yellow hat by comparison. And I know it must be irritating for you sometimes. But for us, its just that damn good and that's why we whine. If it wasn't the absolute best out there, you wouldn't have the whiners. (I'm included in that statement.) I know that sometimes I do it too. It can be a fine line between being a fan and being a troll. We just love it and want to squeeze every word we can out of ya. It IS an addiction. So try not to get too frustrated with us. Just smile and know that you've kept it 'that' good. And no matter how long it takes to build a chapter, they are SO good that you'll still have readers. Look at Cosmie, a year and a half to two years between chapters on some of his 60 open stories. But his fan base just keeps growing. Thanks for making them so good. r
