California Culture: Circa 2000
PrivateTim replied to Mark Arbour's topic in Mark Arbour Fan Club's Topics
The song was actually inspired by an actual street in NJ named Pleasant Valley Way, which sounds like a phony Hollywood street name, but the lyrics perfectly described the San Fernando Valley Experience. The Valley started to boom because of WWII as people came west for jobs in the defense plants and then really took off in the post war years as GIs came home ready to settle down and make babies. They couldn't churn out tract homes fast enough to fill the demand. I always maintain that it was the closing of the auto plants in the Valley that lead to the rise of the porn industry, no pun intended. Anyway, the song is perrrrrfect for the SF Valley, even if it was written about someplace else. -

I've never considered Universal Studios as part of the Valley since it sits on top of the hill bordering Hollywood and the Valley. Here is the quintessential Valley song. Here is the Valley my aunt remembers.... -

Wait..... you mean chicks pretend to like you to get things out of you? Next you'll be telling me they fake orgasams too...... If Arbour has any nads, Mary Ellen will turn out to have been lying before, but now she'll really get pregnant by JJ.

Joe Paterno's 111 Wins Restored to Penn State
PrivateTim replied to methodwriter85's topic in The Lounge
Except of course the incident in question happened in 2002, well after Sandusky had retired from coaching. Had the grad assistant stepped in and said, "pull your penis out of that boy Jerry", called the police with the boy still dripping wet from the showers with his anal cavity expanded, it would have been awfully tough for police to ignore and I can't imagine any policeman sweeping the penetration of a 10 year old under any rug...... shagging a uni co-ed is one thing, popping 10yo's another. -
Yeah I recall when I was 16 how much the character of the skank ho bag I was banging mattered....

I am actually okay if the door hits you on the ass on the way out.......

Joe Paterno's 111 Wins Restored to Penn State
PrivateTim replied to methodwriter85's topic in The Lounge
No. A simple phone call from the graduate assistant to the police was all that was needed. HE was the person in the in the best position to do something to stop the rapes BECAUSE HE WAS WATCHING IT. The grad assistant didn't need to tell anyone but the police. -

Oh hun, there is nothing inoffesive about rolled up denim shorts, a tank top when you aren't built and ugly European sandals. We only laugh behind their backs of course so they don't know we are assholes, but the affected lifestyle and dress of the "hipsters" is what we laugh at more than the actual clothes, but when you see the complete package it does become an object of derision, especially if they are drinking PBR and pretending it is a decent beer. The very pretentiousness of dinking a non-pretentious beer so you can be cool because you are so non-pretentious is a tough loop to get your mind stuck in. In the beach town I live in men's sandals never have back straps unless you are going surfing someplace to requires a walk down the cliffs, then you bust out the Reefs you use in Baja. -

Despite the incredible accuracy of Wikipedia, I think Orange County was already pretty popular as one of the top tourist destinations in the U.S. No one I knew talked about "The OC" other than to mock it the way we mock "hipsters" now. Schwartz was clueless about Orange County when he wrote The OC, he wrote it from an outsiders prospective with his preconceived ideas and biases. They say "write what you know" and Schwartz's lack of knowledge was glaringly obvious. The Real OC, by way of contrast was accurate in showing one slice of one town, but teens in La Habra and Westminster wouldn't have recognized half of what went on as being "real" and not the Real OC, which is a much more complex place. -

Joe Paterno's 111 Wins Restored to Penn State
PrivateTim replied to methodwriter85's topic in The Lounge
Of course it is fair. What was going on with the assistant coach had nothing to do with wins on the field. Penn State did not have a competitive advantage in the same way that a school that allows players to be paid does. The NCAA was way out of their jurisdiction here which is why they had to reverse their decision. They had an indefensible position. The bigger question is why didn't the prosecutors prosecute the administrators and coaches who knew, including the assistant who saw the abuse, didn't stop it and didn't call the the police directly right then and there. -
I hope the Grangers insist on Mary Ellen being seen by an OB/Gyn in the UK, I still don't believe she is great with child. I feel badly for JJ, if I was him I'd go find Jeff Gillooly to punch her in the stomach.

Who's 38?? No one I know.....

I get that there needs to be a storyine, but I can not see any pressure that anyone could bring to make Alex marry Mary Ellen if he doesn't want to. Even in the peerage I don't think shotgun weddings are a thing in the 21st century. Glad that JJ and Alex seem to be in a good place. Why didn't Darius just kick Will in the balls? And Darius can apply for the SEALS, but Brad certainly has the juice to get his application rejected.
-
Ummm, if JJ wouldn't admit it, how do you know it? I don't recall any textual references to Alex's title that would suggest that was what JJ found attractive. I do seem to recall some passages where Alex physically turned JJ on.

I never thought of Isidore as a "high powered" business woman. She ran a successful construction company, but she wasn't a hard bitten Leona Helmsly nor even a Martha Stewart. I can't imagine Claire conforming to what her in-laws would want, Claire as always been very independent. As to "neo-conservatism", you obviously have no idea what it means. The 1980s was the ascent of classical conservatism in the Goldwater/William F Buckley tradition. In the 1980s the neo-conservatives were still the Straussians, the anti-Soviet left, largely Jewish and mostly Democrats. Marie at 16 has no idea what she wants any more than any other 16 year old.

British blue-bloods have always been interested in American green-bloods. The American gets status, the Brit gets to put a new roof on the country house.

For those interested, here is the Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) Library at the University of California San Diego, near Geisel's home in La Jolla.

I am going to go on record and say I don't believe Mary Ellen is preggers for a lot of reasons, just two of which are 1) I think a woman as active as she is would either be on the pill or using other devices and 2) Alex is not so stupid as to not wear a raincoat.
-
I have a very hard time believing that that skanky 'ho Mary Ellen isn't on birth control. I also think that Will “don’t fuckin’ tell me how to live my life” Schluter is once againa raging hyocrit. It is none of his damn business what Darius does and certainly not his place to call out Darius in front of the family.
-
Will ain't Tonto. Will is the hypocrit in change. "Don't tell me how to live my life or tell me I am stupid for doing it and don't call me vain because I think I know better than people with much more life experience than my sheltered, cloistered Malbu/Palo Alto billionaire scion life at 16, but let me tell you based on my life experience how wrong and stupid you are."
