    Chapter X

We drove back to the estate in silence. It was a short drive, but nonetheless uncomfortable; at times I caught Gregory’s eyes in the rearview mirror. He was watching me with this strange, puzzled look, intently, like he was looking for something and couldn’t see or find it. I was glad when he parked the car in front of the house and got out; the silence was getting very uncomfortable, as was his staring, and it was very strange to be the one who was driven, after spending years chauffeuring old

    Chapter IX

I’d called a cab from my room before leaving and waited for it at the gate, having walked the distance with the heavy suitcases. It arrived at the same time another cab turned into the driveway. The second cab stopped, and the backseat window rolled down. “Chris?” Seth Montgomery’s voice sounded. “What are you doing here?” “Good evening, Seth. I’m just about to leave. Give my regards to William.” “Do it yourself,” William’s voice came from beside Seth. He leaned forward. “What

    Chapter VIII

January 5th, 2011, Greenwich, CT I remembered the incredible relief that had flooded me when the news came that, by some kind of miracle, I was in the clear. To this day, I’m still somewhat amazed about that; some of the ‘clients’ I had been with had been unsavory at best. Add to that the string of sleazy motel rooms, bad hygiene, unsafe sex; at least some of the tests should have been positive. These days, I get a full physical every year, and everything’s checked. Never mind I hadn’t b

    Chapter VII

I won’t lie; during the wait for my test results, I became scared. Every itch suddenly became a source of fear, every cough a reason for worry. It was a time spent in reflection, thinking about the stupid things I had done in the last few months, and for what? If I added everything I had received for it, and I remembered every penny (which had been spent as fast as I’d received it), I didn’t even get to a figure that even remotely equaled the risk I had taken. It was a sobering time. To ta

    Chapter VI

When I rejoined Mr. Montgomery, a side table had been set while I’d been away, on it a selection of sandwiches. It made my mouth water just by looking. I chose a croissant with…what was that? A little taste with my pinky revealed it to be marmalade. Not bad. I also chose one with ham, putting both on a plate and then went to join Mr. Montgomery, who’d been watching me as soon as I’d come in. I made a slowly turn for him. “Better?” He smiled and nodded. “Much better, Chris

    Chapter V

May 22nd 2005, New York. I ate in silence while my mind went into overdrive. This was the chance of a lifetime! A second start; one I shouldn’t screw up. Not that I’d dream of doing that. I knew how life on the other side was, and it wasn’t pretty. This could solve all my problems and what’s more; it’d get me off the street and out of the, sometimes, degrading business of selling sex for a roof or food. Meanwhile, Mr. Montgomery waited patiently, watching me eat, and smiling when I m

    Chapter IV

January 5th, 2011, Greenwich, CT I smiled to myself as I remembered that conversation, so long ago and the beginning, indeed, of a very fruitful relationship. But there was still one person whom I owed a phone call and there was no more evading it. Picking up the receiver, I steeled myself to what was undoubtedly going to be an unpleasant conversation. Oh, Gregory would be civil; he always was. Gruff and rude, but civil. Impatient. He would start barking orders right away and treat me li

    Chapter III

Basil took me to a room that would fit right into the Waldorf Astoria; it had about the size of the living room of my earlier mentioned apartment; the bathroom was about the size of its kitchen and the tub could easily have been substituted for the small pantry over there. Once I entered the bathroom, turned on the taps, put in the good stuff and the scent of bathing oil filled my nostrils, another pungent scent obliterated it; my own. Oh. My. God. Did I smell like that? I had no idea. Onl

    Chapter II

May 22nd 2005, New York. Star Wars Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith had been out for three days now and I couldn’t even get a ticket. Well...I didn’t have the money. One lousy ticket and I couldn’t even cough up enough dough to go see the most anticipated movie in decades! Damn. George Lucas owed it to the world to make up for that piece of shite that was the 2nd installment; from what I’d seen in trailers, this one did. If only I hadn’t wasted my last couple of dollars on lottery tickets.

    Chapter I

After I let the Cognac do its work, it somehow calming my insides a little, I picked up the phone and dialed the first number, contacting the middle son, William Montgomery. A woman picked up, sounding sleepy and, as far as I knew, he didn’t have a maid so this would be one of his ‘sweetheart of the week” - ladies he enjoyed so much, much to the chagrin of his father, who’d kept him on somewhat of a tight leash these days. “Yes hello. May I speak to the man lying next to you, please. Thi

    Prologue

January 5th, 2011, Greenwich, CT The day I came into the employ of Mr. Montgomery was the best day of my life. How that came about is still a stretch to the imagination. Before then, my life had been a mixture of screw ups, bad luck, financial woes (leading to numerous involvements in shady get-rich-quick schemes), and finally hitting rock bottom by ending up living on the street, selling my body for food and a roof over my head for the night. When he came along, my life changed for the be

    Chapter 51

Oy, I'm a nurse and only work nights. Building a new warehouse and then refit the old one would more than double the cost.

    Chapter 38

I changed it, years ago. I like it better, still. The old version just sucked.

    Chapter 41

Jay is a fookin' dickhead. I can't off him, but....I can do something else. He'll 'appear' in the story again, but even he won't like it.

    Chapter 51

LOL! Why thank you for your comment. I appreciate it. And you can see it's taken a VERY long time for this story to continue, so you've arrived at the right time. I am determined to finish this. Might I also point to THAW (The House Always Wins)? It's my personal favorite.

    Chapter 51

Thank you! I am writing again, I'm loving it. I hate these chapters of exposition, though...but necessary.
