  1. Ok, so as most people know, I'm not much of an environmentalist. I believe that global warming is a hoax and that we need to industrialize Africa so that the people of that continent can enjoy the fruits of a thriving economy. I also believe that relaxing environmental standards on industry will benefit the entire world in the long run. But I'm not completely void of environmental stewardship. I stopped eating red meat, pork and chicken almost a month ago and I'm working on my pesky addiction to seafood as we speak. I also drive a gas stingy Japanese car (a Honda Civic) and have taken a vow never to own an SUV or an American made (GM, Ford, Chrysler) car. But I think that's not enough. So here's my new pledge. I vow never to buy a subscription to a major newspaper or magazine. In 2006, it was estimated that it took nearly 4 billion trees a year to publish newspapers around the world alone. That's not including magazines. In the United States alone, we consume 187 billion pounds of paper each year. Add to that the fact that most newspapers are delivered by cars, and most likely, not very nice cars. Or even worse, if it's a big paper route, a truck or SUV, and that's some horrible pollution all the way around. So I'm asking anyone who reads this to reconsider your subscription to the newspaper. You can read the news online just as easily, and with minimal damage to the environment. Also, cancel your magazine subscriptions and read them online too. Or better yet, don't get online subscriptions to the newspapers and magazines because of the selfish way that they've destroyed our environment. Look for publications that are published exclusively online and give them your business instead. Ok, I'm done now.

  6. Well, I definitely look at other sites for stories, but none of them are listed above, so I clicked on other. I post my work at Nifty, so I'm always checking that site out. Also, there's a story I used to follow called Substitute Dad by Scribe (not our Jack Scribe) that seems to have lost steam. Anyway, I also used to go to RCWP to look for work by Lee Mariner, but the updates on that site are so sporadic that I've practically given up. I read stories at Deweywriter too. The difference between GA and other sites with forum communities is night and day. There's a sense of belonging here, no matter how many people you actually know. Right from the get go I was comfortable and felt good about jumping right in to the Domaholic's discussion forum with my dead on analysis about who Luke and Rory would wind up with, and how Mrs. Moore and Murphy from The ordinary Us would shack up. We formed different camps like LR*TE and SRITE and LGAITE, and it was fun. But that doesn't happen on other sites. Another thing to consider is the fact that at least 3 out of the 4 story sites you listed are geared toward people over 60, so it's hard to fit in if you aren't in that age group. Here, everyone's welcome no matter what they're ideals are. That's what makes this place so refreshing over all of the other sites on the internet. As for why GA is important to me, I had to pick the option that said there were too many reasons to list. I'll just say that there's no other site like it, and I doubt there ever will be.
  7. I wrote my entire Summer 2007 Anthology story while I listened to the songs Michelle, In My Life and And I Love Her. I still prefer Al Stewart over anyone else when it comes to classic rock, though
  8. I'm sure that if the lawmakers in Wisconsin aren't smart enough to pass a new bill protecting couples who travel outside the state to be married, the courts will step in. Personally, I think that if the couple in the article are tried, they'll win and the case will set a legal precedent that will repeal that type of law in every state.
  9. Wisconsin Gay Couples Could Face Jail For Marrying In California by 365Gay.com News Center Staff LINK (Madison, Wisconsin) Same-sex couples from Wisconsin who go to California to marry could find themselves facing criminal charges when they return home. A little known Wisconsin law makes it a criminal offense to enter into a marriage outside the state if that marriage were illegal in Wisconsin. While the law was passed decades ago to prevent underage couples from crossing state lines to marry it could be used against same-sex couples the Madison Capital Times reported Wednesday. The penalty is a fine of up to $10,000, nine months in prison, or both. Wisconsin law limits marriage to opposite-sex couples. Same-sex marriage became legal in California following a state Supreme Court ruling that went into effect June 17. Unlike Massachusetts which limits gay marriage only to out-of-state couples whose marriages would be legal at home the California ruling opened up marriage to anyone. LGBT civil rights group Fair Wisconsin is warning couples they could face arrest if they marry in California. It is not known how many gay and lesbian couples from the state have wed in California. One couple from Madison who are preparing to marry say they are willing to take the chance. "It would be interesting to be prosecuted," Bob Klebba who is planning to marry longtime partner David Waugh told the Capital Times. "It would really bring up a reaction in the public sentiment." In 2006, Wisconsin voters approved a constitutional amendment limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples. Fair Wisconsin said it is now focusing its efforts on seeking passage of bills granting recognition of domestic partnerships. Spokesperson Glenn Carlson said he is hopeful of getting a bill passed in the next session of the legislature.
  10. American Family Association calls for boycott of McDonald's by Roger Sinasohn Jul 6th 2008 9:01AM I've heard of a lot of reasons why people avoid "Old McDonald's", as the famous fast food chain is known around our house -- the general unhealthiness of the food, the destruction of the rainforests, their marketing through school notices, and so on -- but the American Family Association has come up with a new one. The AFA is calling for a boycott of the golden arches because the company is "promoting the homosexual agenda, including homosexual marriage." According to AFA founder and chairman Rev. Don Wildmon, McDonald's is "promoting a lifestyle that would utterly destroy the traditional family." He's right, of course -- now that my neighbors are allowed to get married, my wife and I are required to get a divorce and I have to shack up with a guy. McDonald's has said in the past that it is "a company that actively demonstrates its commitment to the gay and lesbian community" -- I guess for some, that's a reason to boycott them; for me, it's a reason to support them.
  11. So basically what you're saying is that Rush Limbaugh is one of your favorites?
  12. NEW YORK - Rush Limbaugh will make about $38 million a year to continue his radio show over the next eight years. In addition, he says will be getting a nine-figure signing bonus from Premiere Radio Networks. ADVERTISEMENT Premiere wouldn't disclose details of the deal but Limbaugh gave the information to The New York Times for an article to be published Sunday. Limbaugh's three-hour show, broadcast from his office in Florida, is heard on some 600 radio stations across the country. More than 14 million people listen to him at least once a week, according to Talkers magazine. Sean Hannity is second with more than 13 million listeners. "This is exactly where I want to be, doing what I was born to do, with an amazing audience and phenomenal support from affiliate stations and sponsors," Limbaugh said in a statement. "I'm having more fun than a human being should be allowed to have." He declined an interview request from The Associated Press. Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" this year showed his continuing influence in political discourse. He urged his listeners to vote for Hillary Clinton to keep the Democratic nomination fight going in the hopes of hurting Barack Obama. Limbaugh, however, is no big fan of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, even though he prefers him to Obama. Limbaugh, 57, said in January that if McCain were nominated "it's going to destroy the Republican Party." Keeping Limbaugh in the fold is crucial if radio is going to be competitive with the Internet and satellite radio, said Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers. "It shows that there's a strong commitment on the part of one of the leading companies in our industry to remain viable for the next decade," he said. "If radio is going to continue and to survive it's got to do what it takes to keep its biggest players happy and exclusive to radio." Premiere Radio Networks, which is owned by Clear Channel Radio, is also partners with Limbaugh in "The Limbaugh Letter," a monthly newsletter, and the Web site RushLimbaugh.com. The company also syndicates "The Rush Limbaugh Morning Update," a 90-second commentary that airs Monday through Friday. Charlie Rahilly, Premiere president, said advertiser and affiliate demand for Limbaugh's show is at an all-time high. Despite the reported big price tag, Rahilly said: "It's a really rational decision ... It's great for Premiere and Clear Channel." He said there are new media opportunities that can make the deal more lucrative in the coming years. For example, the possibility of streaming Limbaugh material on demand on the computer, or making commentaries available on wireless devices, are potential future ways to raise revenue.

  21. Well, my favorite author has been MIA for a long time, but my original reason for being at GA was to read his stories. The secondary reason was to discuss his work, and my third reason was that I started writing stories myself because I was so inspired by my favorite author. So my choices are as follows: The regular stories The community aspect/feel of the forums The Blogs
  22. For my millions and millions of fans and adoring readers out there, holding on as tight as you can for chapter 18, I have good news. 23. I have to see two married people I can barely stand to look at every single day :nuke:
  24. I think that the days of marriage being defined as a union of two people in the eyes of the law or in the eyes of God are coming to an end. I mean, in reality, the idea is antiquated and something that at some point, society as a whole will come to abandon. Personally, I think that marriage is something that should be, well, personal. The government has no right to issue licenses, and while any church can certainly recognize anything it wants, those who don't practice any sort of religion or who don't carry beliefs will still commit to each other. So, after all of that, here's my stance.... I don't think I want to get married because it would go against everything I believe in. Like I said before, the function of the government isn't to recognize a union between two people. As a minarchist, applying for a marriage license would be hypocritical. The love, trust and respect that I share with whomever I choose to spend the rest of my life with is worth more than some crappy piece of paper, anyway.
