  1. Thanks, Gary. I'm really pleased that you've been reading and commenting on the Soldier's Guide. It's not a long story but there are a few twists and turns. I dare not say anymore.
  2. Thanks Dave, but you're not getting away that easy. I've got a load of other stuff that isn't dark and isn't teen angst either. It just hasn't been written yet!
  3. Thanks @Carlos Hazday. I'm always hungry to learn and improve, and trying new things helps me to feed this hunger. Your help has been priceless and I hope it doesn't end with this story. I know you've been reading the Cockney Canuck and I think you're a brave man. I can't bear to even look at the early chapters. After nearly 3 years a hundred chapters and more words than 'War and Peace', I really wanted to get away from Robbie and prove to myself and others that I could write something completely different. The Soldier's Guide may be a little too different for most people's taste but no one can accuse me of playing safe. I'll send over the rest of the story for you. 🙄
  4. Thank you @Parker Owens for you kind words, advice and encouragement.
  5. Thanks @Freerider Not much more to post of the Cockney Canuck now. I know I've been saying this for a long time but Robbie and supporting cast will soon be taking a bow. I know that it's been popular but for me it will be a relief to close the book and move on to other things. A Soldier's Guide will not be to everyone's taste and it is dark in places but I have other stories up my sleeve and under my hat!
  6. Thanks Val. Actually Jeff has done better than I thought he would. I was expecting to face an angry mob but the reaction among readers hasn't been that bad. Maybe people are expecting me to turn him into a hero in which case, they may be disappointed.

Jeff will have to conquer the booze and also start to deal with the issues that he is constantly trying to blot out. His brother will be important if he will listen to him. Not too many twists and turns in this one. Most are quite predictable and I expect Jeff's inability to see the obvious will have a few people pulling their hair out. Thanks @Sweetlion

I think that the site cut out just after I posted the chapter which was annoying. I think that you've hit it pretty much spot on here with Jon. In my mind he is not really homophobic but he doesn't really understand it and as you point, he sees Simon as someone who coming between him and his brother. You explain it a lot better @Israfil

    Pleasant Surprises

Thanks @waybig for your comment. Yes Jeff is very much a product of his time even. You're are the first person I believe to name an exact year. It's a bit earlier than that but reasonably close.

I know that we all have to endure grief at some stage in our lives and we all have to lose our parents (that's the way it should be, I guess). It's even worse when it's the other way around. In the story Kate died because of illness. I'm glad you managed to come to grips with your own personal demons and wish you well.

It may be a good to stand well back. Jeff isn't known for his diplomacy. Thanks @frigidjason

Thanks, Gary for your in depth comment. You're right about Jeff avoiding potentially difficult situations. He's been doing it with everyone. Not just with his kids but his brother and even his next door neighbor. He's keeping his head in the sand rather than deal with issues that he's uncomfortable with including simple things like interacting with his children. I suppose, that would come naturally to most people but Jeff has got to learn how to do this. It's no longer possible for him to ignore this latest development with Simon but judging by what we know of him so far, it doesn't bode well for the two boys.

    Stormy Weather

Thanks @empresslovesreading I would say that's a pretty good description of Jeff at the moment. He has a lot of learning to do and a few willing teachers around him but will he listen before it's too late?

    Stormy Weather

Yeah, Jack has been a constant companion to Jeff who's becoming increasingly dependent on him at the expense of his children. He may want to be a good father but at the moment he definitely isn't behaving like one. Thanks @Ivor Slipper

    Stormy Weather

Absolutely. For much of his life, Jeff's family were the men in his platoon, who he fought alongside. I can only imagine what that would be like but it does explain away his awkwardness and inability to interact with his family. You're right about them wanting to keep this from him for as long as possible. Thanks doughtquake.

Thanks, Tim. It couldn't be anymore obvious but Jeff is safer with his head in the sand.

Very removed and quite distant I'd say but there's something there to work on, I suppose. Thanks @deville

Thanks Carlos. He does have some qualities but they're not easy to see under all that mess.
  19. Tom at work was right after all. On Monday, as he predicted, the City Council announced sweeping cuts and a number of job losses across all departments. It was a relief to discover my job wasn’t one of them and I celebrated with a few of the other survivors at Mario’s bar that evening. I was begrudgingly forced to admit maybe Tom did have some inside knowledge and I bought him a drink before retreating to a cubicle with Sandra. Tom’s misogynistic nature kept him away from the opposite sex bu

You won't find any of me in anything I write. Nope, not at all.....Not even a little bit!

    Chapter 8

Things are definitely looking up for Jackson and going in the right direction with Carter. I'd say this is very good progress but I'm not sure exactly who is leading who?

    Chapter 6

He's going to polish his shoes.

    Chapter 5

Interesting developments for Jackson but I'm still wary of Carter.

    Chapter 4

What a horrible morning after for Jackson. I think Carter remembers everything but not a nice way to act. Nothing like a lesson in chemistry to get things moving.

    Chapter 3

I kinda figured Jackson's luck would run out soon or was this the first mistake in Carter's perfectly executed plan?
