You are absolutely right @Crazyd1965 Jeff has a lot to learn about parenting and he's about to be tested to the limits by two teenage son's. He's unprepared and not willing to accept advice. He'll need to spend more time at home and less time at the bar.
-
Thank you @deville This is a very good guess and a very good take on the story. You may be right on both counts. As for the time and place, well, there will be clues in each chapter and I will confirm at the end.
-
Thank you @nighthawke I hope it can keep your interest.
-
Thank you @quttzik I think I may have opened a can of worms here but I'm glad that it has got people thinking. I probably put too many clues in the opening chapter but I didn't think that people would be that interested in finding out. I was going to reveal the answers in chapter 10 which is the last chapter but I suspect that it will be guessed correctly a long time before that.
-
Thanks @JayT I admit to being a little crafty with the years here but it will make sense as the story unfolds and we learn more about Jeff's role in Vietnam. I wish i hadn't given so many clues in the first chapter but it's got a few people guessing.

Thanks Steve. Looks like the year and place thing has drummed up a bit of interest. Nothing like a bit of blatant self-publicity. I probably left too many clues in the first chapter so I don't expect it will be too long before people guess correctly. I did a lot of research for this story and the 'dimes in the payphone' is a big clue that was well-spotted. Canada didn't officially participate in the Vietnam War, other than as a destination for draft dodgers, so it's safe to say the location is somewhere in the US. I doubt if Jeff will escape your judgement for very long in this story. Let's just say, he won't prove to be the most popular of guys.

Jeff was not very involved with raising his kids when his wife was alive and is learning how difficult it can be. He's been trained to fight the Vietcong but he's totally out of his depth when it comes to dealing with two teenage sons who don't follow the same doctrine. Thanks for reading @Sweetlion

Thanks for reading and commenting Gary. Jeff is definitely not an endearing man and he's not going to win any popularity contests, particularly on this site. There are, however, aspects of his character that most people will be able to identify with and of course, there are reasons why he is the way that he is. I have a feeling that most people will like Todd.

Thanks for reading and commenting Tim. Jeff has some very serious problems which he needs to address but like so many in his situation instead of working to solve these issues he's trying to blot them out with alcohol. They just come back worse and soon the alcohol becomes an even bigger problem. We all know the story but I hope this will be a slightly different take on a well-worn theme. It's not a particularly long story (10 chapters) and it's finished and being edited so I plan to post every week.

I hope that's a good 'Wow'. Thanks for reading @tinytoes

Thank you @Daddydavek It is a familiar theme and I would say that Jeff is certainly showing signs of PTSD and the reasons become more apparent as the story develops. The story is a little bleak I'm afraid and I can't promise too many lighthearted moments as the character comes to terms with some serious issues. Thank you for reading and commenting.

“David, are you listening to me?” “Yes.” “Then what did I just say?” “You asked me not to make a mess.” “I mean it, I don’t wanna come home tonight and have to start cleaning up after you. That applies to you too, Jon.” “I know Dad.” “Anyone coming over today?” “Just Simon.” Simon…again. The kid lives here. “Is Suzanne up?” The two boys looked at each other and shook their heads. “Can one of you please go and check to see if she’s awake?” I took a gulp of coff

After losing his wife to illness, a decorated war hero is determined to keep his family together, but his parenting skills are tested during the summer break by financial restraints, an increasing reliance on alcohol, and the discovery that his eldest son is gay.

Hello @frigidjason Thank you for your interest in this story. It will be continuing in the next few days. Sorry for delay, I hope you enjoy the rest of the story.

This is a bit of a shock although like most, I knew that she wasn't well. 55 is too young to die. Thank you for your support Moggy.

Chapter 7 Another Man's Shoes
Dodger commented on Headstall's story chapter in Chapter 7 Another Man's Shoes
I know what you're saying Drew and logic says that you're right. In which case life would be so easy but with relationships and especially ex-relationships logic goes out of the window. He probably wants nothing more than to hate Richard but he doesn't. Confrontational no, of course not. We're having a difference of opinion. Life would be boring if we all thought the same. -

Yeah I know that's what Drake said but he must still has feelings there for him. If not, he would have been able to tell Richard where to go and walk away laughing. He wouldn't have allowed Richard to kiss him or agreed to keep in touch either. He's definitely not over him yet and Richard knows that. -
Chapter 7 Another Man's Shoes
Dodger commented on Headstall's story chapter in Chapter 7 Another Man's Shoes
Okay, I know that it's not easy when dealing with an ex-partner who hurt you but Richard got off light here. He has to be pleased with the outcome, I'm surprised he wasn't skipping back to Bernadette. Drake obviously still has feelings for him but he really needed to man up here and tell Richard exactly where to get off. He dithered and now he's allowing that slime ball to get his foot in the door when he should have locked and bolted it twice. Unfortunately, this isn't the best result for Jimmy, who's waiting patiently in the wings but won't be there forever. A missed opportunity I'm afraid and although I feel sorry for Drake he's a wimp. Great chapter and wonderful dialogue Gary. -
It's a shame that these games get very little coverage in Canada even though I'm sure we must have sent over a team. I didn't even know that the games were on until I read your thread. With the hockey play-offs about to start and the baseball season under way, nothing else seems to matter over here.

Thank you @Okiegrad for your comment. The thought of Don having two gay sons may be too much for him to handle but Daniel hasn't a gay bone in his body or as you point out he would've been with Nathan who has always had a crush on his best friend.
-
Thank you @dachcr Alex moving in will certainly throw the cat among the pigeons and may not be to Nathan's liking. It's about to get very busy at the Taylor house.
-
Thanks Steve. Yes, I think that prat would sometimes be a good description of Robbie and maybe Alex is a good influence on him. He certainly gets Robbie thinking and brings him down to earth a little. We will see about Daniel.
-
Normally boxer briefs but I think that Nathan would have been jealous no matter what Robbie was wearing just being in Alex's company is enough, which doesn't bode well considering that Alex is moving in!
-
Thank you @SolarMaxx It's good to be back. Yes, everyone is in party mode for this chapter, we will see how things pan out in the morning. No guarantee that Robbie won't find a way of messing up though.
-
Thanks for your comment @Butcher56 Robbie and Nathan are not going to get a lot of alone time at the party but maybe when they get to Palm Springs. Alex's presence in the house is bound to cause a few waves and annoy Nathan, I suppose it depends on how long he stays for.
