Emmett spent as much time as he could over the following weekend out of the house. Zeke had to work, which was both vastly inconvenient, because it meant that Emmett had to go home at night, but also useful because Zeke had been kind of pissed at him since he’d woken up to find that his boyfriend had come all over his sheets in his sleep. Some of us are Like with anything, give it time. The mainstream will catch up eventually. Until then, there are plenty of stories and novels with complex gay characters (Alan Hollinghurst, John Spanbauer, Jamie O'Neill, Jesse Hajicek) for you to choose from. And of course, plenty of stuff here on GA. The only way any of it is going to get on television is by saturation. When there's too much good stuff to ignore, suddenly you'll start seeing what you want. And hey, Orange Is The New Black hardly featured rainbow-bubblegum characters.

I think what Graeme said was poignant and beautiful and important. For me, the issue would not have been the orientation, but the cheating. That I could not forgive. Even if your sexuality changes, or someone decides not to live their life with the sexuality they'd pretended was true, going behind your spouse's back is never an acceptable answer. I'd be more understanding of the couple in the article if he'd not cheated, and come out to her, and they'd remained friends (or even lived together for the sake of children/family/etc) but aid their sexual relationship was over. In my universe, cheating on someone is just never OK.

As A Writer/artist Who Has Influenced You The Most?

I don't make light of how music inspires me, and I have an entire collection of stories based upon the lyrics of specific country songs. I think everyone in inspired, one way or another, by the books they read, but though I'm a big fan of Terry Pratchett, my writing style and themes are completely different. The books I find most inspiring and generally ones I have which don't reflect the rest of my collection, such as The Man Who Fell In Love With The Moon by Tom Spanbauer. But I particularly like reading what my characters read. When I wrote Tiger Winter I bought second hand and read a lot of the historical exploration account which Emmett is so fond of, and that was really interesting. I now know far more about whale hunting than I ever thought I would. -

as far as i'm aware, pandas don't have a sense of taste at all. and it's not that he doesn't like meat, he just doesn't like food pretty much at all. funny boy. Zeke's not stupid, you get an Emmett in your life you'd better hold on tight!

romance isn't everything (says the hopeless romantic), and sometimes warmth and satisfaction in bed are good enough. But yeah, Emmett misses Rye, snow, and home in that order.
