  1. Let the Music Play by C James Reviewer: W_L Status: Complete Word Count: 287,713 Before he wrote the epic Circumnavigation, Cjames crafted this fun novel about being part of a rock band, in every sense of the concept. From road crew to bandmate, Brandon's journey is beautifully told from being a lonely poorly-paid sound tech to millionaire-rocker with the dream boyfriend, in addition to a subtle nuclear conspiracy behind the scenes to add a little surrealism to the entire storyline! I was drawn in by the interesting plot and promise of the story as I think many readers upon the first few chapters. To me, Cjames is a master of incorporating tragic plot elements like abandoned gay boys, lost dreams, and feelings of hopelessness with the adrenaline-pumping action of thrillers like gunfights (He has that in here later on), evil mastermind (Scar!), and a live demonstration that any Bond villain would drool over (Australians beware!). In this novel, he reminds me of a mainstream gay author, Tal Bauer, who shares a similar style. Emotionally, there are points in the story that evoke different reactions from the tragedy of Brandon and Chase's family lives to the hate-filled downward spiral of Joe Clump into substance abuse. It's not just one emotion, but the entire gamut that you will see behind the scenes of famous and rich singer/musicians. I re-read this story a few times over the years, most recently after the death of Aaron Carter. Joe Clump's decline resonated for that tragedy and made me wonder how unhappy a life of fame and fortune is behind what we see from the outside with concerts and reality TV. I highly recommend this story to readers who want to rekindle dreams, seek an adventure, or want a human story about imperfect people seeking happiness. Plus, if you are happy with this story, tryreading its sequel, "Changing Lanes", which focuses on Eric, the wild middle brother of Chase, Brandon's boyfriend and bandmate in this novel (Curious, well so is Eric ! ). 2. G'day all Or is it actually Howdy y'all Afterall it is my 10 days of fun with the Stampede in full force!! So I just had the pleasusre of being sandwiched into an LRT (above ground subway but not in the air) with probably 400 of my closest friends in a single car heading home from Stampede. No one needed to worry about hanging on to handles or bars, as nobody could move enough to fall over with lurching of the train on starts and stops. Then, to everyones extreme pleasure, someone deciided that was a good time to pass gas ! Then we got stuck behind another train and we sat there with no air flow in the train for about 5 mniutes. And it didn't get less, it got worse!!! Why people, why? Anywho, I'm getting to bed at 2 AM and have to be down at the grounds today at 8 AM 😮 5 hours sleep should do it. I have to purdy myself up so need to get up a bit early. Last thing I thought I would mention, today was Gay Day! Yes, the last place you would think would have gay days would be a 10 day rodeo and exhibition with all those cowboys and cowgirls, or people wanting to be cowboys or cowgirls. Mind you over a 100,000 people go a day! Nice to see so many couples, men, women, saw a lot of trans people that were wearing trans patches, but holding hands and walking around happy as could be I shall now get the Weekly Wrap Up posted so we do not have to look at that foul mouthed, Valkyrie's blog for another day! I tell you, my mom would have had a bar of soap a the ready as she headed down to Eastern NY State to discuss the issue with Val Monday, we had the Weekly Wrap Up, up for a second day! Tuesday, Myr was at the ready to look at the oft overlooked genre of Poetry: Thursday, we had a suprise in our Anthology day. 3. First off, to our millions of Canadian members, Happy Canada Long Weekend! Sounds like it is a scorcher no matter where you are. Here in my little burg, believe it or not we have been on extreme water restrictions, like fluhing the toilet once per day, 3 min showers, no outside watering at all, etc. since 23 days ago when we had a main feeder line from our water treatment plant, big enough to drive a truck through, broke A city of 1.5 million and and 80% of the city and surrounding towns and cities get their water from there. I need to do some laundry, 2 sets of bed sheets waiting to be washed, and tend to other such duties that are better if done in the shower, so they say July 1st will be they day. Don't worry, I've been taking my 3 min showers so I don't stink . While digging up the broken piece the found 5 other pieces about to rupture further down the line. Shout out to the County of San Diego, California for helping us out as they were the only place that could spare 2 sections that we were short!! Can you believe it it the end of June! Half the year is gone. Less than 6 months to Christmas and to get my present! Also sadly in the nothern hemisphere, the days are getting shorter This also seems like a great time to remind all of our procrastinators out there, that the Secret Author Contest entries are due by July 24th. Oh, new rule, send your entries to me and I will make sure they get to @Cia NO DO NOT DO THAT, I'm just kidding Monday, Myr informed everyone of the upcoming Stories 3.7 Software Update. Remember last week I said we have to embrace change, well lets do that! Tuesday, the big guy himself was back again to go diving into the paranormal : Thursday, everyone's favourite Kentuckian male, after Colenol Sanders, was back with the big Author Guess Who Reveal: Finally we saved the best for last when we had Cole Mathews come by with a few more prompts. I was reading them and I had a totally different idea that has nothing to do with this weeks suggestions, but I think I might give it a go . Now down in the Eastern part of North America, I guess it has been hot and humid. I even heard the term 'Swamp Ass' mentioned a few times No matter how bad it was, Myr got up in the very early morning and brought us the daily Word for the Day! eagre, galactrophorous, gadzookery, gallinaceous, jabble, jentacular, jargogole For those of you that are keeping track on my poor volcabulary skills I thought I had 2 this week! But alas, not even 1 Eagre is not eager I learned. 4. Yes, I think I’ve heard morale turpitude used in novels and crime shows. I had to look it up the first time I heard it. For those commenting about ‘A Boy Named Sue’, when I wrote the comment I was 100% thinking of it. 😉 But we are aging ourselves Cassie, thanks for pointing that out. Never thought about it, but you’re 100% right. I haven’t heard Chad, but that is probably due to what Cassie said.
  5. Is it just me or is it dark in here ? Where is my menu bar? Well the say that things that don't change go stale, so keep that in mind at times when you hate change Wait, Google is dark for me too! My Documents is empty 😮 WTF 😮 A bit of a surprise when I logged in tonight. I mean everything else I have is in dark mode, so why not GA, right? The thing is, I don't know what I did or if I can reverse it I do have urgent matters to attend to tonight so we are going to to do short and to the point. First though, I wanted to discuss the word Karen, not necessarily the name. I mean I have a few friends that are named Karen, but they are not 'Karen's' Does that make sense? So I know 3 Karen's that are definitely not Karen's. I don't know an IRL Karen that is a Karen, but I'm curious, out of all the Karen's you know, how many are a Karen and how many are not? Thank gosh my parents didn't name me Karen , must be confusing. Enough nonsense, here is what happened at the GA News Blog this week. Monday, Cia was kind enough to introduce us to a new Signature Feature: Have you checked out any of the Non-Fiction genre here? Well Myr has lined up a bunch of stories that fall into that genre? Cia moseyed back in on Wednesday to give us the Signature Feature Excerpt: Thursday, Valkyrie came through for me She took a question I had and put a blog forth regarding it. Check it out: Friday, if you did not get enough Val the day before, she was back with the Prompts this week: Okay, 2 weeks in a row I did not know a single Word of the Day. 6. Too much rum the night before 🍹has my brain waking to a rataplan.
  7. Well I'm a silly boy I was enjoying a nice cool evening to fall asleep to , and was sawing a log or two, when I woke up in shock! Shock I say You ever wake up and realize you were supposed to do something and you forgot to? Usually for me it is a work thing and then I think to myself that there isn't much I can do about it until the morning and roll over and fall asleep again . Just note that happened tonight and to show my dedication to everyone and GA, I got up, jump in my wheelchair and rolled out to the desktop and here I am at like 2:45 AM doing the Weekly Update! Now you could say I wouldn't be doing this if you would have just had done it earlier and not left it to the last minute. Right? To that I say, who the hell asked you? Moving on, let's see what happened the past week at the GA News Blog. Monday, because I left something to the last minute, starting to see a pattern here 🥷, I was late posting the feature story review of a popular story done by the great Review Team, specifically @W_L: Tuesday, Mr. Myr, as he has told me that I have to address him as from now on, did a Deep Dive again: We then jump to a collision at the junction of Thursday We gave you two GA Blogs at once. First was another interesting Author Guess Who. Can you guess who? Also we had a confusing Anthology Post I got out of it that it was Val's bday the other day So pop in and give her a birthday bump or two: Friday, back to our regular programming, we had @colematthews drop on by to give us a couple of new prompts to try out: Alas, it is time to review the Words of the Day. 9. The Brilliant Boy Billionaire by Altimexis Reviewer: W_L Status: Complete Word Count: 474,949 The primary reason for reading Brilliant Boy Billionaire is its sense of first-person adventure, especially as someone who has encountered similar stories over the years, such as my first, Dewey Writer's Brian and Pete series, starting with For the Love of Pete, where the excitement of a young gay teen is explored with a complex plot and backdrop. At first, it felt like an epic road trip type story with the protagonist seeking safety and a place to belong. The first half of this story has a lot of interesting first steps for our main character, who might be "brilliant" but he notably has major issues in emotional intelligence and experience beyond technical knowledge. However, having to leave home due to an abusive situation and a major crime he committed with justification, Adam, sometimes known as Simon (rarely though), and often known as JJ (his main alias) isn't a perfect hero. He messes up a lot and he lives with his regrets. The story's rich plot includes a lot of technical details on various things from speculative physics and computer science to mundane technical details about photography and bicycle repair. In addition to a good character arc and technical details, JJ has a kinky side that would best be characterized as a fetishist, which adds a few degrees of spice to the passionate scenes if you are interested in those elements. The second half of the story deals with his journey to accept his past and grow. Despite being a genius, he's still human. He learns from life experiences, seeks out human connections, and I think found real happiness with a partner, who matches him. Though his choice in partner felt like it could have used more development, this is not a romance-centered story. Some nuances are left to our imagination. Brilliant Boy Billionaire creates a series of plot events that make me stop in the middle of chapters with joy and sadness. Life is continuously throwing new technical issues for the main character, but Altimex handles each new technical point with a depth of detail to resolutions that makes the character relatable, not as a Gary Stu tech genius with technobabble solutions every time but a practical person with limitations placed by reality. Not all things were solved perfectly by the Altimexis, especially the emotional scenes of JJ battling his evil "father" in his nightmares for a decade without severe real-world fallout, but I thought Altimexis dealt with the PTSD of child abuse with a good deal of restraint and respect as much as he could without compromising the narrative. I recommend this story, which is 84 chapters long and over 470K words because it's an epic adventure of a gay man's journey to find happiness despite his horrible beginnings in life. It may require you to hold some suspension of belief, but in exchange, you will get a great tale from the backwoods of Indiana to the major cities of the United States as a once-in-a-generation great person's life is described to you from their perspective. Category: Fiction Genres: Action/Adventure, General Fiction, Romance, Science Fiction Sub-genres: Adventure, Soft Sci-Fi, Coming of Age, Rich Boy, Contemporary Romance Tags: teen, gay, casual, coming of age, abuse Rating: Mature
  10. Have you ever gone out to dinner and thought you were hungry and then only had the waiter/waitress bring out your entree and then realized you were not that hungry? That happened tonight when a few of use went to East Side Mario's. I knew I wasn't going to eat both pieces of the chicken parmigiana and spaghetti, Italian wedding soup and the bread. But I was full after a piece of bread, half bowl of soup and not even 1 of the 2 pieces of chicken. Never mind how little of the spaghetti I actually ate. Why did I order that? Next question , remember in the good old days when the wait staff asked if you wanted the leftovers to go, and you said ya and they took your plate to the back and put it in doggy bag/box and brought it back to you? Why don't they do that anymore? I mean, when I was done I was covered in marinara sauce. Oh, maybe that is why they don't do it anymore . At least the waitress had a sense of humour and said that now that I had lunch for tomorrow I could come back for dinner tomorrow night ! Where is this random babbling leading to you ask ? We had great service and meal, like above and beyond. So when I looked over and saw a friend's tip was 0%, I felt like I had to compensate for him. Do you call him out in private? I do understand that we are being asked to tip everywhere nowadays. Maybe the exception being McDonald's. It seems like even places like Subway they expect you to tip them before you leave. Still, I think when someone, including the cook staff, give you an excellent meal that you give a bit extra to say thanks. My intention is not to start WWIII here . As I know this is one of those different point of view things that Val was talking about in this weeks prompts, but be honest, no judgement, no replies, no justification needed. Do you tip for a prepared menu out, or maybe a sandwich at Subway or a latte at Starbucks? I'll be honest, they have got me right where they want me If it is a meal out, probably going go 20% if I'm happy. In the other places, and the smallest they have is 10%, I'll choose other, and put in 5%. Now that I'm done with that, thank gosh, let's see what happened this past week on the GA News Blog. I'm always appreciative of tips, but not the ones like don't eat yellow snow . Monday was a day to get to learn about the June's CSR story, and author: Tuesday was a look at the Literary Fiction in a Deep Dive: Wednesday, first one of the month meant we were lined up for another AAA 3.0: Friday was the day that I was speaking about earlier. 16. Greetings and salutations from the GA Weekly Wrap Up For some reason I am feeling giddy today, or maybe even ducky 🦆 ! Why, I have not a clue. My washing machined died on me this morning, and I don't think that should make be feel great. We had another thunderstorm today like the past few days, which I'm not a fan of (look at someone's anthology entries ). And I went out to dinner tonight and my medium rare steak came out on the well done side. I'm not the guy to make a big deal and send it back. Just showed everyone else at the table So what is the reason? Do you have any ideas? I'm curious as to what you all think would make me feel ducky 🦆. Enough about my feelings Let's move onto more important things, like what happened all this week at the GA News Blog: Monday, it was nice to see one of our poets who participated in the 2024 NaPoWriMo to get featured in the Signature Author Feature this month: Tuesday, besides @W_L who has a thing for history? Wednesday brought Cia around for the Signature Author Excerpt: Thursday Valkyrie was very quiet as she was speaking about the secret author contest Ignore my post pleasssssse: Friday, Valkyrie let her hair (or her feathers) down to get a little freaky: This weeks Words of the Day, 3 were a bit challenging to me. 17. I still remember David Letterman giving Justin Bieber shit about his tattoos and evolving in to the great malapropism that Myr referred to Here is the entire interview in not good quality. Skip to 6:30 to see the reference . Watch the whole interview. It was one of the funniest interviews I ever saw on Letterman. And Bieber more or less held his own getting in his own shots.

  20. I can't decide where to start tonight I had an idea, an overused idea, then when thinking of that idea, I had another idea. So I have 1 new and 1 old idea. Do you have any idea how happy I am So new idea, I know a lot of stories get written here and a lot are incomplete and a lot more are complete. So here is my question, I will limit it to 3 stories. What stories would you call out to have a sequel or to continue on, ending from the final chapter? Let us know the Author, the story and throw in a link if you want. If you are not sure, it is just as easy as going to the story you like, copying the URL and then pasting it in a new post Now for the old, the weather . I'm sure many of the Commonwealth countries are having a long weekend to celebrate Victoria Day. Always a week before the US Memorial Day holiday. So this weekend in my parts, well Canada actually, is the kick off to the summer season. When you live up against the eastern slopes of the Rockies like me we have only really been in spring for a few weeks now. So it is a 50/50 chance on the weather being good, or it is sucking. Well this weekend we will have showers, thunder showers, have had tornado watches to the east and snow to the west. Oh my So I officially declare Calgary's May long weekend as sucking So if you have a long weekend or not, let me know how yours's is going? Suck, good, in the middle, bad and is that normal or not? And @Mark Arbour, don't remove the comma between suck and good 😠, I'm onto you We run a family blog around here Now onto what we are here for, to wrap things up. Monday, we had a special Review done for Comicality done by @spike382: Tuesday, @Myr was off diving again this week. This time he looked at General Fiction: With the upcoming Prompt Anthology, @astone2292 shared some great tips on how to write a short. Check it out, I really enjoyed it! Finally on Friday, we had @Cole Matthews jump into the Prompt seat and propose an interesting take on writing a prompt : Although we had a lighter week as far as blogs went, we still got in our 7 Words of the Day: habit, eager, teasel, tetanus, razzle-dazzle, windlass, zilch Upcoming Writing Events Secret Author Contest - Due July 24th 2024. 21. Don't confuse windlass with your friend that ate too many beans, a wind ass
  22. I know there is things to be said about digitizing our medical system, but in the fall when a doctor was considering give me a tetanus shot since I don't keep track of them and who remembers 10 years, he looked it up and found the last one was 6 years ago. We both agreed that there was no need for one
  23. Excellent blog Aaron. I also think it is sort of like public speaking in a way. Unless you find some investment or excitement in your topic, you’ll be nervous and flat. Something as boring as frogs croaking on a lily pad can become interesting if you find something interesting about it and go with it. If you get a chance, or someone else does, wondering if some can speak to taking a short, beyond. I guess my struggle is that I find the excitement when I’m motivated to write, but if I want to continue on and make it multi chapter story, is recovering that excitement that seems like a insurmountable challenge. But don’t let me drag your blog off topic 😇
  24. Not much of an intro needed. @spike382 did a great job at a difficult time Between the Lines by Comicality Reviewer: spike382 Status: Complete Word Count: 45,928 I will start off by saying this is probably one of the hardest reviews that I’ve ever written since I joined the Review Team back in 2017. I personally still feel a bit of shock that Comicality isn’t here with us anymore, and that he won’t see this review and leave a comment on it. I might have mentioned this elsewhere, but Comsie’s writing is what led me here to GA, after the better part of nine years reading his stories sporadically on Nifty. I had the pleasure of interacting with him since about 2015 on his personal website, on his message board here, through personal emails and PMs. I know there’s member’s here that had the opportunity to get much closer to him than me, but I’ll just say, Comsie seemed to make everybody who reached out to him with a kind word like a real friend. This is intended to be one of our regular reviews in honor of Comicality, but I hope Tim and Wildone will indulge me this little preamble. Normally I prefer to review stories that are finished, which unfortunately left with less choices that I would have liked with Comsie’s library. There is an older story that I read several years ago, that maybe some of our members here might not have had discovered yet. It’s called Between the Lines. In this story we are introduced to Eli a young college student who has just come out of the closet. He has never been in a relationship before, and is just discovering who he is. He meets a handsome, athletic, older student at a party named Chris. The two hit it off seemingly right away, and have a rather physical connection to each other, and this soon turns into a relationship. They even move in together. Eli learns though, that he might need to redefine his expectations of what a relationship is like in real life, versus what he’d always imagined. At the same time, he meets a very cute “boy next door” named Devon in his creative writing class. They become fast friends with shared interests. A bond soon forms that causes doubts within Eli about whether the relationship he’s currently in is really the right choice for him. Between the Lines is on the shorter side for a Comicality story, and yet as usual it is packed with all the joy, cuteness, jitters, anguish, anger, and pain that might be faced by younger men finding love for the first time. It also presents the idea that the person who seemed like the “right one,” might not actually be the right choice or even the only choice. I recommend pretty much all of Comicality’s writing, but for anyone unfamiliar with his works, or someone looking for a very satisfying story, Between the Lines is definitely for you. Comicality may have left us, and way too soon at that, but he left behind some of the best online fiction I’ve ever read. Anyone who hasn’t delved into his writing, I’d invite you to do so, he left behind a beautiful and lasting legacy, stories I’ll never forget.
