  3. When I was 13, I took the first volume of the Lord of the Rings out of a small library. I read it in a day and took the second volume out. I finish that in a day and took the third book out and finished that in a day. It is the only book that I have read a number of times, I still have a copy by my bed. It is a fascinating story and is the best because of it was the first. The Harry Potter series was remarkable because it got kids to read again. Kids that were interested only in games programs start to read again. I think that it is simple and concentrates in one main and a small number of supporting characters, whilst the lord of the Rings is complicated and has a number of major character. But they are aimed at a different audience. Even back in my days of yore, I was remarkable in enjoying Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter aimed at the teenage audience it is superb. Compared to some of the copys of LOTR they are gold compared to trash.
  4. ....... The other issue is a big one. I keep saying goats cannot count, and boy, did I prove it. The issue is that, even in Australia, the day after Tuesday is Wednesday, not another Tuesday. I picked Trevor's arrival date in Carnarvon very carefully, and began listing dates with greater precision as he neared Australia. This was so he'd have Thanksgiving there, and I used the 2006 calendar for this. Heck, I even checked to make sure I had the tide times right for the dates when tides are mentioned. I also kept what I was planning secret from my team, because I try to avoid giving them spoilers. (it takes away the fun of reading IMHO). So, they didn't know, and thus could not check me. All was well, until Kookaburra sailed from Carnarvon. I hadn't measured the distance to the south end of Hamelin pool, so I wrongly assumed they'd arrive there the day they sailed. But, at ten knots, nothing doing. It's too far, and they could not negotiate the winding channels of Faure Sill in darkness. So... I added the night at Faure Island. Only, I managed to overlook one little detail; when you add a night, the next day is a different day. OOPS! ....... So, if anyone had any remaining doubt that goats cannot count, this should remove all doubt. Let the teasing commence!
  5. I am told there are plenty of rabbits in Australia? Aussie Rabbits
  6. "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" was written by Eric Bogle a Scottish/Australian in 1971. In essence, it is correct, but there are a number of errors, as one would expect after 50 years. Eric's site Eric Bogle has been quoted as saying that this is the best rendition(John Mc.Dermott) of all the many covers of his song. A number of people believe it was more a subtle comment on the Vietnam War rather than a comment on the Great War where double amputees did not survive. It is is now even more appropriate, as the number of Iraq/Afghanistan double amputees is rising alarming. Although the number of songs Eic Bogle has written is enormous, another of his most covered songs is No Man's Land also known as Green Fields of France and Willie McBride. This is probably more true-full of the Great War in General.

  8. 28 July 1967 Sexual Offences Act 1967 The Sexual Offences Act 1967 was accordingly passed. It maintained the general prohibitions between men, but provided for a limited decriminalisation of homosexual acts where three conditions were fulfilled. Those conditions were that the act had to be consensual, take place in private and involve only people that had attained the age of 21. This was a higher age of consent than that for heterosexual acts, which was set at 16. Further, "in private" limited participation in an act to two people. This condition was interpreted strictly by the courts, which took it to exclude acts taking place in a room in a hotel, for example, and in private homes where a third person was present (even if that person was in a different room). The 1967 Act extended only to England and Wales, and not to Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, where all homosexual behaviour remained illegal. Provide a limited protection from prosecution, although it was believed this did not stop harassment, blackmail and extortion , by the Obscene Publication Squad at West End Central.
  9. Burlesque is a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects.[1] The word derives from the Italian burlesco, which itself derives from the Italian burla – a joke, ridicule or mockery.[2]
  10. I have never been there, but I have the vision of CJ living in an old log cabin, halfway up a mountain, a miles away from a road in North Arizona. Inside the cabin there is a huge fireplace with a roaring fire, and scattered about are various pieces of paper, with bits of circumnavigation story on them. Some of the chapters are complete some the later ones, just have the bare bones of the plot. If anybody knows where the log cabin is. I would love to know so I could raid the later ones to find out the solution. I do know that over the Christmas, new year period, CJ was ill and then trying to catch up on his day job. This resulted in a 7 to 8 week period when He missed completing a chapter. I know he had a large backload of chapters but now(the last few weeks) we are seeing the results of that illness. I know that CJ is now starting to build up a stack of future chapter but this has yet to filter through the checking editing and beta process, so there may be some times when the Monday/Tuesday chapter will be missing. As to de-ciphering the story, the only thing I can say is that the narrator never lies, but even the hero Trevor is capable of lying (deliberately or inadvertently). So I would not believe Bridget. Having said that, I found your article most illuminating, although I am not sure what is correct and what is wrong!
  11. And are you sure you have not made any?
  12. Well there is The Law Recommended Practice (Etiquette) General Practice "Speaking generally, flags are hoisted at 8:00 AM and lowered at sunset." Etiquette agrees In most small yachts flags are left flying all the time. To avoid wear and tear ensigns are sometimes taken down after twilight and flown when the skipper gets up in the morning. Also when you leave a yacht you normally take the ensign down. I do remember being in a small channel island harbour when a topsail schooner sail training ship woke up the harbour at 8.00. Half the yachts who had arrived during the early hours, did not appreciate it, and the following morning saw the colour party being drenched. Not having your ensign and courtesy flags flying during daylight in some countries is illegal, and have in the past resulted in fines(Greek Islands). "When an American Flagged vessel is: anchored, moored or tied up to a pier, the National Ensign should be flown from the flagstaff, which located at the stern. This is considered to be the “Place of Honor,” aboard a vessel. " Although the law may not allow it, Yachts in US waters do fly the Yacht Ensign. Also other countries may have special yacht ensigns (eg http://www.flags.net/UNKG14.htm ) "A Lagoon 55, such as CJ has posted pictures of; I would define as single masted vessel, with single yard (or spreader). For the purposes of this post, I am going to assume the vessel is registered in the United States. This means the Lagoon 55 would be classified as a United States Flagged Vessel. The yard is divided into: a Starboard Yardarm and a Port Yardarm." Atlantis and Kookaburra have two or more set of spreaders. The lower set is generally used for flags but higher placed spreaders are sometimes used. "When the vessel is under way, the Ensign is lowered from the flagstaff and hoisted to the gaff. A gaff is diagonal spar projecting aft from the mast. " Although, I have been able to sail aboard gaff cutters/sloops/yawls/ketch,schooners, 99.99% of yachts are five string bermuda sloops, and most sailors do not know what a gaff is. And the ensign is always flown from the stern flagstaff, and I have had to explain to Gaff boat owners how to rig the ensign on the gaff. "When a vessel is under way, in the Territorial waters of another country, the flag of the host country should be hoisted, as a courtesy, to the starboard yard." Every country has different laws and I would recommend that those laws should be consulted as it could lead to fines. I should point out that some areas, you have to fly two courtesy flags(country and region) by law (Madeira) and other places like Brittainy, where it is highly recommended for safety reasons to fly the Bretton Flag. "A vessel, which is anchored, should display an Anchoring Ball hoisted in the area of the bow. It is a black circular device hoisted near the bow of a vessel, well clear of the foredeck. At night, a single while light replaces it. " Depends where you anchor, if it is on a recognised mooring or in a quiet anchorage a black ball or single white light is not used. Normally if you run aground hoisting the right signal or light is the last thing you want to do. "BTW: a qualified member of the United States Coast Guard, for inspection purposes, may board a United States Flagged Vessel. This boarding may be initiated in United States Territorial Waters or in international waters." Custom Cutters through out the world have huge powers which extend beyond Home waters, and some countries have extend rights over non national boats outside home waters.

  18. My understanding of USA criminal and civil law is that the statue of limitations runs from the last occurrence of the illegal activities. If Trevor's father was to involve somebody else, even by telling them, the limitation time starts afresh, and the illegal act may then become the illegal act of the person told. Thus Trevor's father then has to wait a longer time, and the person told may find themself face prosecution in the criminal or civil courts. Thus it is important that the only people who know are covered under client and lawyer privilege. Assuming that Australia law is similar to English law, if somebody was to be told of an illegal activity, and kept quiet, this would be conspiracy after the fact, and would be a criminal act. In short, if anybody told Trevor what was going on, it would involve Trevor and reveal the the illegal act before time.!
  19. I like the concept. I like the way, there are false trails, and then the final revealed, the eight year old. 'a short story with a beautiful twist.'
  20. Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder. I love your story. The first sentence sets the scene. It is build on with the first part, the parting. I could feel myself in there. The last part, re union for the moment, I thought was a perfect ending. However, as a mild dyslexic, I f****** hate Courier Font, just a bit less I hate narrow justified columns. As it was it was unreadable. I had to copy it and display it as times roman, wide column in Word. If you made a deliberate decision to do it in new courier, narrow justified column, my apologies. Otherwise I think it would look better in times roman or arial, standard width(40 to 50 characters wide) justified column

    It Was a Holy Day

Through the years, I always expect a cliff hanger, deliberate or accidental from you. I though It was a Monday was a self contained story. I think it was brilliant how you continued the overall scheme. The unspoken part of Puck was an excellent device. The treatment of Uncle Prude, in the temple was so realistic. The way the two cousins, went on the town, is unfortunately, very life like. Now for an admission, my family is the richest family in South Wales, it is also the biggest, so per individual, we have 100 pounds each. I do not know what relationship I have with the vast majority of relatives. The many names and the relations are just like my family, uncles, cousins, or nephews depending on how old, only my mother (priests) knows exactly. To me the slight confusion or names etc was realistic but I can see how it could cause problems in people from smaller families. A suggestion that a device in having similar names for siblings and father and sons and /or two names John-Paul, John-David. Things I particularly liked were the flow, the hint of comedy, in the Amberly scenes, some hints like the old priest in the temple. The elephant in the room, what was Puck working on? I got the impression of sex taking place but there was no direct sex But most of all how you have create a demand for more, and have a cliff hanger which will last for three months. Red Rating OVERALL: 9/10 Setting: 9/10-I do not think any more would detract from the flow Characters: 9/10- you only used half of them but the hint that you you use them in the future is there and it adds suspense to this story Plot: 8/10- because I think there is more behind the story plot than is evident to my weak eyes. Grammar: 0/10 Do not do grammar or spelling. Readability10/10 There are many strong stories of yours that I will not re-read again because of fear, but this one will be re read again and again.
  22. This little ditty, is definitely not the usual output from C James. It can be read on two levels, fun and serious. Read it, and I bet you do not get the solution until the last Paragraph. After the fun, run it again, there is in my humble opinion another message.
  23. In chapter 68 GETAWAYS of Circumnavigation Officers Fowler and Grundig in Officalise. Below is a real life example. Do you have an example From http://londonreconnections.blogspot.com/2011/02/status-of-underground-upgrades.html A full transcript of the exchange is provided below for the sake of completeness, but those who would prefer a short version can skip straight to the summary below it. Richard:(city councilman) The Mayor himself spoke at Mansion House - what two or three weeks ago? - about the potential for driverless trains, so tell us, Mike, can I ask you to say, from your position - what is the scope for the driverless train and indeed TfL obviously must be supportive of the research of this for the Mayor, as the Mayor has said it as the Chairman of TfL. Can you give us your view on the scope for driverless trains? Mike:(Head of Underground) I think, Chair, if I may, that the reality is that all the new trains we're currently procuring and which are arriving in London for the Victoria Line and on the Subsurface Lines do have train cabs where a driver would live. So my absolute focus is to ensure delivery and operability of those trains in the best way possible and aligned with the new signalling systems. Clearly if you look in the wider part of my domain now and look at DLR and other parts of the system there are examples where different solutions have been proposed and indeed have operated... Richard: In Many parts of the world. Mike: ...And in many parts of the world. I think where I come from in this is put very simply - I think that the role and confidence that comes in having a properly trained and fully fledged member of staff on our trains throughout the underground network - the confidence it brings to passengers, the ability to keep things moving if things might get delayed, dealing with passenger issues and safety issues - is really important. So I think any debate on this going forward as to what we might do, hypothetically, and in a future train procurement process has to have that very much in the centre of our thinking and I will do so. Or to summarise: Richard: Is it possible to have driverless trains on the Underground? Mike: No.
  24. This illustrates best, the adage, Know your enemy. Somalia was formed out of British Somaliland in the north west, Puntland in the north east, and centraland south Somalia. In 1990 and 1991,there was a general revolt in the south and central Somalia against the ?corrupt?government. This resulted in chaos with local warlords causing western intervention. A lot of USA troops invaded, but only caused more chaos and the world discovered how powerful Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) are in destroying western armies. At this time,Somaliland in the north west broke away from the rest of Somalia and has been a relative stable independant country but not in name. This remains true today. The rest of Somalia, and particular Puntland had very weak government. This resulted in the overfishing of Somalia waters by foreign vessels. In 2000 the southand part of central Somalia was taken over but the strict muslin organisation, which provided good government and law. This brought calm to the south but not Puntland and some parts ofcentral Somalia. In 2005 Ethiopia(Christian) and heredity enemy, with the backing of USA invaded. Currently they only hold part of the capital, leaving the country side in the muslin organisation hands. The net effect that we are interested in, is that there is no overall control of the non-Somaliland Somalia and in particular Puntland. Fisherman in Puntland, who could not fish, started to do opportunity piracy in 2005/2006. Since there are only 5 or 6 ports in Somalia, and only one in Puntland( I believe this is only suitable for less than 150long less than 10 feet deep vessels)(small trawlers), the pirates operate off open beaches. There is about 800 milesof beaches involved. The so called port of Eyl(centre of Piracy) is a open beach, whose only advantage is a single road and 100 shacks. The initial piracy involved the use of open 20 to 30 foot glass fibre with big outboards whichcould do 25 knots. These would go out inpairs or threes and go alongside ships going at less than 18 knots, and climb aboard. For longer ventures, there was probably a third or fourth boat which was bigger and carried the fuel but never took part in actual piracy. The profit came from ships (2million + dollars per), and yachts were only involved when ships were not available. In 2008/2009 theproblem became so big that Western countries got involved. They introduced defined traffic lanes, unescortedconvoys and strict tracking of ships, and thus easier tracking of SuspectVessels. This was enforced by western navy ships, and helicopters. In additionships are now defended by electric military style barbed(razor) wire, water canon and other non-lethal? devices In the 1million square miles involved This was successful in that Piracy in the limited area of the traffic lanes(10000sq.Miles) piracy was reduced drastically. However, the piracy area has been extended to 3million square miles. Attempts have been made with 40 miles of the India Coast and as far as the south of Madagascar. Piracy is now organised by businessmen who remain ashore and recruit young unskilled men who are high on KHAT. Khat is a mild drug which enables man to operate will no food and no sleep, but leaves a highly nervous unstable person. These are now sent out in two 20 foot openboats to high jack a oceangoing trawler. This is then used as a mother ship with the two skiffs loaded abroad. This then goes beyond the patrolled traffic lanes, and tries to find a target. If a target is not found there is desperation, and yachts are taken, but yachts are not prime target. It should be pointed out that there is high failure rate and a high proportion of skiffs do not return due to lack of fuel. So what is the solution? Well the first, is to ban all yachts north of a line from tip of India to south point of Madagascar, although this would ban trips to Seychelles, Maldives and other Islands in the Indian Ocean. Other than that, I can only tell you what will not work? Invade Somalia, this has been tried before twice. It would involve a lot of invading army causalities, as your enemy would be drug induced devil may care people. You would also have to control 800 by 300 miles of country(Puntland) for a long time. A pirate group is about 20, that is easy to hide. Flood the sea with war ships, no that 3 million divided 2500(indivual ship patrol area) Flood the Somalia coastwith ships, 40 ships required for 800miles. Blast the ports tohell, what ports? Remember, your target is at most 50 piracy groups of 20 people each, and probably much less. Also they can easily be replaced Useful links Horn of africa eu navy especial best practice issue 3 Live Piracy map bbc article
