I can appreciate that. In western barding the Thalian Mask of Comedy and the Melpomenean Mask of Tragedy both hang together on the wall thanks to our Greek forefathers. They well knew the place for both kinds of story to be told, though they always did so with a message to be gained from either the comedy or the tragedy. I endeavor to wear both masks in my writings, hopefully. Alas, I may give you maybe one of the 1% that do end in tragedy. I promise to make it worth your while though. Sometimes the tragic can uncover a truth so fantastic that it can only lead to lasting and meanigful joy in the long run. I have found that in life that the closing of one door often leads to the opening of another. Tragedy closes and opens. If it didn't, there would be no hope at all. I refuse to write hopeless stories. There is always hope! Always!

There is something to be said about 'slice of life' story styles. They can create relatable characters that a reader can identify with. Having them work through their problems and accept what can be done and what can't be done can be comforting if, in the end, there is some kind of resolution. This may be a bias in American tastes as Americans tend to be optomistic and want to see the adventurous soul triumph over adversity. Other cultures don't necessarily share this taste. Many French stories, like The Stranger by Camus, try to shine a light on things left in the dark. These stories are somewhat educational because they emphasize what socio philosophers call 'anomie' or the state of meaninglessness in anything we do. It's almost considered vain-glorious to think that everyone can always overcome the world's brokeness by hard work and courage. Things just are as they are and will always be that way. Other European sensibilites seem to follow this line. Scandanavian film, for instance, encourages a 'best leave it like it is' motto. So the films basically become voyaristic insights into other people's lives. An effort to find commonality among all people so that we don't feel alone in any of our experiences. We inherit our love of fantastic adventure and epic storytelling from the British where many authors from Shakespeare to Tolkien build these operatic confections of struggle and defeat and sometimes victory after much hardship and some tenderness. I think there may be a place for the epic and the mundane in our storytelling as this is true in real life. Our lies aren't all drab misery, hopefully. We have truimphs and conquests as well as defeats. Life's a rollercoaster of experiences and to reflect that makes for exciting stories that can actually be reality based.

This was the second story I read when first coming here to GA to lurk and to read. I was so enchanted by it that I joined GA shortly after starting to read this. Its sweet interations and character driven story line inspired the idea for a story that I had and began writing once I finished Pour Me Another. That story is Snowflake: A Love Story. I consider Snowflake Pour Me Another's literary child and KC its Grand-Author. It was such a good read that I was sad to see it end. Thank you KC for writing this and for inspiring so many of us to write grounded, character driven romances.
