The sort of thing described in this chapter can be seen as an amalgam of various stories published about college campuses over the years. Some universities are better than others at engendering healthy, supportive community life. But scenes like these do happen, and the few that get reported generally inspire incredulity until the facts come out.

    Chapter 6

What kind of a church is this? Come on, somebody at that church must realize what's happening, no? That it isn't right? This is why God invented lawyers...

    Chapter 5

God, Ezra has to go through that every Friday? Agree with DrP - Dad is a twisted sadist. Cutting off oxygen supply does not bring anyone closer to god; it brings nobody any closer to anything but death. Poor Ezra doesn't really understand anything about real love, good love - how could his father have taught him?

    Chapter 4

The father appears normal, but is surely insane. This is chilling, and no wonder poor Ezra is in such state. He never will know which way to move, even when staying still is dangerous, too.

    Chapter 3

Such an incredibly sad, heartbreaking tale. And a tough chapter, in that Joshua has to see it unfold and not know what to do or say...

He isn't easy to like, is he? You raise the essential question - does anyone, even a predator like the one in this story - deserve such treatment? If we have honest answers, how hard will it be for us to live by them? I am glad you find this a compelling tale. I hope you will continue to find it so. Many, many thanks for your response and thoughts.

You make a number of perceptive observations. Is this divine retribution, or a case of terrible probability? The predator will surely never be the same person again after this night; he will have a memory of it, and of the terrible pain. We have seen the deep darkness both in his current reality and as it existed in his own mind. What the morning holds will be another matter. As for some of the other ideas you raise, I can only ask you for more time and patience to see how the story unfolds. Many thanks for sticking with this story so far.

And yet most mid and large size universities have such dark sides; some places are merely darker than others. You are absolutely right in that our predator must be content for the small mercies shown to him.

There was a party in full swing. It was Saturday night, of course there was a party. Unfortunately for him, he was tied up at the moment. Quite literally. Ordinarily, beer flowed, weed glowed, and in the shadowed corners of the suite, certain other very lucrative transactions were accomplished more discreetly. Normally, he was the one in charge, but not this time. He'd been hosting parties like this for years, almost since he'd arrived at the university. He'd been adept at bringing people in,

These first few chapters have been very hard - I acknowledge that. The predator has plenty of karma, it seems. Hang a on a for a few chapters, though, if you can. Not surprising you fell some conflict about Ted. You aren't alone. Thanks for the response and comments!

    Fault

To feel unable to help, unable to be wise enough, is to feel useless against a malaise that crowds around oneself. It can suffocate, making anything you do so very difficult. You express that vividly here. If a hug would help, you may have one - many - from me.
  12. Zane seriously messed up. You write the buildup of tension and stress so accurately, so persistently, that the blowup seemed inevitable. Clint must be hurting terribly. And now Zane is done, and is he any better for having released his pent up rage? It appears he may have a very long and unhappy time figuring out the answer to that question. Great chapter!

    Chapter 2

Oh, you paint the growing affection and love - physical and a emotional - between David and Jae so very well. It is understated in many ways, as a man turned farmer might have it. And that David and Jae have come to love each other is one of the great gifts of both their lives, you show that too. But the foreboding of the coming band of marauders gives me the chills. Nothing good at all can come from that. Looking for chapter 3 next!

Or perhaps the perfect clothes for the ones we love...I am glad you liked this. Many thanks!

I am so very happy that this poem appealed to you, Emi. The morning sunshine you speak of came to me only later as I was editing the first draft; the first attempt was far clunkier. Many thanks for your thoughts!

Thank you so very much for your kind encouragement. The images simply would not let me alone, and I fussed a rather long time until I was moderately satisfied.

I am glad you liked this; it is a personal favorite. The last line got under my skin, and would not let me go.

As I said in the previous comment, the last two lines inspired the beginning. I am glad you liked the first line, as the Jay's blue was such a vivid and arresting image when it first arrived. The shift in metre was a real change of pace, and it was fun to try. Thank you for your very kind and generous words...

Thank you Gary! How odd that the last two lines were the ones that inspired everything else...

    Love On Hold

You express such sadness and determination, too. It is a heartbreaking poem. I offer you hugs, such as they are, and hope.
  22. Suitability The proper dress for jays is blue, or so the sages tell; each feather to its bird is true, each flower to its dell; and dappled dawnlight favors you as music suits the bell. The trees that clothe the mountainside were tailored green for June, while rain that swells the ocean tide must answer to its moon; so joy your countenance must guide, as sunshine answers noon. The dance in early morning bright was fashioned for your eyes, and afternoon's embraces tight all heaven may com
  23. Zane in so many ways chooses a real life, real growth, by letting himself trust Clint. It's not just trusting with the choice of restaurant, or with his sanctuary, but also trusting Clint with himself without braces or canes, himself as he is with the albatross of his hurting hateful father and everything else. This is an incredible gift of himself to Clint, and I surely hope Clint can recognize this. He appears to, at least. Many thanks for this really lovely chapter.
  24. Lots of clues and data for figuring out the Reznick advantage. Once Kellar and Tobyn discover it, perhaps they can counteract it without anyone else being in danger or hurt. I so enjoyed seeing Tobyn and Kellar taking care of each other, being real foundations for one another. You are weaving quite a world and a tale, and I cannot wait to see the next chapter.
