How lucky Jae was to see what he saw; how lucky he was to escape with his life. He and Dave have a chance to make their lives as they wish, and I admire their desire to take a stand. You write this so well, it seems so real. This is a real nail-biter, and I'm running out of fingers! Thanks for writing this story!

Wagner as an atmosphericist could be unmatched. Surely we have a debt to Wagner for pointing the way to stage and film music. Of course, there were some justified critics. It might have been Rossini who said rather tartly that Wagner had some wonderful moments, but some awful half-hours.

You deftly draw a set of characters with which to draw us into Kip's story. Shay and Matti appear to be amiable, but Jon seems to be a jealous ass. How did AJ wind up with him? This story looks like it might be a fascinating read. You have made Kip to be a very appealing protagonist. Many thanks for chapter one.

Our predator is not a nice person. But is he redeemable? The last man to rape the predator doesn't give us much information about himself, or what he might know about the predator. 'Sick' has many meanings, I fear. But you're right in that the stranger pretty much has the last word on the previous four chapters. Many thanks for hanging on.

I fear it is terribly gut wrenching early on. The redheaded roommate certainly knows the predator well. I wish I could comment on your speculations, but that would hardly be fair, now would it? I thank you for some thought provoking comments, and for reading this difficult tale.

The self loathing in both of these poems sounds like whine of a buzz saw in hardwood. So loud, so clear. They ring with hurt and the sorrow and hopelessness. They are devastatingly effective. I want to say I get this, share this, but we all have our own private hells we carry around with us. I offer you a deep hug and hope for clearer, better sight for both of us. -
Such a profoundly moving poem. To be able to seize oneself and see past the pain to peace. You wrote a powerful story in these stanzas, far more powerful than prose. And I hope the peace is there for you, always.

How horrible. Luke is as despicable as they come; both crazed and pathologically criminal. The father is religiously demented. Poor Ezra needs saving now. Luke and Paul need to be caged before Ezra is killed. But is Ezra ever going to be capable of trust and love? Or will he be permanently damaged?

So Tom's dad was in prison? And Don and Chuck appear to be a very happy pair together. You paint Chuck particularly well, and you let us see him in a very favorable light. So many back-touches here in this chapter - back to David and Twoey, back to Ginny, back to Eric the domineering bastard, and so on. How will Chuck move forward now?

I very much enjoyed this chapter, as I have so many of your previous ones. But the tension between CJ and Owen is surely increasing. The chapter title comment about Owen having a hungry heart is confirmation that CJ keeping an emotional distance from Owen. CJ says he is not ready for more, and that is to be respected. Can Owen respect that, too?

It is very hard to feel sympathy for much of anyone in this tale, except for the broken ones left behind. You ask a long line of questions about connections, and as I said to Defiance, I have no satisfactory answer I can give you. Yet. I hope that although you find it a dark tale, it may be rewarding to read to its conclusion. Many, many thanks for your comments and response!

Thank you Tim, for your words of encouragement. To soften or sugarcoat this would be a disservice to those whose pain in real life mirrors this chapter. But it was hard to write, and I dithered a long time about posting this. Again, my thanks for reading and for your support.

The darkness is pretty heavy in this chapter, very hard to see through, except for what happens right in front of the reader's eye. The predator has hurt others without much care - he has heart that appears to be made of stone, or at least it appears so. Under what circumstances does stone crack? Your questions about Ted, or others who fell prey to our predator, are well taken. I regret, I have no answer just now. But I thank you for peppering us all with perceptive thoughts, and for reading so far into this tale.

Chapter Five will have a few answers for such minds. But it seems altogether likely that the predator-turned-prey will come out of this experience changed, as anyone would. You have certainly got it right - there are many, many loose ends, and not all of them can be tied up.

Dear Gary, I hate to have turned your gut inside out with this very difficult tale. It is immensely hard to look at the predator with sympathy, but his situation seems to compel us to that. He has to live with his thoughts, live with his memories, and with himself. Don't commend me just yet, but I thank you for staying with the story thus far. And perhaps your gut will be able to rest more easily next week.
