  1. In Arizona, Trudy appears to have more of the upper hand and an independent existence. She golfs and had her own set of friends. Even in Eagle Lake, she’s got her own network. When she married Heinrich Senior, Trudy already had her own family. Combining households gave both adults a rosier financial outlook. However, Heinrich certainly seems to have brought a lot of baggage into the marriage, as you say. Thanks very much for your thoughts!
  2. I’m glad you could feel the cool of the woods and enjoy what Rick felt and Gus heard. The whole group appeared to have a wonderful time. Marta has much more interest how things work than in performance. I agree that Zoltan and Magda would take an exceedingly dim view of her choosing to work as a plumber. At least, until they need a new furnace or water heater. Thanks so much for reading!

The very idea of a canoe on a classic Mercedes is so outre as to be amusing, though I agree it cannot be taken seriously. It just shows how good Rick and Gus are together that they can banter like that. Then again, there’s this... https://www.pinterest.dk/pin/312015080407919460/?amp_client_id=5UPxYj3SVOELNMeqsEYeJ1g_nD7ILl79wbhXEcsoAtcgHb8VLnm3qM0a2KsYpPXR&mweb_unauth_id=17225255&amp_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.dk%2Famp%2Fmikehanzen%2Fcanoe-wheels%2F

Caroline is plain and down to earth. She’s also very fond of Rick. Two good reasons to like her! I hadn’t made that Big Bang Theory connection with Rita, but it fits. Watch out for flying candy. Thanks again for your comments!

    Dissonance

Thanks for reading and responding. I’m glad you got me on that detail. In my state, we got state history several times, 4th, 7th and 11th grades. Of course, I drew on my own experience. I figured there would be a middle school local history unit. Well, now I’ll have to rethink that bit of dialogue.
  6. I love this comment! No, Wally’s heart isn’t stony or cold anymore. It’s changing. And Ellie is a fun character to write. Thanks a million.

    Duetti

Rick just got a vision of how it could be... or might have been. I like that you see the encounter as hopeful.

    Die Forelle

In that brief time, Gus hooked Rick more thoroughly than any fish. Thanks for reading!

    More is coming on that.

Rita could sell anything, to anyone. Give her credit, she’s a very good at sales.

Heinrich Senior still owns the business; his son Rick does the work in the expectation that he’ll inherit one day. He hasn’t left because if he did, he’d walk away with very little, and have to start over - not at all an easy thing to do. Modernization hasn’t crossed the old man’s mind, as he hates to spend a penny. Rick has campaigned for a new van for years to no avail.

    Isolde

Rita’s plans will come out sooner or later. I loved your theory of how the chicken got her name. It’s actually meant to be from an opera, but Rick doesn’t know that. At least the bird listened well. Thanks for your thoughts,

If demonstrating trustworthiness is a gauge, Wally passed the test this time. It may be that he needs more such trials until he earns that trust fully. He felt the ache of what he missed by seeing Michael and Trey. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Heinrich Senior is like a dose of vinegar. His son bears it because of the distance and because, well, the old man is family. He’s thought about getting out, but doesn’t: old ties keep him there. I appreciate your comments.

    Pensato

Gossip and conversation around town will tell Rita many things, including details about Rick. For a person in real estate, information gleaned through such interactions can be invaluable. She may have good use for what she learns. Thanks for your thoughts and for reading!

    La Calunna

Alas, Willy did not wind up in a hovel. He discarded Rick, and moved on, passing like a summer thunderstorm. But the effects on Rick have been far more long lasting, like flood damage or the altered course of a stream. Thanks so much for your comments!

    La Calunna

Please accept my apologies for being so late in replying to this comment. Heinrich Senior bears a heavy burden of responsibility for Rick’s lousy self image. Over and over, he’s dwelt on his son’s imperfections rather than on what is good in him. Rick has friends, as he’s a nice guy by nature, but he has a hard time believing enough that their friendship is enduring. Thanks so much for continuing to read!
  18. Wally is thinking about people other than himself, and trying to fit his experience into some kind of perspective. Yes, that sounds a lot like progress! Thanks for reading!

    Capriccio

You’re quite right. Rick is not thinking clearly, or he would have followed that very important safety rule you mention. But then, his brain is not working in an ordered way, not at the moment. Thanks again for reading!

    Capriccio

Rick might have liked that idea of piano lessons, if only he could get up the courage to speak to the piano teacher with the lovely smile. I’m thankful you continue to read, and I beg you to accept my apology for missing this comment so long ago.

    Commendatore

Rick has felt trapped by both past and present realities. He doesn’t feel he can leave Eagle Lake, yet he’s uncertain if his place there. His trauma left him with deep scars that have yet to heal. Thanks very much for reading!

    Idee Fixe

I wonder if people in Eagle Lake call her that behind her back. It didn’t occur to me, but it sounds too good. Thanks for reading!

    Contrapunto

Both Gus and Rick have lived under other people’s thumbs. Rick has had much less room to maneuver, yet Gus chafes too. The storm clouds are gathering, but Rick is having trouble figuring out what is on the breeze. Thanks very much for reading and for your comments!

    Apassionata

You’re very kind. I am glad the dialogue and descriptions could bring scenes to life for you. This was a chapter I enjoyed writing.

    Near Miss

Wally chose the shore, where there’s life and people. He may not yet know precisely how to live, but at least he’s trying to recover some humanity. Perhaps redemption is possible after all.
