    Dissonance

It's a pity Irene has her nose out of joint about something. Walter's news is something she would have broadcast across town in a matter of an hour or so. Rita's big project would mean immense change for everyone in Eagle Lake, and a great deal of money for those connected to it. I'm not sure what part of their anatomies the School Board are thinking with. As for Jerry and his questions, I doubt he will allow them to go unanswered for very long. Many thanks for reading!
  2. Rick winced as he backed the company van into a slot in Jahnke’s lot. Without its muffler, the old beast had roared along the quiet morning streets of Eagle Lake. Every time he stepped on the gas, he’d cringed. It was a relief to shut the engine off. Yet even with the racket and his mounting embarrassment, Rick wore a smile. He sat behind the wheel, letting his ears readjust. He’d paddled over to Cedarcrest the previous night. At the end of the dock, he and Gus watched the stars, kissed,

    Chapter 42

Finally, some peace for people we’ve come to love. Perhaps Jimmy’s bite is more healing than anything; maybe there is hope when they wake in the morning. They’re going to need it.
  4. Thank you.
  5. Thanks for reading Andy’s journal a second and third time through. I’d be shocked at anyone showing commercial interest in his story, though it’s sometimes fun to think about who could be cast in various roles. Thanks again.
  6. Thank you for two delightful limericks. They made me smile.
  7. I enjoyed this chapter. Ritch goes on adventures and enjoys experiences I can only dream of. Thank you for bringing them to life, and allowing your readers to participate too. I was glad to see Joel return - as Ritch's roommate! And the conversation with Miranda was especially well done. Still, I think the best part was seeing the snapshots of Ritch during his two weeks' leave. Like @dughlas, I can imagine Ritch at the dig with his aunt, and making new friends.

You're very kind in your comments. I'm so glad you are reading Rick's story. The rumors have been more or less continuous since the previous winter. No wonder Rick is tired of them. Instead of having a long, long work day, he'd much rather have spent the day with Gus, or at least dreaming about the man. That probably made the day seem even longer than it already was. Small wonder that Rick leapt at the chance to do some, erm, stargazing on the Cedarcrest dock. As for Rita, she has been blissfully absent from Rick's life for the past few days and chapters. However, Eagle Lake is a small town, so she is likely to turn up again sooner or later. Thanks again!

Thank you for taking me on your walk today.

    Party

I am too. They needed to talk to one another. Thanks for reading this autumn story.

    Picnic

To discover more about David, Skinnydragon’s Eighteen Weeks of Twoey will be a great read. Where they went for lunch is a real place; I’ve picnicked there myself.

    Parking

This story began as a collaboration with Skinnydragon, a lovely writer who died far too soon. We thought it might be fun to let our characters interact. Alas, Skinny passed before this chapter was finished. I hope this snapshot lets you see Andy having grown some and Skinny’s characters enjoying getting to know new friends.

After a weekend in which everything turned out all right (despite events that could have ruined things), the Monday after just has more jarring and puzzling occurrences. Caroline Lee's guessing Rick's long-held secret came as a great surprise to him. How reassuring she was in telling him that she knew. Rick might have chosen to investigate matters further, but Gus gave him something far better to do. These things can be looked at later... after stargazing... and other things. Thank you for reading!
  14. I can't agree more with the sentiment that weinerdog expressed, @chris191070: you're definitely a kick-ass reader. As for Andy and Zander's senior year, I feel certain that it was a triumph. There are some scenes recorded about their last fall (Fall Observation) and about what happened to Uncle Ray and about their departure for college (Summer's End). Someday, I hope to find time to write about Reed, too. In the meantime, thank you very much for reading and commenting on Andy's journal. It is a joy to know other people find this story compelling.
  15. Reed did the right thing to climb the hill and get out of Andersonville. He's never going back, not if Andy and Zander have anything to say about it. Maybe someday, I will be able to write a little about Reed's life. However, mostly it's good to know Andy and Zander are happy together, as they were meant to be. Thank you for taking the time to read all of Andy's journal, and for walking with him through every step.
  16. That you return again and again makes me very glad. I have always hoped this story would be one of those that might last. Andy and Zander still live in my heart and mind; perhaps they will live in yours, too. Many thanks.

    Chapter 66 Us

I hoped that the love they feel and express for one another - that which makes Zander and Andy Us - would come through in this chapter. Your comment tells me that it does, and so I am smiling.
  18. Andy and Zander are made one and whole; they are so good for each other. The farm seemed like the right place for them to honeymoon; a place where they could be apart and where Andy would feel at home. I can imagine that the party and conversation in Blackburn went on long into the night. That must have been fun, too. Thank you for reading and joining Andy and Zander on their onward journey.
  19. As Andy said, he felt ten thousand pounds lighter after hearing he was no relation to Gunnar or Ray. Now Andy and Zander can emerge to become the men they were meant to be.
  20. Delia Walker must have come quite a ways to see her long-lost grandson. That says a lot about the power of love. You're right that she must feel great elation at finding him alive.
  21. A day of slowly growing pressure and tension, and then, to cap it all, a strange woman asking to see him. Poor Kaz, good friend that he is, must be wondering what's going on. Andy was getting set to tell Phyllis Chandler off, only to be greeted by someone wholly unexpected. Thanks for your kind thoughts and for reading.
  22. Andy has greater reason to be nervous: he's never been in anything like this position before. At least Zander has been to at least one of these Meet-The-Family things for his sister Carol. Once the others saw how happy Andy and Zander are together, it was a foregone conclusion that they'd approve, at least to my mind.
  23. Andy had a whole pile of reasons to be nervous. I think that he may have felt some relief that the Meet The Family dinner went off okay. I imagine that it must have felt at least as odd to Monica and Garrett as it did for Zander and Andy. Frank is just getting to know Andy, so it remains to be seen how big brother will welcome his new brother-in-law to the family. What Andy knows for sure is that Garrett and Monica love him, and accept him. Zander's siblings are sure to agree.

You're absolutely right - both men have been under someone else's thumb to one degree or another for some time. They haven't come out and said so, but at some level, both Rick and Gus must recognize this. I'm very glad you liked that line about golden memories from a gray day. Whatever else occurs in Rick's life, he will never forget that weekend he and Gus chased chickens, capsized a boat, and made love. Thank you so very much for reading, and for your insights.

🙂 Stargazing with Gus is the best thing Rick can do. If the clouds ever lift around here, I might go out, too.
