  1. Going back to school give Andy camouflage, but he still has much to figure out - especially how to eat and remain invisible. Thanks for reading and for commenting.
  2. Stefan, who became Eric, is now Andy. How long he'll stay in this town is anyone's guess. Eustace had him for much of the summer, and that was the greatest blessing he'd had in forever. This town might turn out to be dangerous. Given his life in Carlsberg, it would be surprising if Andy didn't wait to be told what to do, or to try and meet expectations.

    Plain Luck

To the Amish kid, Eric must have been something a little strange, perhaps enough out of the ordinary to spice up the day. The episode must have made Eric's heart race, however. He feels hunted several times over. Thanks again for reading!

    August Escape

Ambrose was way too persistent. Eric was lucky to get out when he did, otherwise he was going to wind up in exactly the wrong place. As you say, he's at least fortunate to have more money in his pocket than when he started at the farm.
  5. No, he's not going to give up any day soon. Eric has clearly piqued his interest, and he wants to know more. And more. And more.

    Quiet Days

@chris191070: Toby seems okay with Eric. He's just utterly unaware of Eric's history, but then again, why should he know? Eric is unlikely to open up - that would be would be very risky.

    Fireworks

Eric didn't run. He went 'home' to the barn and to Eustace's place. It says a lot that he feels safe from the world there. I keep wondering what Eustace might have done had he known the truth. It's a pity he put it all down to being an 'Anderson.' Thanks a million for reading and commenting!

    Interrogation

The Andersons are a clan. They don't appear to be very endearing on first blush. And you're right. Ambrose may require a lot of care. Thanks for reading thus far into the story.
  9. Eric and Eustace are each trying to figure the other out. Eric can't believe in the kindness of the old man. Eustace has a hard time believing that this Anderson kid is as guileless and hardworking as he appears. But Eustace seems to be giving him the benefit of the doubt.
  10. Eustace asks plenty of questions, doesn't he? At the same time, he does something that few people have done with Eric: they have confidence and trust in the boy. You're right, too - praise is something that might, with repetition, help Eric. Thanks for reading so far into his story.

    Work

This is a moment of unalloyed good in his life. Eric has had so few of these.

    A Short Ride

Life on the road has honed Eric's instincts for survival. His long-nurtured skills at deflection and half-truth paid off here.

    Roger

The poor boy allowed himself to trust for a moment. That was his error. You're right, though, he did get to eat.

    Splash

With a belly full of berries and some time to simply play, Eric has had as good a day as he has had in a long while. He'll remember it.

    Rescue

He is indeed a really good person. However good he may be, his first instinct is to stay under cover and out of sight as much as possible. Under no circumstances would he want to be handed over to go back to Uncle Ray, or to jail.
  16. Colin is yet another self-interested guy who wants what he wants - and the heck with anyone else. His sister was merely inconvenient. At least Stefan had some real pleasure in her company.

    Wrong Help

Stefan cannot trust this man Ozzie. He has little strength for trust. The first person he relies on is himself. The longer he manages to stay free, the stronger that reliance and self-trust becomes.
  18. Stefan has managed to get out of a horrible situation, but cannot find a way to land on his feet. All he can think of to do is keep moving. His experiences and ill fortune must color his observations. I also imagined an alternate plotline in which he revealed himself to the party goers at the lake. I couldn't see it going anywhere good, however, and it remained a stillborn idea. Thanks again for reading.

    Houghton

Houghton seems like a place Stefan might stay in for a bit. His luck, such as it is, held so far.

    Church

Stefan is running but he was under cover and was able to rest for a day. He may not really know what to do with his good dream; he has so few. Thanks again for reading.

    Eric

For once, a tiny bit of luck. Stefan got a meal, a bit of praise, and a new name. The clouds are still gathered and grey over his head, but at least he is not getting pelted with a storm of ill fortune.

    Walk Away

Stefan feels he has no alternative but to run. The real question is where to go? He knows very little of the town he lives in, and nothing beyond that. Thanks for hanging on with him.
  23. He needs all those things, plus a person who will actually see him and his injuries. His track record for such luck isn't good.

    Catastrophe

What's so hard is that, while Stefan's story is fiction, there are news reports of kids who really do undergo abuse like this. Like him, they feel entirely alone in their misery. His journal is his only means of escape. I'm grateful you've hung on so far through Stefan's darkness.
  25. Stefan’s father harbors such sustained hatred toward his son. Across this country, there are too many such angry men. Thanks for reading.
