  1. Andy was sorely tempted to run away, but stayed. He has dealt with pain and harshness for a long time. Perhaps he feels strong enough to deal with this disappointment too. As you say, he has a group of friends, and Kaz as an enthusiastic running partner. Perhaps he'll be in shape to run the next time.
  2. You will have a chance later to judge whether Andy made a mistake or not. I'm glad there was something you wondered about when you finished the chapter.
  3. Andy no longer feels quite so much like a target. Zander has found a non-threatening way to be near the boy who bewitches him. The world around Andy has indeed shifted. Thanks for your many comments!
  4. Snowflakes swirl out of the predawn dark, landing on my unmasked, upturned face; do they laugh at the fast approaching equinox, jostling for position while they fall, or is it just the wind I’m hearing? Three black crows sail against the north wind, darker than the clouds framing their flight, voiceless in the roaring chorus of the fir trees whose tops wave with religious fervor when chill Pentecost comes before snow.

    Epilogue

A lovely, happy ending. I’m delighted you made six friends from the original three. Wonderfully done.
  6. You are most kind. What makes me happy is that you read Andy’s journal through to its end. Andy and the many kids who suffer abuse deserve the joy he finally found. You can find some short pieces in which Andy and Zander appear on GA; they include the word “observation” in their titles. Again, thank you for your comments and encouraging words.
  7. Andy is beginning to trust, just a little bit. Yes, now we know why Zander has been shy, and may remain so. Andy is unlikely to initiate any conversation, as it would be far too dangerous. And yet, he must yearn for it, too. Thanks for continuing to read, and for your comments.
  8. Andy has banished quite a few ghosts since walking away from Carlsberg - though he remembers his father and the pain the man inflicted, he also has learned to attempt to do things on his own that he might never have chanced under the tyrannical rule of his dad. Eustace has something to do with that, perhaps. That math class is just one more step away from Carlsberg and closer to who he might be. And Terry is truly persistent. She is a force of nature.
  9. It's exactly when things start going well that Andy runs into trouble. You're right in that he really has to remain vigilant to danger and exposure. Thanks for your comments!
  10. Going back to school give Andy camouflage, but he still has much to figure out - especially how to eat and remain invisible. Thanks for reading and for commenting.
  11. Stefan, who became Eric, is now Andy. How long he'll stay in this town is anyone's guess. Eustace had him for much of the summer, and that was the greatest blessing he'd had in forever. This town might turn out to be dangerous. Given his life in Carlsberg, it would be surprising if Andy didn't wait to be told what to do, or to try and meet expectations.

    Plain Luck

To the Amish kid, Eric must have been something a little strange, perhaps enough out of the ordinary to spice up the day. The episode must have made Eric's heart race, however. He feels hunted several times over. Thanks again for reading!

    August Escape

Ambrose was way too persistent. Eric was lucky to get out when he did, otherwise he was going to wind up in exactly the wrong place. As you say, he's at least fortunate to have more money in his pocket than when he started at the farm.
  14. No, he's not going to give up any day soon. Eric has clearly piqued his interest, and he wants to know more. And more. And more.

    Quiet Days

@chris191070: Toby seems okay with Eric. He's just utterly unaware of Eric's history, but then again, why should he know? Eric is unlikely to open up - that would be would be very risky.

    Fireworks

Eric didn't run. He went 'home' to the barn and to Eustace's place. It says a lot that he feels safe from the world there. I keep wondering what Eustace might have done had he known the truth. It's a pity he put it all down to being an 'Anderson.' Thanks a million for reading and commenting!

    Interrogation

The Andersons are a clan. They don't appear to be very endearing on first blush. And you're right. Ambrose may require a lot of care. Thanks for reading thus far into the story.
  18. Eric and Eustace are each trying to figure the other out. Eric can't believe in the kindness of the old man. Eustace has a hard time believing that this Anderson kid is as guileless and hardworking as he appears. But Eustace seems to be giving him the benefit of the doubt.
  19. Eustace asks plenty of questions, doesn't he? At the same time, he does something that few people have done with Eric: they have confidence and trust in the boy. You're right, too - praise is something that might, with repetition, help Eric. Thanks for reading so far into his story.

    Work

This is a moment of unalloyed good in his life. Eric has had so few of these.

    A Short Ride

Life on the road has honed Eric's instincts for survival. His long-nurtured skills at deflection and half-truth paid off here.

    Roger

The poor boy allowed himself to trust for a moment. That was his error. You're right, though, he did get to eat.
  23. Parker Owens

    Splash

With a belly full of berries and some time to simply play, Eric has had as good a day as he has had in a long while. He'll remember it.

    Rescue

He is indeed a really good person. However good he may be, his first instinct is to stay under cover and out of sight as much as possible. Under no circumstances would he want to be handed over to go back to Uncle Ray, or to jail.
  25. Colin is yet another self-interested guy who wants what he wants - and the heck with anyone else. His sister was merely inconvenient. At least Stefan had some real pleasure in her company.
