  1. Blimey, it's been a long since anyone posted in this thread. This story has trended everywhere over the past couple of days and is an excellent example of how something goes viral (in a good way). https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-52303859
  2. You been on a bus lately? 3 passengers and the driver make it pretty easy round my way. The main pinch point is getting on and off but the drivers already have plastic shields and now the holes have been blocked off. I often thanked the drivers before all of this; I make sure I do it every time now.
  3. Shopping for me and two neighbours, I made the mistake on Friday of going to two shops during one trip. I know we British are meant to like queuing but even so... Just as well it was sunny.
  4. OK... mergansers was a completely new word. Or even a completely new species. And your robins aren't our robins. Thank you for allowing me on your walks. I have a feeling such virtual walks will be important over the next few months.

    Taking a Hit

It wasn't just me being mean. The original prompt was to write a story where the main character ended by losing a competition. Blame YeahWrite, not me.

    Taking a Hit

Thanks, Val. Descriptions more than anything else give a sense of place and period.

Hopefully - he's evidently a good jouster, otherwise he wouldn't have reached the final.

There, I obviously had you in mind when I wrote this.

Not much choice - it's either that or the church for someone of his class. Even the merchants hadn't really come into their own yet (12th century or thereabouts). I imagine he'd find some paying work, and hopefully have more luck at the tourney, or indeed in the fight against the Scots.

    Taking a Hit

Ah, well... It's a third longer than the story originally posted. I can manage to hold the illusion of knowing something about this period for a piece this length. Anything much longer and my deficiencies would become woefully apparent.
  12. Helm off, and without his chain-mail mittens, Robert FitzSimon sat on cool grass and chewed morosely on a hunk of bread with a slice of meat for his midday meal. He spat out another lump of gristle before turning to take a gulp of sour red wine to wash the rest down. Then came a sigh – the last few coins had been wasted on the food. Life as a landless knight was precarious. The tourney at Warwick was the latest amongst many such hopes of attracting a wealthy baron on the lookout for men. Vis
  13. Yes, indeed. A great question. I was thanking you for the work / posting the entry, though I imagine, you'll shrug it off.
  14. Thanks, @Carlos Hazday. I found this a fascinating question and it's evident everyone else who answered did too. @Cole Matthews particularly gave me pause for thought. I too write stories without a beginning or an end...

    Comeback

You and everyone else, I do believe.
  16. In which case, could we have a revised description for The Pit? Something like... 'the only place for politics and other contentious issues/topics/discussions (select whichever)' At present it appears to be a place for only political discourse.

They are responses to monthly prompts set by YeahWrite and first appear in my external blog. The word count has to be on the nail.

    Comeback

Thank you! And like some sweet things, these pieces take a lot of work and can be scarfed in a few seconds. The word count is fixed so choices made are really important.

    Yep.

I didn't imagine Jake as wealthy, I have to say. Just dumb.

Maybe he was drunk? High? Still no excuse though...

Bloodied, Jake picked himself up, leaving behind evidence of a damaged nose. What the fuck happened to a sense of humour? Goosing an attractive guy was a compliment. A uniformed figure loomed. “You're under arrest for indecent assault.” Shit. Perhaps it wasn’t.
  23. My feelings exactly, Gary. And just as true. Even more for us authors who don't have your dedicated base of readers. Or for someone in my situation, where I'm posting irregularly to a prompt collection as I write my next magnum opus off-stage.
  24. I share the unease at the number of stories being reduced on the front page as seen on a laptop. But remember, on a mobile view, stories don't feature on the equivalent front page at all. Is the change related to how many people bypass the front page and go straight to Stories? If it's a space issue, I don't need to be told which clubs I'm a member of. In a related matter, the Club Forums now appear as a jumble. I hope that's not their final position. To me, it would make sense to have the Fan Clubs in a section on their own. I know I can select what I want to see, but I prefer to keep a broad view.
  25. For once, I read this straight off. It is fun and enjoyable but I join with the comments asking for more. It felt like the opening chapters of something longer. Thanks, @Andrew Q Gordon
