  2. Looking at my most recent story, Shaken, the general story views appear to have been stuck on 409 for at least 24 hours. The views of Chapter 1 now number 474 and do change. Don't know if the issue only applies to this story or to all. Noticed across all devices, all using Chrome.

    Chapter 1

This made me think... That's more a belief that a guy who's so apparently unattractive, unmasculine, hidden, and generally undeserving of a partner, won't therefore have one. It's a trait found in men and women, and yes, it doesn't make Aaron any more pleasant.

    Chapter 1

The different amounts of cultural baggage depending on whose costume you're 'appropriating' is fascinating and perplexing. Don't worry. Gender matters can be a linguistic minefield. Sometimes I find myself choosing words very carefully, and even then I'm not always sure I've got the right one. A general word to describe Malcolm (although he himself doesn't know it) might be 'non-binary'. That is feeling neither exclusively male or female. (I apologise in turn if I'm explaining something you're already perfectly aware of.)

    Chapter 1

Nobody is, and that's deliberate. He's on a journey, as well as Malcolm. His actions have already generated an interesting range of responses.

    Chapter 1

'cross dressing' is a term that irritates me, though you're right to think Malcolm's not transgender. A woman dressing in clothes apparently meant for a man gets little to no attention. A guy doing the reverse can get labelled as a cross dresser. What about those individuals in the middle of the spectrum between cis and trans? Or those whose gender fluctuates. They might well have both 'sets' of clothing as part of their normal wardrobe. It's a question central to this story,, and isn't one to which I know the answer.

    Chapter 1

All kinds of mixed up feelings, self-deception, and religion. A potent mix which will lead to trouble. Exactly which kind, you'll tell us in due course.

    Chapter 1

I didn't see like that - it's more the attitude displayed by some millennials. They seem to consider anything up for grabs, and a photo is the only way to prove you've seen/sampled/witnessed whatever it is.

    Chapter 1

@lomax61 Thank you for the praise. I'm very pleased you're awaiting the second chapter. I am an unashamed English writer but my American editor ensures I don't stray too far down the path of incomprehensibility. My editor would beg to differ - he was horrified Aaron got his phone ready when he entered Malcolm's home. His incomprehension intensified when Aaron took the photos.

    Chapter 1

This is what I mean - a woman doing that wouldn't get anything like the ribbing he got. A female wearing male / male-inspired clothing gets little comment; the opposite brings out howls of derision or condemnation.

    Chapter 1

It's something I hadn't really considered. Given Aaron's propensity for imposing his own standards on other people, maybe that's the way he sleeps? And I get the idea he's very keen on being clean... clothes etc
  13. I did notice you gave me one of your 'ticks'. Didn't think it would be quite your cup of tea.
  14. Yep. Makes me feel less guilty for producing yet another 5 figure offering (though it's actually comparatively short compared with some other stories offered here).

    Chapter 1

Thanks, Thorn. You're very kind. People's comments are always fascinating.

    Chapter 1

I don't think he's there to be liked. He's on a journey, same as Malcolm is. Where it'll end up, you'll have to wait and see. (As if you don't know already... )

    Chapter 1

Or he could be someone who feels somewhere in the middle, gender-wise. Women can largely get away in public with wearing clothing associated with men; why can't it happen the other way around? That's the main point of the encounter between Aaron and Fran.

    Chapter 1

@droughtquake I'm interested your thoughts turned immediately to transgender as a description for Malcolm. To me, it's not clear where he might be on the broad sweep between cis and trans. And more importantly, he isn't clear either. In fact, he lacks the tools to decide.

    Chapter 1

In a shadowed corner of the dimly-lit function room, Aaron leant against a pillar and watched his co-workers as they gossiped loudly in groups, next to the free bar. Some took advantage of the cheesy 80's playlist to show off their dance moves on the compact central arena. Taking a sip of his sparkling cranberry juice, the young man's lip curled. Even a mid-week night at The Tower would easily produce talent to put that lot in the shade. He might've given a demonstration but for his part-healed
  21. Aaron's task of seeing a drunken co-worker home turns sour in more ways than one.

    The Story

Don't know his stuff, but unless he was into the weird / occult, I imagine the answer's gonna be 'no'.
  23. *wonders what's brought this on...*
  24. @Thorn Wilde and @Palantir Thanks, both!
  25. ๐ŸŽˆHappy birthday for tomorrow, @aditus!๐ŸŽˆ
