In case it's been a while since you were last at Hares and Hyenas, I thought I should mention that they moved about a year or two ago. They moved from Prahan to Fitzroy. I haven't been to their new store (the old one was walking distance from the office where I work).

I think it all gets down to what you expect to get out of the shows. From the discussion above, it looks like that people are basing their decision on what they like now in their life. Since the American cartoon industry is aimed mainly at kids (much more money in them than there is in adults -- trust me, I'm a parent and I know ), adults don't find them as sophisticated as shows aimed mainly at teenagers and adults (is that really a surprise?). You might as well argue which are better -- toy cars or real cars? They are aimed at two different markets and it becomes a little silly to try to compare them. For the 'sophisticated' market in western nations, the main produce of America are shows involving actors, not animation. The equivalent shows from eastern nations rarely gets shown in western nations (I can't recall any off the top of my head, though western shows with an eastern flavour are well known -- Kung Fu is still one of my all time favourite shows, though I'd probably cringe if I saw it now )

Based on what I've researched, Australia doesn't generally try to recoup costs. We're signatures of the Hamburg Convention and we take that responsibility seriously. I found links to other rescues and they all seem to say the same thing -- we expect other nations to rescue our citizens, and we do the same for theirs.

Leaving aside the ending, the story raises some interesting questions about end-of-life decisions. Was Tom right to do what he did? There is no doubt he loved Pete, and he framed his good-bye note in that context, but was he right? In this story, it all turned out right in the end, but in real life, how many people have to agonise over that decision? I'm hoping I'll never be in that position, because I honestly don't know what I'd do. Stories like this help make the process more human, and for that I have to thank Mark. I remember going on a course on presentations, and being told that Arial was best for powerpoint presentations. However, I agree with Tipdin -- sans-serif fonts like Arial for reading on the screen, and serif fonts like Times New Roman for printouts.

Well... on the issue of cliffs, I can agree that there are no cliffs in the story, but it is an awfully long way to fall from where they were.... I agree, though, that it's a classic 'hard' science fiction story. All essential science is explained, and is a logical extension of modern technology (some of the technology is here today). It's also an entertaining read

I should add that this anthology has twenty five entries, making it the equal biggest anthology we've had at GA so far.

I just heard a news report on the radio that said she'd been found. According to that report, the nearest boat is about a day away. That first link above is being updated by the newspaper website as new information is received. It reports that a 50m French fishing vessel (presumably the IDE DE LA REUNION in the top graphic) will be there tomorrow to pick her up.

According to one of the newspaper websites here in Australia (they're all covering the story), the chartered Qantas plane should be there in about twenty minutes from the time of this post. Hopefully, we'll have some more news sometime in the next hour.

Thanks for the link to the article with the map, CJ! I noticed that the original article I linked has been updated with a map, too. As the article from Melbourne's Herald-Sun newspaper site said, Australian authorities are chartering a jet to go look for her. Unlike Trevor's trip, Abby is attempting an official non-stop solo circumnavigation. That has certain rules associated with it, which is why she went around the southern tip of Africa, rather than through the Suez. As I understand it, to make an official circumnavigation, you can't use either the Panama or Suez canals, you have to have travelled in both the northern and southern hemispheres, and you have to have travelled a certain minimum distance. The article I linked mentions an 'unofficial' record by the Australian Jessica Watson. It's unofficial because she failed to meet the minimum distance requirement (from memory, she was a few hundred nautical miles short).

The company policy where I work is that they recognise that people will use the Internet for personal purposes. The policy requires that this not interfere with the work they are supposed to be doing for the company, does not place an excessive strain on the company resources (ie. no downloading GB's of stuff like movies), and no pornography, etc. The company also has an anti-discrimination policy that explicitly lists sexual-orientation as a protected attribute. I don't generally read stories while I'm at work, but I do try to check GA and a few other sites if I can, in case there is something going on that I need to do.

Not so much 'intimidated' as being unable to maintain the vision. A few times I've lost that vision of what the story is supposed to be, or I've been unable to put that vision into words, and the story has died as a consequence. I'm still struggling with one of those stories, and I hope to get it completed, but it's a challenge

There appears to be an Athens in Ontario. Maybe Billy is going to Canada? Sadly, there doesn't appear to be an Athens in Australia, so he's not coming here for his further education... EDIT TO ADD: Oh, my! I've just checked a travel agency website and found there are places called Athens in the following USA states: VA, CA, TX, KY, KS, OH, MI, TN, IN, NY, AL, LA, ME, WV, IL, PA, WI, MO, AR, MS, GA, VT It's obviously a popular place name.... FURTHER EDIT TO ADD: It seems that there used to be an Athens in Nebraska. Athens is also a place in South Africa and Zimbabwe....

An option that they've recently added to International Cricket is to allow the captains a certain number of 'challenges' that then go to a video umpire. That should work for baseball, too, with a minimal impact on the game. eg. Give each team three challenges, say. If they challenge a call, there's a delay while it's checked. That means a maximum of six such challenges per game. It would also help improve umpiring overall -- if an umpire is challenged by a team three times, and all three challenges are upheld, you can be pretty sure that umpire won't be umpiring again any time soon.... This doesn't eliminate that human aspect of the game that Tim mentioned. It merely brings it under control, and introduces an additional level of strategy -- should they challenge a call in the third innings, or should they try to hold onto their challenges for any likely candidates in a later innings? They'll need to make a judgement call on how likely they think they'll need those challenges closer to the end of the game.
