It's been a lot harder writing about Pern outside the Weyrs and without dragons.

It will end up at the Weyr, after a few trials and tribulations along the way. I totally agree. I've never been able to figure it out either. To a certain extent, people's attitudes are coloured by upbringing; if they are brainwashed at an early age to be homophobic, racist etc, then it's more likely to stick. As for Pern, I’ve never been entirely sure why the attitudes regressed so far, as when the colonists arrived they were a fairly socially advanced bunch of people. I think part of the reason why life in Holds is so intolerant is that as soon as the dragons were engineered, the most empathic people went to the Weyrs.

Poor Merida. Things had to get pretty bad before she decided to come back to Pinnacle Hold, but she had the children to think of, and Pern is not a forgiving place.

Could be a red herring, but I'm not telling 😄 I remember Silver Surfer too, but the name is also used in the UK for older people who surf the Internet. Hence Cynthia referring to herself as one.

You've got me thinking now. My cousin (on my mother's side) was also gay and one of my uncles never married. It's more difficult to tell who might have been gay with older generations as many gay men married to be socially acceptable or were just known as 'confirmed bachelors' like my uncle.

A suitably intriguing chapter. The building tension before La Tombola was well done, plus the arguments for and against. I'm wondering if those who are chosen are sent to meet the Gnos (whoever or whatever they are) as a sort of tribute or sacrifice. As to what happens to them, I’m keen to find out.

Yes he would have been too young. Hiding away the young folk was typical of Holder behaviour at the end of the Eighth Interval, due to a lot of ignorance about what goes on in the Weyr.

Absolutely. This is also because the marriage will bring closer ties between Pinnacle and the wealthier, larger, valley farm holds. Vikkel is regarding Kemi as a bargaining chip rather than as a person with feelings. I’m guessing Feldin's family could be the worst people on Pern and it wouldn't put him off the idea. In a later chapter, Kemi puts her feelings into words, ‘What could be more unnatural than marrying a daughter off to strangers.’

Pern is mercifully religion-free, but there was always pressure on people to have a family even when the first colonists arrived. The fact that women were eventually prevented from trying to Impress any but gold dragons is a good indicator. There are many mentions in the books of the Weyrs being more tolerant places, although, like anywhere, there will be exceptions. I agree with what you said about Holds being influenced by their leaders. A good example in canon is the way Menolly was treated by her parents because they didn’t think it appropriate for a woman to become a Harper. From memory, I think there were mentions in the books of some Crafthalls having more tolerant attitudes.

Pinnacle Hold is a particularly brutal place, although most of the Holds are described as intolerant. Could this be because all the people with sufficient empathy to Impress dragons have ended up at the Weyr?

High as it was, Pinnacle Hold became even more isolated during the winter months. Snow came early to the foothills of the Benden range, so while the weather held during ninth month, mature cheese was taken to market at Valley Narrows, together with excess stock. The article makes a good point. A lot of readers find a new author to follow by borrowing their books from the library. If the author becomes a favourite, they will often go on to buy their books. I subscribe to Kindle Unlimited and after borrowing several books by an author, often go on to buy others which aren't on loan. They could just as well say lending libraries are stealing from writers.

Jevikel and Kadin's story also leads on quite nicely to the next episode, set at Benden Weyr. -
The original plan was for female dragons to Impress female riders, however as Pern suffered a lot of plagues and riding a dragon between is known to cause problems with pregnancies, fewer girls became available. The green dragons were thus forced to either choose boys, or die. By the time of the Ninth Pass, it has long been forgotten that women ever rode green dragons.

I had a lot of requests to tell their story and it's the first one of mine that takes place (mostly) outside of the Weyr environment.

So much quicker than having the dragons all talk to each other and also got round the problem of some of the hidebound Wingleaders not liking instruction from a Fort Weyr brown rider.
