    The Long Ride

It might have done, but jumping between times takes a big toll on people. Excessive tiredness and confusion seem to be common symptoms, although some are less affected than others. Plus, as Zalna said, her body would still know she'd lived through all of those hours.
  2. Celia certainly has some issues. She's not a likeable character, but she also evokes a certain amount of sympathy.
  3. The other driver seemed as if he was out to get David -possibly the whole family. I’m intrigued.

    The Long Ride

I was tempted to end this chapter on a cliffhanger as they made that final jump, 😉
  5. That evening, they made ready for the journey. Although going between didn’t take very long, Zalna knew all too well how repeated jumps through its freezing nothingness chilled to the bone. They would have to stop every now and then to warm up and to be certain they had the next set of coordinates fixed in their mind. Probably the self-same reason those others had done so, particularly with all of the children and old folk they carried. ‘How did W’sir take it?’ she asked. ‘Fine, once I
  6. £17 here in the UK. might even be persuaded to try a pair. I usually buy my underwear in Marks and Spencer. Boring, maybe, but it fits well and doesn't shrink in the wash. All the talk about going commando reminded me of when I was young and had a part time job in a plant hire shop. On a hot summer day a builder came in wearing a very short pair of cut-off jeans. Strangely I can't remember what he came in to hire, but I do remember his balls occasionally slipping beneath the frayed hem of those shorts. My manager wondered why I was taking so long with a customer!

    Chapter 1

A humorous little story about friendship with some memorable lines.

    Facts of Life

Eric's backstory brought back so many memories. My parents (who were both relatively old when I was born) came from an era when you didn't talk about sex. Sex Ed at school was embarrassing. I lived in a suburb of London, so I can only imagine how far behind it was in other parts of the country.

    Going Ahead

The outcome will be revealed in the next chapter! Whether there is a Pass or not, the Red Star still keeps to it orbit between Pern and the Oort cloud. After 200 Turns it would have returned to the skies of Pern, but as it was a long Interval, not come close enough to drop Thread. Then it would be off on its orbit again. Lessa and the five Weyrs were able to follow it forward, so no reason others couldn't follow using the same calculations.

    Going Ahead

Good point with regard to the long Interval, although I don't think this will have a huge affect on the orbit of the Red Star, only that it doesn't come quite close enough to Pern to drop Thread. It's not until later in the Ninth Pass, with AIVAS help that it's totally diverted.

It's a big risk, but they have to know.

    Return Match

Tasteless railway station tea. Yuck! No wonder Eric was appalled at the cost. He's really beginning to find conversation easier now and to be considering a mobile phone shows how his attitudes are slowly changing.

    Chapter 11

Good thinking to show their mother the ice cream video to see her reaction and be (partially) honest. And also to try and build up the cooking channel so she doesn't suspect about the money coming in. Hopefully, she won't have to worry about the electricity bill for much longer.

    Creline's Advice

It's a risky decision. But they are still working on the premise that Thread will fall again in 175 Turns time and don't want to abandon the Ista and High Reaches project just in case the other five Weyrs don't turn up when they are needed.

    Dragons in the Sky

Yes, it's the second Long Interval on Pern. It's in ATWOP that we learn the reason for those Long Intervals.

    Loranth's Hatching

Thank you. As a writer yourself, you must know what it means to have people read and respond to your stories.

    Nasty thought.

    The Empty Weyr

Glad you decided to give it a go.

    Creline's Advice

They're trying to reduce the risk as much as they can, but yes, it's worrying. Creline has had a lifetime of experience to draw on, so he wasn't giving anything away.

    Creline's Advice

I'm definitely going to cover the Turns between 'Dragonflight' ending and 'Dragonquest' beginning to show how the situation gets so bad. Not sure if I'd want to try and write a long story which covers the same time period Anne wrote about in her books, but maybe a few short stories following D'gar, H'rek and some of the other riders further into the Ninth Pass. I really enjoy the comments, too. Sometimes, people suggest something I'd not thought about and it gives me new ideas. For example @drsawzall wanting F'drun to fall into a volcano!
  21. Zalna had been to Half Circle Sea Hold many times over the Turns. It was traditional for the Lower Caverns workers to go on foraging expeditions there, to gather reeds and withies, or berries depending on the season. Zalna and T’san always made sure to drop in at the Sea Hold itself to pay their respects to Udean, the Holder and his wife, Geava . The cavern, where boats could safely moor out of the weather, or in times of Threadfall, was large enough for dragons to fly in and land, too. It
  22. Glad you are on the mend. I recently had a close escape as two of the people who were at the Christmas family dinner tested positive a few days later. Omicron is so infectious I'm feeling as if it's just a matter of time.
  23. I read this book over the Christmas break and thoroughly enjoyed it. Totally agree with your review. I am from the UK, but can assure you the Ashes are taken very seriously by cricket fans over here too.

    Dragons in the Sky

Obviously something happened at Benden during the Interval so that they became used to only having one queen dragon at a time. Zalna and T'san are doing their best (with the information they have) to try and have at least a few working Weyrs protecting the northern continent of Pern, even if they aren't at full strength. I wouldn't have thought Crafthall positions are hereditary either, but sometimes certain talents run in a family and if a child is brought up surrounded by music and encouraged (as Robinton was) then any natural talent will have a chance to flourish.

    Chapter 10

Definitely Sweet and Spicy. I still have my reservations about what they are about to embark on.
