  1. Wow, what a force James is turning out to be! The family is going to want to get their hands on him now, for sure. I’m glad he saved Tasha from further torture. What a horrible thing to do to someone. It seems like Hunter wants to take Casper under his wing. But he’s so forceful and much too loyal to the family. I hope he figures out how to be a decent human being and doesn’t let Casper fall prey to the family.

    Chapter 1

You’ve started another intrigue! Can’t wait to see where this one leads. I love the phrase “monk state,” a concise and descriptive way of communicating a feeling that’s hard to put words on. Professor Hearst seems like a wonderful person. And I’m curious about why Dalton is suffering from insomnia. While he doesn’t seem to know himself, the signs you leave for us point to a mental health problem or trauma or both. Looking forward to continuing the tale!

    Chapter 1

I truly enjoyed reading this beautifully written chapter! You paint a lovely backdrop and the characters feel vivid and real. I ache for Toto’s tough situation and I’m looking forward to reading more. Now I am adding Summer of the Firefly to my reading list.
  4. Disintegrating, I stood in the eye And pretended over and over The calm wasn’t an illusion But I was only fooling myself This stanza resonates. It’s incredibly sad, how easy it is to deceive yourself and allow yourself to be deceived, when you love someone who hurts you. ❤️

This chapter was blissful and beautiful. Rick broke my heart with how little confidence he has, but Gus seems very good at navigating around all the digs Rick makes on himself. Hopefully Rick will continue to understand that he‘s more than good enough. I enjoyed the dream sequence at the beginning. My interpretation is that Rick letting Gus in has opened him up to some incredible feelings and some ominous ones as well. Secrets don’t last long in a small town where everyone knows your business. I look forward to your updates every week. Thanks for another fantastic chapter.
  6. If Tasha and Casper get indoctrinated by the Family and prostituted, I will reach through the internet and throw something at you. You have been warned! 😛 Casper should not be mixing himself up in this. Tasha is gonna be pissed at him. Hopefully they can work together to save themselves or James can figure out a way to help them both.

    Chapter 10

Aww, I was hoping Cole would raise Dylan. A nice ending to a wild ride of a story. I hope Cole finds love & support in raising the baby. Nice work, this story wound up some great tension and had me on the edge of my seat. I would like to read Dylan’s story once he grows up and he’s ready for that letter.
  8. Nooo Tasha! She’s talented at getting herself stuck between a rock and a hard place. I’m so nervous to see how things go for her. Also, I doubt James will be able to keep his powers hidden from dad much longer. One trip to the doctor where he has to be weighed in, and something’s gonna click.

    Chapter 9

Woah 😨 Holy sheeeeyat that was intense. My heart is still racing!! Cole has a really good head on his shoulders, making smart decisions under pressure. Too bad Michael got “away,” I would have loved to see him rot in jail. And poor little Dylan, orphaned. Great chapter!!!

    Chapter 4

It’s so great to have you on board! I have some short stories on a fantasy website. A few other stories sprinkled around here and there. I love writing but have always found it difficult to deal with the exposure involved with sharing it. Luckily I’ve gotten over that for the most part! Something to be said for the passage of time and the anonymity of the internet. Can’t wait to write more about this trio of characters. I don’t want to go to work, I want to write! I don’t think throwing a fit will impress anyone though Now get some sleep

    Chapter 4

Thank you so much! Words every writer wants to hear. I remember reading Hamlet in college and being so shocked by it 😆 Nothing phases me these days.

    Chapter 4

Yeah, I hear you. Lots of difficult stuff this chapter. Thanks for reading

    Chapter 4

I feel sad for Ethan too. What a life. He’s got a lot of growing to do, and he needs people he can open up to. Luckily Michael and Jonathan got mixed up into his life. Things will definitely get stirred up with these two around. Thank you

    Chapter 4

Love hearing your thoughts on Jonathan. And Ethan is like a magnet for hardship, poor guy. Thanks so much for your comments.
  15. My axe, hammer, and nails took over the daylight hours. Measurements, balance, ropes and roof shingles, sawdust, the smell of fresh cut wood and frozen sap, my numb fingers, the toolbox in my rusted truck bed -- each dominated my waking thoughts and pulled me into presence. I wished I could have stayed in that zone longer, maybe even forever. But when the sun fell back behind the trees, my body became weary. I put my tools away as poetry welled inside me, a dark insatiable pool that consume
  16. If I lived alone at 15, I have a feeling my place would have looked (and smelled) similar to Tasha’s. I’m making a big assumption about her living alone though. I think it’s hilarious that she thought pounding together layers of aluminum foil would come anywhere near Kevlar. It’s great to get a glimpse into her life but I’m still insanely curious about her back story.

    Chapter 8

Oh my god you made it sound like Emma died!! Cole is going to be traumatized for life after all this assuming he survives that gun😨 lol I love that it’s his first time seeing a V up close and there’s a baby coming out of it

    Chapter 3

Thank you so much for the motivating comment! I’m really glad you are enjoying it. I’m settling into a rhythm of one chapter a week and hope to continue posting on Sundays.

    Chapter 7

Great timing, Emma. Now she’ll be occupied for a while, leaving Cole to work through this revelation alone. I hope someone warns the older woman Michael’s making out with!!
  20. Trying to keep up here! So Tasha met with a force she couldn’t easily defeat, seems like it could be for the first time. I’m not surprised she wasn’t prepared for it, considering how easily she beat down foes so far in her life. I hope James doesn’t have too much trouble carrying her. Poor kid. This criminal organization is working up to be a good antagonist in the story. I have a feeling Father is using some kind of mind control on the kids. Otherwise I have a hard time imagining they would be so complacent. Our heroes certainly have a challenge ahead of them. Looking forward to the next installment!

    Virtuoso

I loved your descriptions of Gus’s music so much. Juxtaposed with the description of horrific violence shortly after, you achieved a heart-wrenching quality to the chapter that felt poetic and poignant. Excuse me while I wipe away a tear or two. Poor Gus, he’s been through so much and he’s been so strong. What a life. He deserves peace and someone who loves him. He must be starved for it. I’m glad he has Rick to take him home. It was sweet, how Gus trusted Rick with something he’d only told his therapist. I hope that encourages Rick to trust Gus with his own tragedy, because he certainly needs healing as well.

    Chapter 6

I agree with @pvtguyon this one - of course he wouldn’t believe her. Anything ringing true would get covered up quickly by denial since they’re so close to the wedding. She should have provided a little proof if she wanted him to listen to her.

    Chapter 5

Ugh, Michael is terrifying. I’m beginning to suspect he’s a sociopath. I hope Emma has the guts to talk to Cole after this encounter.

    Chapter 1

Thanks for reading and commenting! Hope you enjoy how events unfold over the next few chapters.
  25. I just jumped on this bandwagon and I’m enjoying your story so much! I noticed you have tons of chapters posted on your website but I’ll refrain and read here so I can join in the fun of commenting as you post new content. The variety of characters and perspectives keeps the story fresh. Main character aside, Tasha is a badass and I love how you describe her appearance. I’m intrigued by her and I’m looking forward to learning more of her history. This is easy to read, like reading butter. I’m pretty sure that analogy is terrible but I’m going with it anyway. It’s very enjoyable and I can’t wait to continue!
