I admit that I didn't understand the sequence from chapter 16 to 17. Is Giles the same as Gautier? And Atr did win from him in the second round? And s third round followed, with Richard. Why is GG down in the mud in the beginning of chapter 17? And why is young Lothar bleeding?

Of course. If there were no "James" in the story, the 'problem' between H and L would be solved a lot sooner....

He let himself believe all of it meant something... Of course it does mean something. Whether it leads to something is unclear, yet. But if H feels this uncertain, insecure, he should either call L out, or stop flirting with L. For yes, that is, in a sense, what H does - and then he blames L for responding.

A future...closer every day...? Only if Owen succeeds in severing all the ties that have keot him where he has been for 18 years, till this very moment. And after the taco's he returns to those ties -

Well, exiting, again. But: boys, teenagers? In the Middle Ages you were adolescent at 14. Allowed to legally marry. As to age: Lothar is sometimes 15, sometimes 16... Maybe it depends on whether he takes the front or the back part....

Maybe we should conclude that needing someone to say the "love word" really is complicating things too much. For what does it mean - beyond the "care" Brian says he always felt for T. And the question remains: hasn't T denied himself being loved, or cared for BY someone, or, indeed, loving, caring FOR someone, by waiting for twenty years to hear someone say so who, precisely after 20 years - he could not have loved anymore if, that is, he really had grown up himself...?

This really is a take of two persons, situations mirroring each other. Margot is not only selfish. She is, also, honest in her way: she wants to protect both herself and Owen. At what cost, she doesn't really know. For as much as Owen is selfish in not wanting/daring to give up what he does have - a measure of safety - and thus avoiding being who he thinks he wants to be, so is she. The only thing is that, as far as we know, Jules isn't pressing her as strongly as Ryder is pressing Ower.- 29 comments

Of course, Emma is dead right. Indeed, H "proves" she is, by even saying "maybe" to Sam. But though we now know more about H's background, I still feel his ways of hurting people who try to approach him isn't justified....

Three men in a boat. But the story cleverly hides if it is the same boat. Even so: a stifling atmosphere. Recognisable, though. And, therefore, cleverly sketched. Sexually ambiguous or not, James is a definite flirt. As to Lewis, well, we do not know what he was like before he married, why he married and if his present behaviour is a mechanism to cope with complex situations. The two of them are convincingly characterised. Yet, the epicentre of this slowburn... I'm still not convinced. Of course he accepted the party invitation. It drives the story forward. But that box under the cupboard...

Maybe this is too complicated for me. Why can the King of England argue that his daughter, a princess, marries the bastard of the Vexin, but that the daughter of the king of France cannot do so? Otherwise a fascinating chapter again.

Though I do not think the peasants are admonished to combat "feudalism" - it is a much debated and later construction - this is, on many levels, an exciting chapter, showing developments that, if possible, are going to complicate the story even more delightfully.

The only thing I grant Ryder is his concern about O's studies. But that is precisely what O already has worked out for himself!

Much of the above may, or may not happen/occur. I Share in some of the prognostications in some of the wishful thinking But yet: I still cannot see what Owen finds in R beyond a dream of freedom. In their conversations, R doesn't ever seem to have any interesting, meaningful moment to share. Nothing like O's experiences with, and emotional growth gained from the kids.

There's a sadness creeping, seeping through H's existence. It is beautifully worded. But yet... The bullying, the failed (almost-) relations, and now, at the office, a strange determination to allow nothing to happen: do we accept/believe that someone would accept his life to be dominated by unwashed pans and unopened boxes?

I am not a psychologist.nnircdi I know the end of this story. But I beg to disagree with all the above comments on Brian. He has, I think, always known he was dying. And couldn't let T come as near as saying I love you would have implied. Now, probably, with death perhaps really near, he needs T again but can't yet "commit" to T. Who would saddle a healthy young man to a dying one?

An impressive battle of minds, of wills. The very stuff of epics. If only all of us had a Wylan to combat our demons.... But, by the way, if M senses the links between C and A dangerously growing stronger, she cannot in the next momen dismissed A as irrelevant.
