And yet another question: not only may Marco find this endless return to unforgotten lives unbeatable, how would he, also, forever adapt to always new contexts, cultural, societal, et cetera. Does he, while not growing physically older, yet grow to survive change? Would someone thus cindemned not decide to end the eternal return, and commit suicide?

But that brings the question: what happened each time Marco found "Christopher". Did they live together till he died, condemning Marco to another (life-) time of searching, finding and temporary happiness?

Somehow, this is (also?) a metaphor. For if we have loved another person, who dies, we continue to want him, her, to return, to ti still be with us, till we die together. Which, of course, is impossible, unless we choose to do so...As people, sometimes, do.

Interesting. In 1926, a well-known Dutch poet wrote a short poem, titled " The Gardiner and The Death". He based it on a poem by the medieval Sufi-mystic Rumi, who took it from even older near-eastern tales. The message? One cannot escape one's pre-ordained time and place of Death...

Though somehow I agree with the French engineer's final analysis of the effect of his over-heavy pack I can see that ideally it would not do for a long trek - for a new life-journey as the one O has to face. But we all continue unpacking, and packing again, and then realise we, perhaps, over-packed, and over-burdened our journey... Whether, as some readers seem to hope, Julian will be O's life-guide...? Why should he be that? To me he seems a teacher, a mentor, who helps O find a new path.

While, obviously, C does not - yet...- remember the druid's curse, the question is whether Marco does. It seems so, if only because he, apparently, has tried to save C in other lives, too. Since this is a story about love, it - probably...- is meant to have a happy end. The question therefore is how the author will succeed to break the cycle in a for us convincing way....

Well, after the two Gluck opera's, and Theodorakis, there may be place for a new musical rendering, in our times - if only given the political relevance of, at least, the first part of the story: a leader ruthlessly offering his daughter - sons, people - for war gains. A challenge...? -
