This is an excellent description of the terrible squeeze a rout party actually was. It conveys the atmosphere better than the images shown by the always a bit polished Regency TV-drama's

Perhaps I misunderstand you. Are you really saying the elder Fitzgibbon is allowing his son to indulge in homosexual acts as long as it happens in moderation? I find that hard to believe. Even "moderate homosexuality", if publicly know, would harm the F family. And rereading your text, you definitely write that Gerard pronounced Stanley disagreable.

Interesting. But I fail to comprehend why Mr Fitzg, Sr, at least according to the disagreable Stanley (not a gentry name, by the way) would have left Oliver alone in the country, knowing that he would socialise with Tim. As to manners: never would someone remark on someone else's close relatives as did Gerard about St. The more so since he is a lawyer, and knows what words can elicit.

One thing that strikes me - though, strangely, it doesn't seem to make Timothy think at all: Oliver surely has quite a bit of sexual experience - also, apparently, of being buggered himself. -

Of course, this was to be expected. The maximum of melodrama. By the way: Valerata,or Velarata. And how come that in this tale people always turn up in houses, or restaurants, where they have 't been invited, or cannot even normally get into? -
This is a very funny chapter. And more than that: it moves the story on. But no, a medieval German boy would not have known Beowulf. And, if I remember correctly, the English didn't rediscover the tale till - oh, I don't know. The eighteenth century??? But correct me if I am wrong. And again: it doesn't really matter....

A fork to eat with? I doubt it, nrither in medieval Europe nor, even more so, the Middle East. But a bath: yes. Not in Europe but definitely in the Middle East. But a German boy would of course want to be paid for it...Even European nobles stank till the 19th century.
