Two different Districts. Alamo Park, Japantown, and the Fillmore are parts of the Western Addition. It’s east of Golden Gate Park, between Van Ness Ave on the east, Masonic on the west, California St on the north and Oak/Fell St on the south. It was given that name because it was a large tract west of the previous western boundary of the city, Larkin St, in the 1850s.
The Sunset District is west of Twin Peaks and south of Golden Gate Park.
Those sorts of houses are at risk of major damage in severe earthquakes because the garage is a large open space without a lot of bracing. Not as bad as apartments built over garages, but still in need of retrofitting. But we’ve been working on retrofits for years, other susceptible parts of the US (like St Louis along the New Madrid Fault) will suffer significantly greater damage with a much weaker shaking.
