Sometimes I like to read around - sample authors I didn't read or new authors. Just to get a fresh sample of what stories I may have missed or basically not get stuck in one form of reading. My short stories are definitely angsty - I only written one long one ... I am writing a new long story ... I hope to put out one day.

I suppose in other languages they have it easier way of referring to someone without offending them English -> Brother, Friend, Pal, Stranger, Hey You, Hey Idiot, Sir, Mame, Four Eyes, etc The usage if you listen you can predict how it means If the guy speak is a church goer and the other guy also goes to church -> Brother But then you have to listen for any inflection - it could denote endearment or disrespect Some use the direct approach to insult some one and some don't but use an inflection to mean don't come here again. Then of course you have to look at mood I say its a gamble to make a friend or a good friend or a bad friend or meet a criminal or killer or drug pusher

Its still a gift to be able say enough to give the reader an idea of thoughts and what happen. A number of writer like Graeme uses third person There are some of us that do First Person - ok we're beginners or we really enjoy being that character and writing the scene ---------- When I read HP - i just really stop paying attention who is the third person it is - since its too much of a bother to hunt it down. Let say there is a story with change of scenes - writers tend to switch pov and then I have to figure who it is. --- Why can we just stay in god mode and any body thoughts that fit the scene is used. Look in Mark Twain - you look at every seen - and its really him being the narrator \ god mode - he never in the story I forgot if all of his writing is third person.

I'll say its harry thoughts in third person or Harry's Indirect or Observed Thoughts but I would not really call it his direct thoughts in first person.

The problem with this observational is if Harry does something that upsets the narrator entirely then we get into the narrator's mind. We only got into his thoughts because he talks to himself. But if Harry never did talk - the narrator will only report what happen and put in his opinions that seem to fit with Harry behavior. Third Person is not necessarily live mode - so its like a long ago story. We get an approximation of what he's thinking or conclusions from the narrator. When we see the movie yes - its GOD mode - we can go anywhere - and see it truely happening - of course we the audience will make our own conclusions. Its a pitty we don't have "who must not be mentioned" Narrating Harry. Again the reader will love what they read as long as they can figure it all out. Those that can't will skip the story. And if we are lucky someone will comment or bicker that the story wasn't edited.

Spoiler1, mmm, its Narrative - and third person - because its never "I did" nor really speak of his thoughts or can recognize any stream of his conciousness. It seems more observational by a narrator that knows him. It could be dumbledore Like making mental note ... Harry could have spoken to himself and the narrator would mention he's making a mental note rather than say what that note like "I have to ask Hermione how its done". He had to admit to himself - is observational - he talking to himself. He does that when he's alone so much. Spoiler2, very much third person - observing him for a distance

I have to agree that about that third person subjective .... but i wonder how many people will think of it as the main character thinking of it - but its not its a story but not what the real character thinking. ie: Harry Potter - we never truly know Harry - unless it done in first person - we only know his acts of care and bravery or whatever - we only know that third person is thinking or just reporting I wonder how many will misunderstand the third person subjuntiveness for harry thoughts It only adds to endearment or something like that ... that oh harry Its weird to see a mix of styles in one but if it makes the story its fine. There still be that missing who speaking when one character speaks twice. but thats the faults of literature - its take a while to see the scene - but it tells more than a movie because movies skips all this and lacks narration but expects emotion or whatever to do what literature says But still if the style is very clear then there is more enjoyment to the reading Readers will love the author of their choice.
