  13. What can we expect this year in Tablets n Gadgets? Anyone follow CES?
  14. Here's a start of some questions from the news about CES -> Ultra HD 4K NetFlix is piloting 4K with its house of cards programming; offered as a specialty channel like HBO etc We lived with LD for 13 years until SD came out in 1941. When SD became popular it ended our peak usage of movie theater and radio as a source of entertainment and news programming. We've lived in SD resolution for 57 years before FHD came around; that's 36 years without VHS; that's 53 years without DVD Now we're entering 4K SHD resolution (2013) companies at CES are hopeful that both public n providers will catch on the future demand of this new ultra high def TV. The talk on the news is really about the WOW yet they don't talk about how much it takes the providers to ramp up services as well as how these new services\products impact us. The movie theater has been impacted since the late 70s when Cable\Satellite TV and Video Tapes\Stores then DVD, Blu Ray and OnDemand programming came out. What keep theaters alive is the first run movies where everyone can enjoy the high definition resolution. They went IMAX in 1994, digital in 1998; 3D in 2005, 2K in 2006; 4K in 2007; now 8K in 2013 just to keep up being ahead of the curb for theatrical viewing (for the next 6 to 8 years) Lets say by 2016 4K SHD starts to become popular but doesn't that come at a big price? * Cable\Satellite TV offering HD at 10 dollars/month extra in addition to your package. * Will the extra 25\40 dollars/month be worth the expense to view 4K or 8K? * Can the internet take the increase entertainment traffic at 4K or 8K streaming? * Won't the internet companies have to upgrade their infrastructure and charge more for service? * Will major internet providers stop offering the slower service? * Will SD offering begin to shut down and charge extra to force the move? * Will DVD become extinct as blu ray and a new format starts to takes over the market? * Will 128GB (or more) Flash Drive replace DVD n BluRay? * What do you think will replace BluRay? * Can antenna TV support 4K\8K resolution? (Let me guess, one channel TV) * Will this begin the end of broadcast TV so that the airspace is devoted to smartphones? * Will 4K\8K become the dividing line between the rich n the poor ppl who can afford the services? (lol, with a small middle class that would go either way) Is it a given that 4K\8K will not be on smartphones or tablets? or will better GPU come out to handle the load? * Will 16K Cinema come out in 2018? * Will first run movie be offered on-demand be offered by 2018? * Will 2018 signal the end of prepackaged entertainment? Did I miss anything? ----------------------------------------- First Started --------------- 16\35mm=1880 MovieTheater=1896 Radio=1920 LD (LowDef)=1928 78rpm=1928 33.3333rpm=1931 OutDoor Movie Theater=1933 SD=1941 70mm=1967 CableTV=1976 VHS\Beta=1977 (est 30 year life) SatelliteTV=1977 VideoStore=1977 Dial Up=1980 CD=1984 DVD=1994 IMAX=1994 DSL Modem=1995 FHD=1998 Digital Cinema=1998 Mp3 Player=1997 Flat Screen TV=1998 Napster=2000 Broadband modem=2000 USB Flash Drive=2000 THX Sound=2002 3D Movies=2005 BluRay\HD=2006 2K Digital Cinema=2006 ITunes=2006 4K Digital Cinema=2007 NetFlix\Hulu OnDemand=2010 HD Cable\Satellite TV=2010 3D TV=2010 OLED=2013 4K SHD=2013 Selective Network Programming=2013 8K Cinema=2013 8K UHD=???? megapixels per frame LD=0.07 SD = 0.3 (DVD=4.3GB) FHD=2.1 (HD, BluRay=25GB) 4K SHD=8.3 (triple layer BluRay=100GB) 8K UHD=33.2 (new disc format needed for 400gb approx, maybe flash drives would replace bluray)
