  1. Locally, the 1967 Detroit riot, followed closely by mandatory racial integration in our school district. We lived in Pontiac (Michigan), and when fighting broke out there, my dad was unable to get home to us (which scared him badly) because the roads were blocked, and had my mom pack us all up and go to her sisters house in a different town. Apparently while we were gone the fighting was rather close to our house but I've never been able to corroborate my dad's story on that. It totally changed his opinions on race, and basically he no longer trusted black people. When mandatory integration came to town in 1971, there were some school buses that got bombed. If it weren't for family issues, my dad would have moved us out right then but instead we were bused across town to different schools for a couple of years. I became much more empathetic to racial differences (despite being beat up because I was white), my dad grew firmer in his racism, which stayed as a point of contention between us until he died. He moved us out of Pontiac as soon as he could and from there my life changed utterly (and mostly not to the good). Nationally the 1973 oil embargo, which led to higher gas prices and the beginning of foreign auto imports. I believe the gas crisis started the decline of the domestic auto industry. The rise of import cars and the impact on the unions put pressure higher wages/benefits for workers but created unsustainable retirement and pension programs, which have in turn led to the fall of the industry in Michigan. This has had obvious and very negative impacts on Michigan and affected my work and home life in lots of different ways.
  2. THIS IS A TERRIBLE STORY. No real plot, contrived characters, artless dialog and terrible editing. Oh, this isn't the Caprica review thread? Carry on then. H
  3. HA! JJ is also a first-cousin-two-times-removed from his own father. I think. It makes my brain hurt: Tonto is his grandmother via Bitty. Tonto is also the sister of his, uh, grand uncle (?) Jack Crampton, who is also his grandfather via Jim Crampton. ::ow::
  4. Children of JP and Isidore Crampton: Andre Charles (Ace) Clerrault (biological father: Andre Clerrault Sr.); Claire Crampton; William (Billy) Crampton (biological son of Jeff Hayes). Ace married Cassandra (Cass), Claire married Jackson (Jack) Hobart. Wasn't Billy Claire's twin?
  5. Atlanta?
  6. ZANESVILLE?? Haha that's awesome. That's Licking County country there, bucko, where the Y bridge sets where the Licking River meets the Muskingum. You've got to go left or right when you get to the middle of that bridge, no going up the middle or you'll be good and wet! Course, you can stay on one side of the river and still cross the Y bridge, that's something no one cares about. Zanesville is the seat of Licking County, I got me some good old country relations down by Licking View, little west of town a bit. ::spits:: ::shuffles off::
  7. Okay, so go make some line diagrams. It would be a handy reference. I'd sure appreciate it. But I'm a detail oriented person, and a computer guy. Give me a spreadsheet, I'll give you a chart. Give me a genealogy program, I'll give you a family tree. I agree with you. There's no point in creating a data warehouse with a SQL back end here. A spreadsheet (as Jeremy as said elsewhere) is probably more than sufficient. It's not my story and they aren't my characters, but I think it would be fun to put together a genealogy for them. So I'm gonna, as time permits. Call it my OCD version of fanfiction or something. It's already been interesting trying to get my genealogy software to understand an illegitimate, adopted child with gay parents and a gay partner. And adopted kids.
  8. Well, if Wikipedia is so problematic, why did you bring it up in the first place? Sheesh. And there are private wikis, in which you'd need a username to edit anything. If vandalism is a concern then perhaps a wikipedia article just links to a separate page, i.e. perhaps back here to GA.
  9. I just stuck a stupid little family tree test in there, I'm skeptical. Wikipedia is pretty challenging to learn, I've never used it to create pages before but I have edited existing pages. If you want a Wikipedia entry, there's gonna be some studyin' to do. On the other hand, Google sites have some of this stuff built in, all that's needed are some gmail addresses...
  10. Okay well I just "sandboxed" a very quick and very empty family tree (I mean, not even Robbie made it onto this tree) together to see how relationships look on the screen. I was working with very little data because I forgot about Jeremy's timeline This is nothing but a framework, i.e. it's all links with no "tree" relationship chart, but if you look at JP's card (you click on the person's name to see their card) you can see I added three spouses (why is Isidore his first spouse? I am too lazy to fix it, that's why). So, click the link to open the page. Click the Home Card link. This is JP and Isidore's card, and its set as the home card because he's the center of the relationships (at this point) Now do this: Click on William Hendrickson. On his card, note that JP is listed as illegitimate. Now click Donna's name. Click Jack Crampton's name. On Jack's card, JP is listed as adopted. The software basically "dupes" JP onto both cards because he's a member of two families, one biological and one adoptive. You can do the same thing with Brad, go back to the index, click Brad's name, and you can follow the links around to Brad being illegitimate by Janice but adopted by JP and Isidore. You can also set up the assumed "cousin" relationship between Brad and Stefan by having Brad listed as adopted by Billy Schluter. So he'is not a blood relative, but he's family. I have no idea if it would be easier to continue this, but if so, a definite need is a piece of software that can chart the "tree" and render it either in web form or a PDF. Jeremy is right about spreadsheet approach to this - you'd need one to fill out the stuff in the genealogy software anyway.
  11. ::raises hand:: A genealogy is very definitely doable, so is Wikipedia. I'm a genealogist as is Enric, but I have a different opinion than you, Enric - genealogy software isn't that difficult, it's freely available, and the data it generates can be schlepped around pretty easily. MW85, non-traditional relationships are pretty common in modern genealogies, so the software can accommodate a fair amount. I've got a fairly large, diverse family tree that's online and stuff, so I'm pretty familiar with what's possible. I'm going to do some goofing on the CAP family tree, I'll get back to you... nobody panic. In the meantime, Enric has a GREAT idea about putting it on Wikipedia. Workload could be distributed, and simply creating some stub articles, fill them out, and link to them from GA and the yahoo group. Mark, what kind of reference material do you folks use to track the backstory and data around CAP? How do you guys maintain continuity? Is it all in your head?
  12. THE BOX CONTAINS THE DIVORCE PAPERS OMG MURDER MOST FOUL oh wait wrong story/wrong author Good start, Mark! Stef narrating, jerky boy Claremont idiots, mysterious sex toys, what could possibly go wrong?
  13. I just watched all of them too - hi-larious.
  14. I'd say its at least 5 years old, its even in one of their books...
  15. In order of preference Mac multitouch touchpad mouse regular touchpad keyboard a pencil trackball
  16. Cold cereal- cornflakes, they're so customizable. Hot cereal - oatmeal, the canister kind, microwaved and made with milk, organic brown sugar (mmm molasses) and real maple syrup.
  17. One of my favorite Onion articles: Why do all these homosexuals keep sucking my... Well, you get the idea. Not safe for work. Obvously. James that's a great documentary. I forgot about that. Thanks for posting it.
  18. Sorry, title was apparently cut off: Quick. What is the fourth sentence of the first chapter of your currently-favorite story? Mine: "The guard has gone." - From Gene Wolfe's "The Shadow of the Torturer", aka Part one of The Book Of The New Sun Okay, from here now: 'His breath was short, and with every pant he exhaled, a piercing bout of pain ignited through his side.' I'm Not From Earth! - Fishwings And if you're not of a mind to do this, then feel free to paste whatever is on your clipboard here instead.
  19. This, right here could be GREAT! JP in high school? Brad's natural dad? Andre? Stef in France? Tonto!
  20. I'm FED UP. HAD IT. Totally SICK OF IT. Lets pool our resources and do THIS instead of Vegas. For a cool $8 million and change, let's all pony up and bail to the tropics. Thats right, its time to buy a damn island. Our destination is Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort, located in sunny Belize. With 1300 feet of beachfront and some 300 acres of jungle, what could possibly go wrong? One of 25 private thatched roof cabanas await you. Only Thurston Howell could do it better! Your dive captain stands ready to assist you in fish netting kilos out of the water snorkeling and scuba diving, any time of the year. Apparently an Oompa Loompa will prepare tasty victuals. Of course, if Oompa Loompa food won't cut it, that looks like a mighty tasty clam pizza, don't it? You can't have an island resort without a pool or hot tub. Also, hot dudes and ladies, which will apparently need to be imported. And of course you can't go without your own private airstrip to accomodate your every drug running island hopping needs. Who's with me??
  21. Okay, I'll say it. IT'S A PLOT BY THOSE WILCOX people.
  22. baahaa thats awesome james
  23. Mmm. Bacon. Warning: noisy, annoying website. Also, awesome. Be smart from the very beginning. But be polite about it. Avoid lipstick. .
  24. Bill Hendrickson, that dirty dawg, is JP's natural father. What we don't know is that Bill, that dirty dawg, was on a trip to France, had an affair with Isidore's mother, that dirty hoor, and had a daughter by her, ten years before JP was born. So JP has a sister in law, who is also his sister, and ten years older than he is. She is cranky. Verrry cranky. Also, kind, loving, slightly dumb about some things but has a sharp eye out for anyone screwing with her family, and extremely wealthy. She's a lot like this lady, Geraldine Fitzgerald, who played Arthur Bach's grandmother in the film Arthur: Bitterman: Mr. Bach? Arthur: Bitterman! How the hell are you? Bitterman: Sir, what are you doing here? Arthur: They said I'd never make it Bitterman, they said the city would eat me alive. But now look at me, I got my own pale and my own squeegee, I showed them ALL! Martha Bach: Arthur? Arthur: Martha! Martha Bach: Arthur, what are you doing? Arthur: Well, I was... Martha Bach: Are you going to marry Susan Johnson or not? Arthur: I already told you Martha, I can't! Martha Bach: Enough is enough, Arthur. Marry the bitch! Arthur: You marry her Martha!
