Mark did a lot of consulting with a doctor who began practicing in the early 80's, as well as a different guy who lived in Portland's gayborhood since the late 1970's and was in his mid-30's when AIDS hit. AIDS really hits hard by the mid-80's, but the mass funerals start tapering off after about 1996 because they started having effective medicines that could keep people in the HIV stage.

Yeah, especially because I missed Steve's funeral. I did attend the wake, but yeah. I'm thinking about just going "fuck it" and renting a hotel room in my college town and just going out the night before. Hopefully hang out with some of my friends from college. I feel like it's going to be pretty heavy. -

Many of you know about my friend Steve, who died of a heroin overdose when we were 27 years old in 2013. It was, to say the least, a very painful experience for me, during a very turbulent year and half of my life. I recently got an email from our mutual friend inviting me to a bench dedication they're doing for Steve at a park that was, coincidentally, built near the site where their former dorms were. I mean, I'm going. No doubt about it. I just don't know how I feel about more crying. I'm going, though. I like to think it will be a positive experience. It's just weird to have this come up after having to go to my dad's funeral a month ago. Like I'm having to revisit painful memories from first my childhood, and now my 20's.

Marie strikes me as someone who, if she's not going to live in Northern California, would instead live on the East Coast. I don't think SoCal would ever be her deal.

Matt, Wade, and Tiffany seem to have settled into a nice family life and I don't want Will to come around and wreck it with the chaos he always inevitably brings. LOL At least until Maddie and Riley are middle-school aged. LOL

I did love though that JJ realized he really fits in with New York City. Although I kind of always pictured at one point JJ will come across some East Coast snobby intellectual douchebag who dismisses JJ as some dumb blond California airhead, especially when they realize that JJ isn't interested in college. -
Pretty interesting you've decided to send Marie and Will off to college while the arts minded people (JJ and John) are likely not going. I mean, neither have talked about it so it seems likely they're both forgoing college. JJ and John both have in's to the artistic fields they're interested in so they likely don't think they need college. Although I do like that JJ is at least finishing out strong at St. Anne's.

Zane Phillips looks like he'd be a CAP character. I'm leaning towards Cody, but I could also see Roger. The mustache and hair gives him a 70's or 80's vibe. Can't you just picture this guy getting into all sorts of really fun trouble? LOL -

I've always kind of imagined that Harvard would go for Will the way it initially went for Elle in Legally Blonde. That would be pretty funny to me, and I like the idea of Mark giving Will the Legally Blonde experience like he's giving JJ the Devil Wears Prada experience.

We're seeing the final days of the Hedonistic 70's, i.e. the Last Days of Disco, before the panic over AIDS and the Reagan election ushered in a conservative era.

Mark's written these characters as being very sexual and willing to go outside their comfort zones so it makes sense that nobody is perfectly gay or perfectly straight. (Except Ace and John Walsh of Fraternity Memoirs eventually identified himself as gay, but he did still find women attractive. I think he leaned towards "gay" because he didn't get the emotionally attachment to women like he did with his bros after their brosex. Also, surrogracy/IVF is in its infancy now so if Mark wants any of his legacy characters to reproduce a new generation, they gotta be at least able to get it up for a woman. We saw this pattern with JP/Isidore/Billy, and then later

I think this is supposed to be a reflection of what a stellar public education system northern California had during the 70's. Mark is from that area and I'm assuming that at the time this story takes place, it was pretty common for ultra-rich kids to attend public schools, especially in uber wealthy areas that were fresh, shiny new enclaves of wealth.

Because he knew on some level that Greg liked being a manly man next to a feminine dude so he molded himself towards that. I do remember it used to be pretty commonplace to see same-sex relationships in the media depicted as still having a heteronormative undertone where one partner was "masculine" and the other one was "feminine" and I think Stefan is molding himself into that. Nowadays we're starting to get away from that.
