Vignettes - 5. Tragedy

Miles dropped the Saturday crossword when he heard a scream. Turning toward the archway he began to rise.

“Miles come in here! Come in here right now!”

Entering the kitchen his gaze fell upon Ian, who was sobbing and pointing. “Tweetles is dead! I can’t believe it! Miles, I can’t cope. Take care of it ...please!”

As Miles wrapped the tiny body, using paper from the bottom its cage, Ian lamented. “He was always so adorable perched on the rim of my glass, drinking from my Cosmo every night. And he shared my coffee too! What am I going to do?” Now he was pacing, head in hands so he couldn’t accidentally watch.

“Should we buy another parakeet?”

He abruptly stopped and looked over. “No! I can’t take the heartbreak. Throw away the cage too. Maybe we should buy a dog or a cat.”

“Which do you prefer?”

“I don’t know! Cats can be cuddly but they might ignore you. Dogs never ignore you but they’re noisy and you can’t leave them home alone for very long. It’s too confusing. What do you think? Which should we buy?”

“Probably a cat. They have much more common sense about what they eat and drink.”

JMO, but I don't think Ian can take any kind of animal! He doesn't want another bird (which I thought are supposed to outlive us humans - even though my parrot keeled over one day too), because it's too painful, but he wants a DOG OR A CAT???? What, that won't be painful? lol Also, I can't see Ian walking the dog in the snow and the rain.

But yes, as AC said - very funny chapter. :) I was actually worried when I read the title!

Only one word comes to mind - Precious! But then another one or two are there as well, like ikr. When Ian talked about the cosmos and coffee, my mind went there, thinking oh no...not good a bird (probably not good for us either...).

Very funny and well done!

Thanks AC!

This one was fun to write because my mother had a parakeet that perched on her martini every night, took one sip, ruffled its tail feathers, and then flew to perch on the book she was reading! It's etched in my mind.

Haha ...you're right Lisa!

Ian needs a statue of a dog for a pet. :)

I'm not sure how long parakeets live, the green one, and the blue one we had when I was little I think lasted about ten years. Longer than the chameleons, at least. :) Ours had a big corner cage and would come out once in a while, though the loved to sit on the top of the curtains.
Ian should pick out the cat if he wants one that won't 'ignore' him...and he should be the feeder too. The bond starts at the purchase point though, so he should be the one to pick it out...the only one I bought from a shop wasn't the one who came up to the front of the cage first...she sat toward the back until I reached for her, and the rest was history. Friendly to a lot of people, but she was my cat without a doubt, riding around on my shoulders whenever she could. Elspeth was great.
More please!

Ian thanks you for the advice CG!

I'm not sure how long my mother's parakeet lived. I just know it died on Easter Sunday.

We never had cats or dogs in my house. But my best friend had an 'Old Yeller'. Tyke was Donny's dog, but I was Tyke's boy. We grew up together too.

Oh, poor Ian! A dead bird in the kitchen? Hard to lose a pet, no matter how old or expected. How would Ian cope with a cat? And what sort of cat? The big, obese orange kind the size of medium city or the lithe, elegant gray kind that smirks at your every faux pas?

A cat for Ian! Wonderful thought Parker.

Maybe we need a contest. ;)

Probably not a needy cat ...haha!

That was awesome. Poor Ian... But is he going to be traumatized the first time he sees the cat cough up a hair ball?

We had a coffee loving cockatiel too, and he would race you beak to mouth to as you took a sip of coffee. Funniest thing.

Thanks Defiance!

OMG I would love to have seen that!!

You know, I often wondered if my mother's parakeet could read. It seemed to have a fondness for Ray Bradbury. Or maybe it was my mother did. :)
