Vignettes - 4. Torment

Ian was pacing. The last hour was spent changing clothes four times and making himself look as good as possible, considering how little he had to work with. But Ian was torn.

Miles won’t think this was important. It’s only a two month anniversary for gosh sakes! I mean, is it that important a date? It is to me, but is it for Miles? He works too hard and has too much always on his mind. Why would this stupid day even be on his radar? No, I’ve got to ignore it too. I shouldn’t give him the gift. I should save it for something more significant, like 6 months or even one year. Of course for one year I should buy him something better than this. If I make a big production of today and he didn’t remember, he’ll be embarrassed. I don’t want to embarrass Miles, ever!

Oh God, the car door! He’s home! I haven’t even begun to think this through properly. I know I’m going to screw this up! This is the worst day of my entire life!!

Miles walked in and a beautiful smile broke out across his face. “Ian, you’re dressed so nicely and you look so delicious!”

He didn’t remember. I knew he wouldn’t. I feel totally stupid now ...stupid, stupid, stupid! I have to hide the present. Miles will be embarrassed. It’ll be the beginning of the end of our relationship. You should never make your partner feel like that. This is the worst day of my entire life!

Slowly, ever so slowly, Ian attempted to surreptitiously slide the small package off the table before Miles spotted it.

“What’s in the little box, Ian?”

Miles came up to Ian and paralyzed him with one of those amazing kisses. His hand was over Ian’s, slowly removing the gift. Breaking the kiss, he opened it. Lifting the small cross, a silver ear stud, he whispered, “You remembered! It’s beautiful Ian, exactly as you have been every day of these two months.” He kissed Ian again.

“And you’re all dressed! How did you know? Let me put on this cross. It’ll be perfect for dining tonight at Claudine’s. We have reservations for 7:00.”

Miles is the most wonderful partner a guy could ever have.

He makes each day the best day of my entire life!

Anxiety and relief. Another vignette beautifully done.

I loved the line "Miles came up to Ian and paralyzed him with one of those amazing kisses." That's like a well-rendered vignette all on its own.

Certainty and doubt. I believe you've really captured the early days of a relationship with these sketches.

Please keep them us for us!

Poor Ian.
Sometimes I want to hug him and tell him everything is going to be okay. Other times, I want to give him a good shake and tell him to get a grip. Luckily, the former wins out more often than the latter.
Keep them coming sd, Ian and Miles are delightful. :)

By now, when Ian starts to panic, I'm thinking it's probably going to be okay in the end. Yet, I feel wound up along with him, (that's a good thing) until Miles says something, or in this case shows up and proves that it really is so. That aside, Ian's anxiety this time, was totally justified.
These are such a pleasure to read SkinnyD...

Ian is one very lucky guy. For that matter, so is Miles. Thanks for capturing their interplay so adroitly.

Thanks for the nice comments Parker!

They seem to be good for each other, don't they?

Ian's insecurities could be off-putting, but I'm beginning to believe Miles really understands him.

Thanks for your great insight, Reader!

I agree. The more discoveries I make about these two, the more delightful their relationship becomes.

Thanks for your lovely comments, Defiance!

I have to admit, with you, Ian did have a point in his worry. Of course he was just a tad over the top, but then it's what we sort of expect from him. :)

Funny how the worst day of Ian's life turned out to be the best day of Ian's life. lol

I'm soooo glad Miles didn't forget their 2-month anniversary - that would have been terrible!

Just out of curiosity, does Ian take anti-anxiety meds? Just sayin'... :P

Yes, if Miles hadn't remembered, this would have turned out so differently.

I think Ian's meds are ...Miles! ;)

Naughty Dragon--this one slipped by me. I thought I saw it but next time I looked it was gone.
Ian will one day realize that Miles isn't like his ex...but I well remember the times I was starting a new relationship, and these stories bring back all that anxiety--I always over-analyzed and fretted that things would go wrong. In my mind, I didn't have a lot to offer, being a nerd with thick glasses and not into sports, with my interest in movies I could make friends, but not often find someone who'd date me...I even had one person show interest so he could approach my roommate--who tore him a new a-hole for that move.
I can SO empathize with Ian!
More please!

Thanks for the great comments CG!

Ian definitely feels somehow 'not up to standard' and I wonder if it isn't somehow related to his ex, Markey. Maybe we'll find out in a future episode (and maybe we won't) :)

Miles is like my Michael. He knows Ian, he knows Ian's issues and he works to make sure Ian will be okay.
His kisses both excite and soothe, as does his touch and the words he uses. Ian is high strung and Miles is water to his fire. His perfect foil.
lovely...

Thanks Tim!

Yes they seem to be made for each other. Well, Miles seems to be made for Ian. But he must be in so love too.

Miles is perfect, and he's perfect for Ian. He soothes the savage beast that dwells inside of Ian... fascinating interactions between the two... cheers... Gary...
