Vignettes - 8. Improvement
“You really are worthless Ian. Less than worthless! You only draw dumb illustrations and whine. I’ve had it with you! I can choose from so many better guys. I’ll have another boyfriend tomorrow. And where will you be? I can see it already. You’ll spend the rest of your life alone and depressed. Why don’t you become a priest or something. At least your life would have some small purpose. I mean, look at you now. Who the hell would even notice if you suddenly vanished? Nobody, that’s who ...and least of all me! Well I’m outta here.” SLAM
I reran that little farewell speech every day. Shawn begged me not to. Shawn always gives me compliments and tries to build me up. Shawn is a good friend, but I need to do this. At least I’m using Markey for something useful: improvement. He doesn’t have a hold on me anymore.
Every day I continue to concentrate on this final speech, and the litany of things which made Markey hate me. If I can understand these things, then I can avoid them with Miles.
Miles, who has my heart in his hands.
I vowed never to become vulnerable again. But it only took one look. How stupid is that! Even after resisting for ten months, I was a goner from the first day and that first look. Well, if these things bothered Markey, they’re sure to bother Miles.
Miles slowly awakened and his eyes fell upon the love of his life, already sitting up in bed and staring into space. “Ian, why the pensive look?”
Ian broke into the cherubic half smile which always overwhelmed his partner. “Oh, just thinking of ways to improve myself.”
“You know, now that I think about it, there is a little something you can do to improve yourself ...at least for me.”
Ian was instantly alert.
Finally Miles is admitting my flaws! It’s the first time he’s ever done it. This could be bad. I’d better pay close attention to what it is he sees me doing wrong.
Softly but sincerely, Ian spoke. “Anything Miles. Please, I’ll fix anything! What do you want me to do?”
“Slide over here. To improve yourself love, you always need to stay a little closer to me.”
