Vignettes - 5. Tragedy
Miles dropped the Saturday crossword when he heard a scream. Turning toward the archway he began to rise.
“Miles come in here! Come in here right now!”
Entering the kitchen his gaze fell upon Ian, who was sobbing and pointing. “Tweetles is dead! I can’t believe it! Miles, I can’t cope. Take care of it ...please!”
As Miles wrapped the tiny body, using paper from the bottom its cage, Ian lamented. “He was always so adorable perched on the rim of my glass, drinking from my Cosmo every night. And he shared my coffee too! What am I going to do?” Now he was pacing, head in hands so he couldn’t accidentally watch.
“Should we buy another parakeet?”
He abruptly stopped and looked over. “No! I can’t take the heartbreak. Throw away the cage too. Maybe we should buy a dog or a cat.”
“Which do you prefer?”
“I don’t know! Cats can be cuddly but they might ignore you. Dogs never ignore you but they’re noisy and you can’t leave them home alone for very long. It’s too confusing. What do you think? Which should we buy?”
“Probably a cat. They have much more common sense about what they eat and drink.”
