Peter's Probationary Poems - 1. December - Poetry Prompt 16 - Carol

December days can be so short
that night seems never-end.
But soon the darkness will abort
and longer hours will wend.

Let there be light,
begone black night.
When life’s no fun,
reach for the sun.

December days can be so cold
that ice may reach the heart.
But soon bright rays will manifold
and love have a new start.

Let there be light,
begone black night.
When life’s no fun,
reach for the sun.

December days can be so glum
that some may seep inside.
But soon there will be cause to hum
and gloomy feelings hide.

Let there be light,
begone black night.
When life’s no fun,
reach for the sun.

Remember days they will be soon,
the darkness disappear.
December days – Remember days.
Welcome a bright New Year.

Without the educational and stimulating prompts by AC Benus and his encouragement by my first steps on the writing path this would never have come to life. Thanks AC !

Yay! You have gone 'author'! About time! Now, I hope more people get to read your work!

I totally share your longing for the sun. Darkness is doing me in. December is a sort of tired month. A lot of waiting for something better.

Hi. Your carol was very good. December here hasn't been too cold but the darkness seems never ending. You brought that typical winter month alive, nicely done.

Thanks Puppi for my first received review ever. Although Christmas is something to look forward to, December is mostly leaving for work in the dark in the morning and arriving home in the dark in the evening. I suppose it's even worse in Sweden.

Outstanding, Peter... I love how you put words to work... I felt the cadence of this wonderful poem, and could hear the musicality of it. I am beyond impressed, my friend. I hope this is only the beginning of you posting your work! It's long past due... cheers... Gary....

Thank you, tim, for your review. December has been mild here as well and with the Christmas lights both in the house and in the garden we try to bring some light where nature lets us down.

This was really good carol, paying tribute to the dark dreary month. You know December well. It has been unseasonably warm here but to lift the mood, longer days and sun light are definitely things to look forward to.

Well done .

Thanks, Gary, for your praise. I do associate a carol primarily with singing and Christmas, so I did my best to make it song-like. Glad that my intention seems to have come across.

Thank you, Defiance, for your review. Your observation about the temperature makes me realize that the poem is only valid in the Northern hemisphere. December must be quite a difference experience for our antipodes.

Very lovely!

Each stanza, while suffering from one 'affliction' of December, ended with the hope of redemption from it.
Sort of spiritual, in that regard.

Thanks for sharing this!

I second Puppi: About time!
You captured December mood perfectly. Where I live we have mostly rain, no snow. It feels as if the dark piles up, surrounds us until, finally, winter solstice gives us hope again. For me it's the real beginning of the new year.
I look outside and nod to your poem. Nine more days and the light will conquer the dark.
I'm looking forward to more poems from you, Peter.

Thanks for your review, skinnydragon. Like everyone else I have my dark moods occasionally. What always gets me over those is the knowledge that all the other times before things eventually got better. You, having wings, must of coarse not reach too close to the sun, or Icarus's fate awaits.

Thanks for your kind words, Adi.

In front of our house stands a big oak tree. After Christmas we see the sun set in places that slowly creep to the tree, till at summer solstice the sun sets in a spot just past the trunk. Soon the sun will start that journey again.

I noticed that in that sentence I avoided to attribute a gender to the sun. Male in French, female in German, but in English I wouldn't know. And so unintentionally I see another aspect of how difficult translating poems must be and my admiration for your skills grows.

Peter, I like that you took the challenge as a December carol. Such a song does not have to be about a holiday, and here Nature is used to mark and provide contrast for human emotions.

The light will return, and that is something people have anticipated and celebrated for a very long time. I like this carol; I can feel the cold, but I can also feel the warmth of spirit.

I have very mixed feelings by the way most people celebrate Christmas these days, that's why I chose another theme. As I always try to see the glass as half full, the outcome had to be positive.

Thanks for the review, AC. You know my expression of gratitude as stated under the carol is genuine.
