Cider Press - 3. To a Broken Pencil
To a Broken Pencil
A broken pencil seems a crime,
and not because it costs a dime,
or wastes the wood or graphite, too -
I might list more, but don't have time.
The shattered stylus makes me blue
because the thoughts both wise and true
that might have flowed from mind to pen
will stay unwritten, hid from view.
The breaker, far beyond my ken
may ponder, and remember when
a thought portentous crossed the brow,
but naught to write with, now or then.
I wonder if one might allow,
a poor benighted pencil's bow;
that humble stub, besmirched with grime
may yet produce a verse or vow.
