Cider Press - 3. To a Broken Pencil

I have a deep belief that there is very little that is worthless.

To a Broken Pencil

A broken pencil seems a crime,
and not because it costs a dime,
or wastes the wood or graphite, too -
I might list more, but don't have time.

The shattered stylus makes me blue
because the thoughts both wise and true
that might have flowed from mind to pen
will stay unwritten, hid from view.

The breaker, far beyond my ken
may ponder, and remember when
a thought portentous crossed the brow,
but naught to write with, now or then.

I wonder if one might allow,
a poor benighted pencil's bow;
that humble stub, besmirched with grime
may yet produce a verse or vow.

If you have a comment or a thought to leave, I would be delighted to know what you think.

I agree with your opening sentiment completely.  I enjoyed this. Broken pencils still have worth.  Lovely.

Well done. The simple pencil is not so simple afterall ...

Thank you Dugh. No, the little yellow stylus is not as simple a thing as one might assume.

I am glad you liked this. It speaks to my heart that everything and everyone has value and worth. We should take care to avoid breaking things, and people, too. Many thanks for reading!

Very nice, Parker ... yes, broken pencils still have worth, as do many broken things.

You have my thinking exactly. Sometimes cleaning up at the end of study halls can be a little trying to look at what young minds throw away. How important it is to grow out of that. I am glad you like this one; thank you for reading and commenting.

This hits close. Everything has value and worth. Nothing should be wasted.

I often feel broken with my inner demons and disabilities. I struggle if this is the day I won't have value to my partner. Well done Parker.

Another great poetic metaphor, Parker. Until the last speck of graphite, it/we can create something wondrous. I loved this ode to a pencil... representing the evolution of improvements to the first stick to write in sand, and to the first human to use that stick in such a way... this one, I will remember... cheers... Gary....

Yes: everything has value and worth, even broken pencils. And if I keep a drawer full of them (and I do) then how  much more might we be when we feel broken, too? Thank you for reading and responding to this.

I’m glad you liked this, even more glad that you will remember it. Each small thing has its place and value; even if broken or torn. We can make great things from such items as others forsake. Many thanks for reading this, and for your comments.

You know my thoughts on the humble pencil. Without it, I wouldn't be writing. Something so simple, yet invaluable as a tool, acting as a conduit between me and my paper. How many people today ignore something so basic? Something so inert, on the surface, at least. Yet so valuable, across the ages. Mine are looked after, loved almost. Unlike others. An excellent metaphor.  :)

It is so easy to reduce the prosaic pencil to something like a valueless commodity. Yet we seem to know better. Thank you for your wonderful comments!

Sturdy,

undemanding,

simple yellow pencil,

ready always to take thought to

paper;

steward

of ten thousand imaginings,

happily solved problems,

and secrets of

my heart.
