Lyrical Laments - 8. Chapter 8 Violation and A Father's Fear

Warning! These poems are about sexual abuse and rape. Look around you....

Chapter 8 Violation and A Father’s Fear

Violation

My physical pain is secondary

As invasive, clutching hands

Roam freely, uninvited

Groping at my innocence

No respect for boundaries

No respect for NO

Oh, those horrible hands

Fouling

As they dispose of my choice

Tearing away fabric

And all my security

Forever

In mere seconds

Exposing me,

And a new truth

I have become a victim

May you rot in hell

A Father’s Fear

We send our daughters out

Armed with hope

As prepared as we can make them

In the short time we have

We warn of monsters

They do exist

But how do we protect them

From the invisible

And the insidious

We stay back

Holding onto our own hope

Needing to trust

The world will be kind

But it often isn’t

Bosses, friends, strangers

And yes, lovers

Can turn the tables

In a heartbeat

Striking at the heart of our joy

And destroying a lifetime of nurture

All we can do

Is try to help pick up the pieces

Of a shattered life

Doing what dads do

While grappling with our own devastation

I did not post these to upset anyone, and although partly specific, they are not about my children. As well, we must remember men are often victims too. My point is to say this kind of behavior is unacceptable. All the privilege, position, or opportunity in the world does not give anyone the right to violate, coerce, or manipulate another.

These were very difficult poems to read.  I don't have personal knowledge to feel the pain.  However, as a teacher of young children for many years, I know the lasting affects abuse has on children and their families.  Their stories cannot be told by me, but a few of them were horrible beyond belief.  Keep shouting, keep writing. Don't let us become apathetic to the evil that destroys the lives and souls of others.

These are meant to make us squirm. I did not enjoy these, but poetry brings out an honesty I sometimes regret. Not in this case though. Monsters are real, and trust is a fool's game at times.

I'm glad I write these, but coming back to them is disturbing... yet necessary.
