Lyrical Laments - 8. Chapter 8 Violation and A Father's Fear

Warning! These poems are about sexual abuse and rape. Look around you....

Lyrical Laments

Chapter 8 Violation and A Father’s Fear

Violation

My physical pain is secondary

As invasive, clutching hands

Roam freely, uninvited

Groping at my innocence

No respect for boundaries

No respect for NO

Oh, those horrible hands

Fouling

As they dispose of my choice

Tearing away fabric

And all my security

Forever

In mere seconds

Exposing me,

And a new truth

I have become a victim

May you rot in hell

A Father’s Fear

We send our daughters out

Armed with hope

As prepared as we can make them

In the short time we have

We warn of monsters

They do exist

But how do we protect them

From the invisible

And the insidious

We stay back

Holding onto our own hope

Needing to trust

The world will be kind

But it often isn’t

Bosses, friends, strangers

And yes, lovers

Can turn the tables

In a heartbeat

Striking at the heart of our joy

And destroying a lifetime of nurture

All we can do

Is try to help pick up the pieces

Of a shattered life

Doing what dads do

While grappling with our own devastation

I did not post these to upset anyone, and although partly specific, they are not about my children. As well, we must remember men are often victims too. My point is to say this kind of behavior is unacceptable. All the privilege, position, or opportunity in the world does not give anyone the right to violate, coerce, or manipulate another.

I'll never have the fear of a parent, thank god, and more so for the fact that I've never experienced this as a victim.  I can't even say the world has changed since I was young to allow this to happen, because the most famous perpetrator at present has been doing it since I was a teen.  Power corrupts, as we all know, but that isn't any sort of excuse as people might think...this is a twisted thing inside the aggressor's mind that ought to be excised.  Where are the signs for this, and how can we prevent this mind-set from getting a foot-hold?

Sadder still, physical abuse isn't the only form of rape--which is a violent taking of anything against one's will--Kevin was put through a mental equivalent by the very people who should have nurtured and loved him, and no amount of caring and love from me or others could win out in the end.

Thank you my dear friend for bringing your mind to bear on this subject--I hope your words can bring some order and solace to someone out there....

The first brought memories of broken trust. No one should ever have to become a victim, of any sort.

The second i feel everytime I allow Alisha to go anywhere without me, or a family member with her. She is growing up and becoming more independant, and the fear in me grows every day.

Well written Gary, a hard subject but one that needs highlighting at times.

Yes, we need to be constantly reminded this is unacceptable... I fear it falls on mostly deaf ears... and, yeah, it isn't easy being a parent... thanks, Caz....

These are tough to read, and I'm sure they were tough to write.  It's such a difficult subject that's way too prevalent, I'm afraid.  And you are so right about men being victims too.  People tend to forget that.

Yes, they do. Men are just as vulnerable in this world... it doesn't matter if we might be physically stronger... we often face the same monsters... thanks, Val....

Anger and defiance are better than guilt and depression which often rides the victims of sexual assault as a relentless nightmare. Rape is the one unforgivable sin (apart from murder) because destroys your inner self. :,(

Those hands never go away... so true, Tim. Becoming a victim can crush you or anger you... either way, they change you... thanks, my friend....

It’s difficult for me, as a parent, to think of releasing my kids into the world knowing how dark and cruel it can sometimes be. Like Dugh, I was relieved to know these weren’t quite that close to home for you.  Both poems are hard to read, but they ring a sad truth out there.  Sometimes all you can do is to be there to help someone pick up the broken pieces as best you can

Yes, that's about all... I admire those brave souls who come forward... they often become victims again... of a different sort... thanks, Lit....

the thing i thank the universe for, is the fact i don't have to deal with the parent perspective of having a child as a victim. i'm a child and adult survivor of rape and i refuse to be silent. sorry Gary for the hijack

No worries... I am so thankful my children have avoided being victims... as far as I know....

Assault comes in many forms... I hate the bullies of this world with a passion... there are people who take pleasure in hurting... destroying... others, and that has been since the beginning of time... how is it accepted as okay by so many? Is it me, or is the world becoming more numb... callous... cold?
