Lyrical Laments - 20. Chapter 20 Wish and Invitation

Just some simple poetry about communing with our natural world.

                                                                                                                                                                    *****

Wish

The crescent moon climbs slowly

In the starred night sky

An ancient light for lovers

Whose beauty makes me sigh

I whisper my truth to you

In a moment bold

And cast my single wish

For someone’s hand to hold

I sense the ancient magic

In your timeless gleam

And though far away you be

Mere feet above, you seem

Close enough to touch

I confess to you my need

For a love to fall

Upon spoken longings freed

I ask not for the Sun

Or a star to light my heart

Only for one other

Who sees me as their part

If it’s too much to ask

I again will wait my turn

For what’s another month

For my lonely soul to yearn

Invitation

Oh, sweet and gentle breeze

A companion sorely missed

Pray visit me upon this day

And lift this stifling pall

Remind me of the lilies by the road

And the clover freshly cut

The horse dozing in the paddock

And the cedars standing tall

Show me the sway of hanging baskets

And leaves fluttering from your kiss

Let me hear those tinkling tubes

Play music outside my door

I want to feel your freshness

Dry my upturned gaze

And shiver with the sudden

Coolness of your touch

Awaken from your slumber

I’m beseeching you

Come play within your kingdom

No more hide and seek with us

More poetry. I hope it speaks to you in some way. :)

I liked Wish for the hope and longing I feel in it; and Invitation for the many, many images of summer you brought to mind. Thank you.

Thanks, Parker. :)

Ah, the moon. Our fond watcher, always there, always looking out for us. I love the moon, and the sense of hope it brings to the night. A very sweet Wish.

And what's a beautiful, sunny day without a breeze to carry back the memories of summers past? Invitation, indeed.

Very evocative, Gary. The moon, and summer. You've touched on two of my favorite subjects! :)

Two of my favorite things as well. Who hasn't made a silent wish to the moon or the stars or the heavens? I'm pleased you found sweetness in this one. And is there anything better than working up a sweat in summer, and standing in a breeze to cool down? :)  Or to wake up in the morning, and smell the lilacs on the breeze coming through your window? Thank you reading and commenting, buddy.

Wish. I do believe in the magic of the moon too. (in secret) I'm sure she listens not only to wolves.

Invitation makes me want to sleep outside watch the stars and listen to summer noises while fleeing the stifling heat in the house.

Thanks, Adi! I will never lose my fascination with the moon. We humans and mother earth... and wolves... are tuned to it... this ancient deity to whom many have prayed over the centuries. She has heard my hopes and dreams many times, and has even granted some of my wishes. :)

Right after I wrote Invitation, a strong breeze came up... so Cookie and I went out and played some soccer with a little football. :D  She did most of the running. :P  I appreciate the support, Adi.

What is it about the Moon that defies all our knowledge?  Despite having walked on her dusty surface, a mere mention conjures up ancient magic and millenia of dreams....chills enveloped me as your words wove their spell.

Lucky you, with all of outdoors to waft in on that breeze--I get occasional flowers, mown lawns and the tinge of exhaust from passing cars outside my door...or the wail of sirens or yells of students on a game day....

Chills? Wow. Thanks for keeping me company while I pay homage to her. She is magic, and her physical pull is very real. I am lucky to live where I do. So many times I considered letting the farm go, but I just couldn't, and now I can enjoy what it has to offer. :)  Thanks for your unwavering support, buddy. XOXOXOXO

Two chapters without a lament.  Both poems created wonderful images.  I so enjoy those images of nature you write.  This reminded me of some of your descriptions in Larkspur.   I'm sure all those walks you have taken in the woods around your home have inspired both the poems as well as parts of Larkspur.

Well, these were laments of a sort. Lamenting to the moon for a want, and lamenting to the wind to take away the stifling heat that stills life. We poets have license. :P

It's interesting what you say about Larkspur, Terry. Absolutely, the nature surrounding me has inspired my writing, and I got to use that in the Sidewinder series. It's funny, but when someone mentions Larkspur, I smile broadly. What a tremendous journey it was for me. Cheers!

Sidewinder and Larkspur were tremendous journeys for me as a reader.  I think others who have read those novels would readily agree.

That is comforting to hear. It was a lonely, depressing time, but at least something good came out of the pandemic for me. :)
