Lyrical Laments - 19. Chapter 19 Doggonit

It's raining, it's pouring...

Doggonit!

A day of gray

The sun at bay

Upon my breast

A dog does rest

Together we wait

For rain to abate

Our play delayed

And plans waylaid

While we stare out the window

Woe are we

Adrift on this sea

But at least we have each other

*

Poor doggy with the sad eyes. Still... she makes my heart happy. :)

Love it, Gary! :2thumbs:

The only possible criticism I could possibly have is that the last line just didn't seem to work... :unsure2:

Thanks, Marty! That was Cookie's line. :P  Seriously, I know what you mean, but the poem is singsong to me in my head, so the last line is the final part of the rhythm... :)

While we--da da

Stare out--da da

The window--da da daaaaaa

...... just a silly little poem....

Yea, I understand what you're saying. It's just that, when I read it, it didn't create a sing-song rhythm in my head - more of a quiet and contemplative feeling.

But it's interesting how two people can read exactly the same piece of poetry and get two completely different vibes from it. :)

That's one of the best things about poetry... how many different interpretations there can be.

I was going to end it with...

"Woe are we

Adrift on this sea"

But I liked 'Cookie's line' better. :P

I'll wait a bit before I tell her... temperamental writers. I didn't touch her line, I just added... I'm sure she'll understand.   :P

Oops! My bad....

I didn't scroll all the  way up to re-read the poem. I actually thought at first that you'd deleted her line... :blushing:

No, I've never changed a poem after I've written it... and this is the first time I've added to one, but I realized those two original lines...

"Woe are we

Adrift on this sea"

... did work with the addition of "But at least we have each other," and didn't change the intent. :)

You paint a picture of a rainy day idyll. I can see it in my mind’s eye. Very lovely!

Thanks, Parker. I'm glad you liked it. :)

There certainly has been enough of that weather, everywhere, this spring.

But our dog and cat companions don't much care what the weather is like, just so long as they are spending the time with us, right? :)

Right, there has been, but... Cookie looks at me with those eyes... it worked during blizzards, even when we were just out. She's older now, a whole year, and she has to learn more patience. She thinks her world is ending when we don't trek out to the woods... I swear she has an inner clock. The nice thing is, she can help me write while it pours rain. :P  Thanks for reading and commenting, buddy.

They sure do... and her needs come before mine.  Now our  'job' includes checking on the new kittens. She has to sniff each one. Thanks, Val, and I'll pass this along to our new author. :P

I never had a dog small enough to lay on my chest--my first was a large German Shepherd and the last was a Great Dane, but I've had cats do that quite often.  Most were happy to sleep by my side on the blankets, but a couple would insist on more: my lilac Siamese Kublai would lay under the blanket with his head on the pillow next to my head all night; my tuxedo Elspeth would lay on my chest with her head resting below my chin--might have a pic of that somewhere, and she'd ride around on my shoulders until I put her down otherwise she'd be there all day; Genghis and Bortai, my last two Siamese in my pics here, would sleep on opposite sides of my head on mypillow with there butts facing me and their heads laying in my cupped hands so I would be trapped all night--Bortai was content to let my hand be where I wanted, but Genghis wanted it where he preferred.

I had the Dane out in the country, and my parents would let her in the house in the utility room and she'd run all the way to the opposite end to jump on my bed if they wanted me to get up...almost a necessity with a dog almost as tall as I was!  A double bed was big enough for one body six feet tall, but not two....

Love this. Those sad eyes make you wish you had the power to stop the rain, and when they put that big knobby head on your body and relax, it’s so okay that you can’t..

I miss those days with Bella.

amazing what a little fur at our side can mean. the days take on a different hue with a partner in crime... to be woken up or consoled by pure love in any form is comforting, and helps us feel connected on those days we struggle. sorry... have trouble typing, and a little loopy from painkillers. xoxoxo

Loopy from painkillers?  Hey, it's about the only legal 'high' you can get that is at doctor's orders and won't fry brain cells or livers.
