Cider Press - 11. Masquerade

Somewhere, someplace, there is a fall dance. My feet often err, but I hope you will be forgiving.

Masquerade

Who are these figures in the dance
of Autumn's heady, sweet romance?
I know I ought to recognize
their faces as they sport and prance.

I know Attraction by his eyes,
and Mystery goes in disguise,
see how Seduction rocks and sways
to bring his partner up to size.

But there are others in my gaze
on whom my wishful thinking plays,
broad shouldered, blond, with smile serene,
and tinted orbs in blues and greys.

Love's retinue I will not fear,
for they can do no damage here,
except that one who may perchance
gain entry to my heart, austere.

Leave a note or a dance card if you are so inclined.

Yes... the one we let our guard down for has the ability to hurt us... but the risk will always be worth it. Lovely and rhythmic.  As Val said, I loved the capitalization in the second stanza... very effective. :)

You see things very clearly. That one we admit into our hearts can be our undoing, can’t it? Glad you liked the charactizations in stanza two. Thank you so much for reading this one!

It's a unique theme to illustrate. I could conjure a host of such dance partners coldly shaping the course of my life too - but so can we all I suppose. Great poetry is about discovering and unfolding commonality. Very well done :)

I can recall a partners like that, those whose masks we recognized, but whose nature could not dance wholly with our own. And yet we still watch, and hope to dance with the right partner. Thank you so much for reading!
