Will I or Won't I ... napowrimo 2018 - 3. Third Week

It's Prompt Week!! no, prompt, not prom ...

April 15, 2018
Prompt: Write in Skeltonic Verse

These are short
Written for sport
Can't be long
so not a song
Maybe chant
since they're scant
Rhyme is a must
this, please trust
but how to quit
and not lose it
Let's just glide
then we'll bide

April 16, 2018
Prompt: Write about an old friend

I feel that old familiar friend
the darkness come a-calling
I want to just hide away
where nothing really matters

You try to hold me steady
steering our course safely
I'm unsure, want to run
but you will not let me

Inside I've curled up tight
I build a wall to keep, all, out
You are with me, in my dark room
your whispered love echoes

April 17, 2018
Prompt: Write about what you feel today

Why am I so afraid?
I don’t know but I am
even though I give it to you
even though you protect me
even though I've lived through worse
I am afraid to breath some days
my fear is a darkness
it clutches at my heart
and squeezes
I make myself dress
make myself pretend
I pretend I am a real boy
because in truth
I am not
I am vapour
I am lost
I am afraid

April 18, 2018
Prompt: Write about Trees

Ode to a Tree

You stand, taken for granted
giver of shade, cleaner of air

Through wind, rain and snow
you bend, sometimes you break

Your kind have given us homes
paper, furniture, oxygen

In summer you keep us cool
in autumn you dazzle us with colour

In spring we watch for precious buds
in winter we hope you survive

Sometimes we lean against you
trusting you to hold our secrets

April 19, 2018
Prompt: Write about time

Tic Toc

To live our lives we must believe
Take for granted the sun will rise
Feel we will live to fight another day
Remembering this too, shall pass

The young are immortal and cocky
Aging brings self-reflection and honesty
As well, it often solicits fear of reality
Knowledge that finite are our days

For some finality is a gauntlet thrown
a summons to fight in the face of death
Yet others simply wish to sleep
while around them the world rages on.

Time is a relentless taskmaster
it brings no peace, or release
Rich will he be, who masters the clock
For now only death unchains us from time

April 20, 2018
Prompt: Write about Spring

Buoyant Spring is on a vacation,

leaving us in Winter's dicey care.

He thinks he's a comedian;

dropping shining ice everywhere.

Steadfast Winter waits with great cheer

Sending snow and bitter rains our way

But sister Spring will soon be home

dispelling for a time, Winter's gray.

April 21, 2018
Prompt: Try a new form

The modern pantoum is a poem of any length, composed of four-line stanzas in which the second and fourth lines of each stanza serve as the first and third lines of the next stanza. The last line of a pantoum is often the same as the first.

Special thanks to Lyssa, our dear friend, for reminding me of home, of better times and my Mum's almond blossoms.

Many are the days you simply fill my heart
Reminders of you in almond blossoms,
in the bounty of spring, you're in each leaf
Spring was always your favourite season

Reminders of you in almond blossoms,
so sweet in their shades of pink and of white
Spring was always your favourite season
because it brought your garden to life

So sweet in their shades of pink and of white
Little children pluck blossoms, making rings for their hair
Because it brought your garden to life,
having the children celebrate the simpler things

Little children pluck blossoms, making rings for their hair
Warm air is filled with perfume and laughter
having the children celebrate the simpler things
Many are the days you simply fill my heart

the 15th is wonderful, and i adore the sing songy quality.  in fact, when i read it, it was almost song-like

the 16th and 17th speak right to my heart, that's one friend none of us need ever see again,

and the 21st, i love when your mom visits us in your poetry

Interesting prompts with wonderful poems as a response. I have not heard of Skeltonic Verse or Pantoum. I enjoyed them both. The first two poems made me want to reach through the internet and give you a hug. You'll have to ask Mike to give you one on my behalf. My favorite this week was the almond blossoms. Emotionally because your Mom inspired it. Technically because of the line that repeats in the stanza below it. Thanks for sharing, Tim.

Thanks very much Jeffrey!  There are tons of poetry forms ... Depression is just part of me, but poetry helps me get through it. Our friend Lyssa who is in Germany and who has spring, sent me pics of an almond bush.. with beautiful pink and white flowers.  I'd forgotten, but my mother had one in the garden.. i'm glad you enjoyed the pantoum.  I appreciate you reading poetry, so many are afraid to try it.  You may like this one....i'm rather pleased with it.. The Pick-Up   Thanks again xo

For the John Skelton style poem, it's interesting that I posted an excerpt form his delightful Colin Clout just this week. It shows best of all how he clipped and dipped, and ripped and slipped... hehe.

Concerning April 16th, I wish that old 'friend' had failed to get a change of address notice for you. Pity; he's one old crony you do not want hanging about.... Tell him to scram.
Your Ode to a Tree is utterly beautiful. I'm reminded of the story The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Yours is a poem filled with kindness and respect, something we should all have for our mother earth.

Tic Toc is quite a remarkable poem. You've said you wanted to concentrate more on your April poems this year, and verse like this benefits in spades from it. I'd say it's a super strong poem; it could be among the best posted on GA.

The poem to your mother is personal. For me that's where it's beauty lies. Individual, and yet universal.

Great work!

Oh gosh AC,  i did read Colin Clout, but didn't pay attention to the author!  Duh! Thanks for posting the link for us!!   Perfect.

I love trees. They were kinda special when i was younger...several in downtown Toronto hold my secrets.

I really dislike 90% of the poems i wrote last year for NaPoWriMo .. i didn't want to produce the same poor work this year.  I'm very flattered about what you think of Tic Toc ... thank you.

I enjoyed the pantoum and well spring and my mother's garden were the perfect subject for that form.

Thanks for reading these, and thanks for all you do for the poets on GA. You are a huge support and reference, and an excellent teacher.

xoxo

This collection represents Dark and Light. The demons that haunt us and the love that protects and saves us from them.

Ode to a Tree and the pantoum were my faves. Written with love and respect. Emotion ran through.
